Does black metal have to be Satanic?

I'm sure this thread has been made before, but I'm just wanting your opinions.

Euronymous is the founder of modenr black metal and he said the main thing about black metal was that it was Satanic. However, several black metal bands(even from the early Norwegian scene) weren't Satanic. Burzum has no Satanic lyrics, and Varg has said many times he doesn't believe in Satan anymore than he believes in God. Same with Immortal.

Today many black metal bands are National Socialist and dont focus on religion at all, just politics/ racism.

So do you go along with Euronymous that black metal must be Satanic/nihilistic or do you think it's just about the necrosound and being anti-mainstream but doesnt have to have anything to do with Satan or evil?

no it does not...a lot of Black metal is anti-religion but that does not mean it is setanic.

True, but some people would argue that if it isn't Satanic, it isnt "true" black metal.

And Euronymous said it had to be Satanic and since he is the founder it would seem like what he said goes.

I usually just think of bands like Burzum that arent Satanic as Pagan metal and not really black metal even though I know they "officially' are bm.

Does death metal have to be about screaming bloody gore?
Does power metal have to be about dragons?
Does doom metal have to be about fearing satan coming to get you?

Did the founder of any of those genre's say it had to be about those things? No.

Did the founder of black metal say it has to be Satanic? Yes.

No black metal does not have to always be satanic. Infact there are many bands who have said that they are strictly against satanism and it's practices/beliefs. There is even a subgenre of black metal called unblack metal or "white" metal where the artists have christian beliefs.

It depends on the band really. What makes black metal so awesome is the fact it's a genre that could really go anywhere in terms of self expression.

If you do your research on the Norwegian scene you will find most of these bands weren't actually satanic at all, they simply used lyrics involving the devil and anti Christian beliefs due to what their homeland was put through by the Christians in an attempt to "reclaim" their old gods. But they don't hold any stock in satanism itself.

Venom founded black metal, really, and they WERE Satanic. For the record.

But no. You can have Christian black metal and Satanic hair metal and Buddhist grindcore and anything else. Music is just noise and can be paired with any ideology.

Euronymous founded modern black metal.

Venom didnt play black metal music at all. They were just one of the first openly Satanic bands.
