I've just started listening to Raventale. I was never into death metal before but some of their songs are so kickass. Heavy but melodic.

Could you explain to me how to tell if something is death metal then? If it has the "death metal" growling vocals and is heavy, I just sort of assumed it was death metal. For example, when I think of black metal, I imagine the sort of rasping / shrieking vocals it's associated with, and when I think of doom metal, I think of, for example, Type O Negative or Saint Vitus. Since Raventale sounded nothing like either one of those, I didn't picture it as black or doom. I am relatively inexperienced at this though.
