controversial movie/book/non-metal music opinions thread

I completely agree with you. It is very rare for me to actively dislike a type of music but slam death just provokes an extremely negative reaction in me. Slam death to me is so far removed from emotion that it's impossible for me to enjoy. To me it sounds like instruments playing for a certain length of time, not actual songs if that makes any sense.
Normally I'd argue with you but this post is so well written I just can't.

I don't really enjoy Santana at all; his new material is awful shit. His older material is mediocre. He never really impressed me.

Santana's early stuff is pretty good actually. Especially his album with John McLaughlin which is wonderful.

Muse rip off so much shit from Radiohead its ridiculous. Radioheads Exit Music is basically the blueprint for most of muse's work. plus they have giant teddy bears in they're new music , and use a Analogue Systems French Connection controller that emulates an Ondes Martonet, which was made specifically for Jonny greenwood.

maybe I just love Radiohead to much?

I've read some stuff by Asimov and found him really boring and far too self-involved, too-in love with the concept of his novels, if you know what I mean. Let see I've read: Caves of Steel, The Naked Sun and The End of Eternity. Pretty weak, imo.

yeah, that's the impression i get of most of this hard sci-fi stuff

and yeah i love radiohead too (although not ok computer really) but i'm pretty sure if i never heard radiohead i still wouldn't like muse. the only reason they trick people into thinking they aren't dull is because they're so flashy and affected, but to me that makes them even worse. it feels so soulless. also STOP FUCKING BREATHING DOWN THE MIC BELLAMY YOU'RE NOT FUCKING RAMBO

Vihris' non-metal taste is great.
I still haven't cracked Gong open, though. A bunch of spaced out drugged up hippies, imo.

Tbh I don't listen to Gong that much, they are a bit hard to sit through. I still have a lot of respect for them though, as they have done some really creative stuff.

Muse has got to be one of the most obnoxious rock bands considered "great" today. Their vocalist's singing voice is the most laughable caricature of a whiny wrist-slitting emo, it's actually painful to listen to him.

On the subject of Muse... I'm not sure I'm going to defend them but to those of you calling Muse a Radiohead ripoff, I don't see where the fuck you're coming from. They're influenced by Radiohead, obviously, but a ripoff? Whatever you're talking about, I'm not hearing it.

I like Muse to an extent. I haven't heard their latest album, but I did not find Black Holes on par with their earlier output, Origin of Symmetry especially. There's a sense of urgency, sometimes apocalyptic trauma about it. Take Micro Cuts, GIANT KNIVES RAINING FROM THE SKY or whatever that dream was about. It's climactic and overdramatic but I like it and I can't think of any other band that does quite the same thing.

The lyrics have themes like science fiction and death and stuff I can relate to and they're written remotely intelligently but... Err, I feel like there's some challenge missing. I look at their lyrics and think "oh, this is almost like something I could have written" and that's the problem.

It is absoloutely absurd to compare Muse, Coldplay and Radiohead. I'm not a fan of Muse, but their first album Origin of Symetry has some very well put together tunes on it. Nothing like the cliche, boring tracks they've been putting out in recent years.
