Do you like metal?

I like heavy metal music and it is the majority of what i listen too.

I also listen to some hard rock bands like soundgarden, tool.

I personally can't stand rap/punk or the vast majority of radio ga-ga but if some ppl like that and like metal good for them.

It sounds elitest and i know it's just music but their ARE people who's life is metal, they sacrifice being able to discuss j-lo's newest cd with the in crowd, they sacrifice the incrowd.

Metal is music for outsiders (not exclusivly but generally) a point which is hard to refute given teh whole fuck you, fuck the world mentality that permiates through the whole metal scene.
Metal bands the 'outsiders' together, gives them a purpose. It forms a brotherhood. it gives them something to do and to belive in. It gives them the feeling of power and when alot of them (metalheads) are powerless against alot of things (eg the pop scene, society, parents, peers) this is a reason why it speaks to them so strongly.

To continue: In this repect, it's more than just the music, it's an attitude too, and to some it's a way of life...when people take this thing taht is such an integral part of a persons make up and so strongly defines who they are and uses it as a device for creating an image then yuo can see how it can create this notion of true metal head and why some people are focused on this subject. And alos why some people are hostile towads 'posers' Particularly when the very people that use this, are at times the people and groups they are rebeling against, and this is where the nu-metal hating comes from i belive: it caters for the tastes of these very people and is fed to them on mtv and the radio "if yuo want that tuff guy image then slap a bit of limp BIZCUT on ur cd player".

It's not my place to judge but you(i) find it hard not too: My opinion is that Metal is not a fasion statement, however if people have a genuine interest in the music then so be it. i don't mind if they(anyone) listen(s) to britney spears and the fuckin goo goo dolls as well as nile, that's their tastes.

{it might be a bit over the top but i am jsut illustrating a point. when i say gives a feeling of power, don't take it the wrong way: but for instance when a kick arse riff comes on you feel like you can do anything. I'm not meaning to imply that metalheads are generally loosers who have to do what mummy and daddy say either just using some examples.
i'm also generalising here but there is no denying it....of course i don't mean it is exclusive, anyone can listen to metal, i'm trying to point out why this topic exists.}

I in no way expect people to agree with my points of veiw, they are jsut that, my point of view.

i like fkin 'evy death metal like cradle of filf innit and limp bizkit an slipknot yeah innit, fuckin 'evy man, yeah anyways.... i try not to be narrow minded with my tastes but i admitt my tastes are dominated by metal. I like other genres such as some punk, hardcore, gothic/ambient stuff, some industrial and blah blah, i'll shut up

I would say i listin to %95 metal and %5 classical music. And i find metal to be linked with classical music so i considre them one thing. I have over a fourhundred metal cds and quite a few lps. So i would say that i am very into heavy metal.

I'm not very open minden about this thing; If he/she does not like metal than that person can never be my true friend. I cannot understand and take these ppl seriously, I'll always be out of reach for them.

Metal is my life, I cannot listen to anything else, maybe some classic music but not that radio thing; I am literally sick of this last one.

I am not a metalhead. I love metal music, but I really think a lot of people get carried away making it the primary focus of their life. If that lessens your opinion of me, I don't really care.

Yeah, true, I can see where you're coming from. While I love metal music, I don't look like a metalhead and people are often surprised when I tell them that I listen to metal, even though I do have the metalhead mentality sometimes.

One of the hypocrisies shared by some metalheads is that they are all like, 'I don't give a shit what anyone thinks', but they pay so much attention to their image and dress up so stereotypically, it proves that they do give a shit what others think of them. They go to great lengths to appear all 'hardcore' and shit. If they truly didn't care about other people's opinions then why can't they just look like ordinary people and not worry about image?

I certainly do think that some metalheads get a bit carried away with the metal thing to the point of not giving a shit about anything else. The fact that you mentioned it doesn't lessen my opinion of you at all.

AMEN.
For all the shit they talk about being different, the majority of metal fans sure enjoy their leather uniforms.
I got alot of angry looks when I went to the last Nile show in an ALF t-shirt.People need to chill the fuck out.

Metal is alright man but good God, of course I have other stuff I listen to. I'm not closed minded and my taste in music is pretty diverse. I dig classical music, oldies, classic rock, hard rock, metalMichael Jackson,Madonna).

Here's a list of my 5 favorite bands. You tell me what I would be considered as.

Maiden/Dickinson solo also
Tull
Floyd
GnR
Led Zep

Some others:

Kiss
The Beatles
Motley Crue
Ozzy/Sabbath
Metallica

Four or five years ago I was really closed minded about music. Only metal and only metal that was "real" metal. If a band had e.g. some electronics in their songs, I blamed the song for not being metal. I've grown up since that and my taste of music has opened up a lot. I listen to new music with much less prejudice nowadays, I actually really like the electronic stuff I used to hate, I have come to realize that not all non-metal music is crap and I've found lots of bands/artists that I like outside of the scope of metal. Metal is still my absolute favorite though and I consider myself metalhead, but not a closed minded one. Only music I still very closed mindedly hate is rap. I just can't stand that.

Yes, I do like metal!

Being I am almost 30, and got my first dose of metal when I was 14, yes...I am metal.
It is a way of life to me..not a phase. It's being myself and being true to myself.
I LOVE metal in all forms, but...I do like other forms of good music(GOOD being the word here!)

One of the big things about metal was that we were supposed to be who we were, do what we were going to do, and accept no limits..by saying...I AM METAL>>ONLY METAL!-you have put yourself in a box like the mainstream people...exactly what metal was against.

My job(pro fine dining chef) is low paying..I could easily go get a corporate job, be a buck passer, and get paid more; but that would not be true to myself. Hence I do what I love to do, no matter how little I get paid...I follow my soul.

Now that is metal!

Then there is something about that low E chord on a guitar with lots of distortion that just causes you to want to mosh....

very well said metalchef \m/ I used to be very narrow minded, if it wasnt growling and double bass drums i didnt like it but i can listen to anything from katatonia to nile to converge to afi. Ok its all rock but still, pretty diverse. The only music i just cannot and will not respect is garage, rap and pop for many reasons. ive probably just repeated myself havent i

I am definitely a metalhead. I've been listening to metal for over 12 years. There was a time when I only listened to death metal, but nowadays I listen to all kinds of metal, from Nile and Cryptopsy to Lacuna Coil and Katatonia. I'd still say that I'm close minded though, as I don't like any music that doesn't have distorted electric guitars and isn't dark in nature. I can't stand hip hop, alternative shlock rock, and pop.

I also listin to metal when i wake up... listin to metal the whole day.. and play metal to go to sleep... and keep metal playing while i am sleeping so i have a sound track to my dreams.
