controversial movie/book/non-metal music opinions thread

Rain Dogs and Swordfishtrombones are my favorite Waits albums, though I really like the What's He Building in There? so I'll make sure to check out Mule Variations.

And yeah, as much as I respect Dylan, I really don't like listening to his music (my dad always played Dylan in the car >_>)

ugh i'm so pissed off that you guys don't like dylan and, worse, are criticising his singing voice. his voice is so perfect for the material, there's like a handful of vocalists you can say that about. 'bringing it all back home' is such a great album (esp the b-side), better than anything that heavy-handed maudlin prick cohen could ever come up with (although i like cohen and had a kind of obsession with master song for a while). the moment i realised that the byrds' version of mr tambourine man is just worse in every way compared to dylan's was kind of an epiphany for me at the time, his tense, rambling, venomous, quietly tragic tone is really hard to get a hold of at first and when it clicked i realised just how deaf the untrained ear can be.

lol @ 'santana > hendrix'. um no.

i don't really like prog rock or punk rock much in practice, but i like the latter more in theory. i can't be doing with all that stately grandiose affected emotionally sterile flowery wanking bullshit thank you very much. and yes i know that's a gross generalisation, but the few exceptions basically prove the rule.

i've never really explored tom waits. i should do that...

I'm listening to "Smooth" because of this thread. Probably not better than Hendrix but I like this song. Reminds me of the early 2000s.

I completely agree with you. It is very rare for me to actively dislike a type of music but prog rock just provokes an extremely negative reaction in me. I find it to be the opposite of what I want out of music. Prog Rock to me is so far removed from emotion that it's impossible for me to enjoy. To me it sounds like instruments playing for a certain length of time, not actual songs if that makes any sense.

I'm usually labeled as a prog fan, but I don't like prog for prog's sake. I appreciate progressive elements tastefully balanced with good songwriting and melody (which is why I enjoy Jethro Tull and Genesis more than, say, Brand X). When it is done right, I find that it can be the culmination of an emotional experience. Simplicity is fine, but when true talent and complexity is combined with restraint, some wonderful things can happen.

At the same time, I realize that this same form of argument can be made for punk, and I agree that simplicity combined with tastefulness can be great; but when simplicity is done for simplicity's sake, or without much thought, it just reeks of immaturity.

I don't like a lot of prog metal and newer prog rock music I have heard.Brand X is more jazz fusion than prog, but not into their music.

I doubt that this is controversial here, but I do not see the draw towards Muse, especially they're new album.I dunno, they are fucking humungous now and the music seems to be deteriorating more than anything

Prog basically leaves a lot of room for shit, but at its best it's easily some of the best music of all time.
