I completely agree with you. It is very rare for me to actively dislike a type of music but prog rock just provokes an extremely negative reaction in me. I find it to be the opposite of what I want out of music. Prog Rock to me is so far removed from emotion that it's impossible for me to enjoy. To me it sounds like instruments playing for a certain length of time, not actual songs if that makes any sense.i don't really like prog rock or punk rock much in practice, but i like the latter more in theory. i can't be doing with all that stately grandiose affected emotionally sterile flowery wanking bullshit thank you very much. and yes i know that's a gross generalisation, but the few exceptions basically prove the rule.
I'm usually labeled as a prog fan, but I don't like prog for prog's sake. I appreciate progressive elements tastefully balanced with good songwriting and melody (which is why I enjoy Jethro Tull and Genesis more than, say, Brand X). When it is done right, I find that it can be the culmination of an emotional experience. Simplicity is fine, but when true talent and complexity is combined with restraint, some wonderful things can happen.
At the same time, I realize that this same form of argument can be made for punk, and I agree that simplicity combined with tastefulness can be great; but when simplicity is done for simplicity's sake, or without much thought, it just reeks of immaturity.
