Death Appreciation Thread

finally a thread for this amazing band! one of my alltime favorites, been listening to Symbolic a lot lately, and decided that my band is gonna cover Empty Words for our show in a few months. RIP Chuck

Chuck had a way of creating songs striking a beautiful balance between simplicity and complexity. He added just enough melody to deem the music 'melodic' but it still had enough heaviness to satisfy the average headbanger. There was a sense of passion and sincerity in his music not found often in the genre. His music, especially from Human onwards, is timeless, imo.

I know - I wanted to make the thread, but I did a search first to make sure it hadn't been covered before. I was amamed that it hadn't. Terrible oversight IMO.

I'm not a musician, so I don't understand the technical details, but the overlapping of the bass and the guitars with the syncopated drumming is amazing.

"Do you live my life or share the breath I breeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeathe?"

Too bad they're gone - can you imagine an Opeth/Death concert?!

So what do you all think of Control Denied? I wasn't really hugely impressed with The Fragile Art of Existance myself. It sounds like a mix between Iron Maiden and Death that somehow just doesn't quite work for me. I generally see a lot of praise for it though, so maybe I'm missing something.

As for Death, Symbolic is hands down my favourite. Sound of Perseverance and Individual Thought Patterns are great too. I don't really care much for the stuff before that (I have Human and Leprosy but they don't get many spins really, I just rarely feel like listening to them).

Control Denied is good and I rate it right up there with the best Death albums. There are some moments of pure gold on that album, but many of the songs took a while to grow.

Control Denied is also worthy of praise, yes indeed.

Control Denied is really good. The vocals by Tim Aymar are a little more power metal than I expected. There's also something about the lyrics... they remind me of the kind of things that a "deep" high school kid writes about, thinking they have discovered life's truths (btw, that was me in '90) only to have an adult tell them, "No shit... you're a regular Aristotle..." Part of it is the delivery of the vocals. He's almost too sincere... This is especially true on "What If", I think. They are concepts that are better explored lyrically through symbol and metaphor, I think. Just something I've been thinking about since hearing the album.

But the real joy is the music. The guitars are great, of course. My favorite aspect has to be the bass by Steve DiGiorgio, though. Very cool.

control denied could have been great. but it simply wasnt. one reason? Tim Aymar. maybe one of the worst vocalists in metal history. somewhat unknown fact: warrel dane was originally up for the vocalist slot for control denied, but it didnt work out. tim aymar became the replacement, and destroyed that album as we know it.

I wouldn't say "destroyed", but otherwise, I pretty much agree. Interesting about Warrel Dane. Although, he can be kind of annoying, too, imo.

ITP is completely and utterly brilliant in brutality and complexity. Every musican which contributed for that album seemed to really find something within themselves. Its a whirlwind of technical wizardry and catchy hooks.
I also loved Human when i came out and remember creaming my pants when i heard it.
Leprosy was my first, i think i was 13 when it came out. I was blown away by it.

crying shame....i heard some samples of that album and the vox totally put paid to any further listens. Dane would have been incredible with that lot.

SOP wasn't great for me, i didnt like chucks different vox.

I have Symbolic, ITP and Human, and have heard Live in LA and Control Denied. Symbolic is practically flawless, while the others are great too. I also agree that the vocals for Control Denied are the main turn off for me, but it's not that bad.

And I personally could not get over the sound of the live album. The drums sound atrociuos, and they're right up in front, making it hard to hear the guitars. A lot of the times I just couldn't make out the riff that they were playing. Though I respect the fact that NOTHING was changed in the studio (or at least, thats what they say), but that doesn't mean it had to sound that bad.

Anyway, Empty Words and Trapped In A Corner ftw!
