There are very few words that can accurately describe a band like Deathspell Omega. Unnatural is probably the best word to use, but that doesn’t even begin to describe the pure emotion in this latest release Fas -- Ite, Maledicti, In Ignem Aeternum. From the start you’re taken to a cursed place where the lines separating reality and the insanity are blurred. The listener is given the opportunity to explore this musical purgatory and experience emotions of pain, sorrow, and rage that few people can truly understand and appreciate.

How did they accomplish this? The answer is simple: crushing guitars, a boatload of reverb, and pure human emotion. Musically, this album seems to break free of all boundaries, frequently leaving time and structure behind. Riffs often seem random, like they are playing whatever they feel at the time. But in reality it really isn’t random at all. Just because the path isn’t clear doesn’t mean there isn’t a plan. Hidden behind the blasting drums and frenzied melodies there are patterns just like any song. But you have to dig through the insanity to find it, just like you would dig through the mind of a psychopath to find their true nature as a human. In essence this album paints the picture of an individual struggling with their life. On the surface you see nothing but madness, but as you dig deeper you discover their true nature.

Fas -- Ite, Maledicti, In Ignem Aeternum is a phenomenal album that takes everything we know about the world and turns it upside down, leaving us to pick up the pieces. Those of us who can sort through it will be rewarded with an amazing musical experience. For those who can’t, well… sorry.

9.5/10 and the only thing stopping me from giving it a 10/10 is the fact that Si Monumentum is better and 10 is the highest you can go.

Was handed a promo copy of this the other day and it literally knocked my head off.

Never been a black metal fan but this is an intelligent, well constructed album on par with with a piece of baroque art. A feast for the mind and senses to be sure.

Have the full album on order now.

Listening to this is like being catapulted into a void in Hell. For the full affect, burn one, make the room as black as ink, put on a good set of headphones and let this take you where ever it will. It will demand your attention, smother and crush, make you feel small and weak. And strangely reward you for your effort. This is Black metal art. If Cradle of Filth is your definition of BM, don't go near this.

After the brilliant Si... and Kenose, this became a little too chaotic for my tastes. Will give it another shot though.
