Doom Metal

Anyone heard Griftegard? Very cool Swedish doom with Ola from I Hate Records on guitar.
Griftegard is really nice, one of the better releases this year.
I liked The Doomsday Cult more though, kinda sad they disbanded. I need to peer pressure the I Hate guys into releases their stuff on CD. :p

Can't believe no-one has mentioned Tristania yet. They came a bit close to that commercialised gothic metal on their latter releases, but Widow's Weeds and to a lessser extent Beyond the Veil are essential gothic doom.

I don't mind Tristania but there are a few other gothic-doom bands who were perhaps less influential that I prefer, you heard Trail of Tears? The black metal element of their music really gives them something extra.

good doom is:

my dying bride
paradise lost
anathema
tiamat
candlemass
solitude aeturnus
paramaecium
saturnus
cathedral
venni domini
katatonia
theatre of tragedy
the gathering

i think you know many bands from this list, but i felt that i should recomend these bands

Just got around to listening to Void of Silence - Human Antithesis

Holy shit. Fucking epic.

Completely agreed. Funeral doom with female vocals is pretty rare so you might want to chase down funeral's other album from that era In Fields of Pestilent Grief.
Yeah, I'll have to check this one out.

The Gathering are good. whats everyone's opinion on Bethlehem? (dark metal, yadda yadda yadda, whatever)

Aarni
Obscure doom metal. Like hippies playing metal at campfire. Or something like that. World of Aarni is full of little details, that fascinates.

Dolorian
Finlands greatest doom band including members from legendary dark metal band Black Swan. Dolorian presents very deep and atmospheric sound ambiences with glooming doom guitars. Though their second, self titled album had only little fragments of metal, atmosphere is pure doom. Voidwards was even better and I have to say I love their guitar sounds and very jazz-like drumworking. Something greater. First album was good too, but not so touching and haunting.

Doom:VS
Solo project of Draconian -guitarist. Swallow the Sun meets My Dying Bride meets Shape of Despair and so on. I liked this debut album Aeternum Vale more than any of albums Draconian have made.

Draconian
If I'd list top 100 bands from Sweden, I am sure Draconian will be included! Their material is great, nice to listen, but too much MDB in it. Swallow the Sun plays it better.

Mar de Grises
Only band from Chile that I know and very surprising. On their first album were influences here and there and even something in common with Arcturus is to be heard. Very colourful and complicated doom masterwork.

Reverend Bizarre
Great band with great albums. I haven't heard them all, but these guys have some imagination. Doom metal perfectionism, not 100% my stuff but I can say I admire their style much.

Shape of Despair

Dark and veeeery slow funeral doom. Good but not great.

Swallow the Sun

Hard and heavy, doomy and gloomy. Great since their debut, that is still my fav. But I haven't heard Hope yet...

Void of Silence

Melancholic and depressive doom. Some weird industrial element in their dark music is great. I like very much their two last albums.

Other bands I've listened but not much to say anything about:
Anathema (earlier albums), Forest of Shadows, Novembers Doom, Umbra Nihil

Anyone know of any other good funeral doom with female vocals?
In some reviews I found via google, Skumring were referred to as funeral doom (or at least related to it), whereas others classified their music as atmospheric doom. So check for yourself to find out if they are what you are looking for or not. If you don´t mind some atmospheric doom with female vocals, I´d recommend the first two releases by The 3rd And The Mortal, "Sorrow" and "Tears Laid In Earth".

I just listened to Skumring's album... definitely the kind of thing I was looking for. Thanks.

As for The 3rd and the Mortal, I've already heard Sorrow but still need to check out Tears Laid in Earth.

Don't know if they've been mentioned yet, but I've just discovered Hyponic (China). According to metal-archives, they played early death/doom and later funeral doom. So far I'm enjoying their "The Noise Of Time" album. Great lyrics too.

If you like the first two releases by The 3rd And The Mortal, you should also give Ava Inferi a try. The new song "Pulse Of The Earth" definitely isn´t doom and I don´t know what the other songs on the new album will sound like, but listen to "Fate Of Mountains" from their debut "Burdens" - I think this is in the vein of what you are looking for.

np: Agnes Buen Garnås & Jan Garbarek - "Hot æ dæ fe noko vesolt væ"
