Doom Metal

Great topic so far. Surprisingly I haven't seen either Warning (UK) or Solstice mentioned. Warning is killer traditional doom while Solstice is great epic doom.

Somebody mentioned Funeral (Norweigan) once, but i'll go ahead and throw the word in for them. Absolutely excellent funeral doom band, check out Tragedies and their latest output, From These Wounds. Both are different, but they both are wonderful pieces of art.

Also, check out Agalloch, good folk doom. I'd check out early Anathema (Pentecost III especially), Solitude Aeturnus, My Dying Bride, Katatonia and Asunder. Also check out Celtic Frost's Monotheist, which is a mix of Goth and Doom.

I'm not sure about dISEMBOWELMENT, because I checked out some of their releases and the production is absolutely horrid, hard to get into. It's like the Morbid Angel of production, but worse. They are not a bad band by any means, but the production value kills it.

From these wounds is not really Funeral Doom, it is just very slow, melancholic doom metal, it is an utter dirge. Brilliance.

Tragedies is indeed great, you can get it with Tristesse, their first release and the prototype for all funeral doom.

WHAAAAA?! diSEMBOWELMENT are legendary!

Sabin Frost: That's true, but I meant Funeral's overall discography comprises of Funeral Doom, which From These Wounds being the exception. I actually heard somebody call it Funeral Dirge.

Ohio: By no means are they bad at all, and the musicianship is great, but the recording is just a total turn off. This is like Morbid Angel, they have brilliant material in their discography, but they suffer from crappy recording.

Imagine seeing this chick but she's hairier than Chewbacca. However, underneath all that hair lies this extremely hot babe. If you can shave all that fur off, you'll recognize how hot this chick really is (probably gives good head too).

So, same with dISEMBOWELMENT. They're a great band (You're Prophetic Throne of Ivory and Nightside of Eden are cool songs), but the recording makes it hard to get into unless you're a super mega lvl 50 die hard doom fan, instead of a casual doom listener. I suppose it's all about atmosphere.

Also, i'll give them props for being one of the pioneers of death/doom.

I wouldn't call it a funeral dirge, those exist, they used to get played at funerals :D It still has distorted riffs etc. It can be considered Metal.

If you like Funeral's early work and Funeral doom in general, check out Mournful Congregation. No female vocals like some of Funeral's work but it is brilliant funeral doom. I wont really go over them again because I have mentioned them once in this thread but they are well worth checking out.

Interesting you say that, because I actually was scavenging the web for them. Unfortunately, I couldn't find them conveniently through iTunes or Limewire. I really do want to hear some material by them, perhaps i'll shell out some bucks for an album.
