Favorite Doom Metal bands

Moonspell are a great band, they're friends of ours and we've played a couple shows with them before. Hopefully we'll get to play with them again sometime. I'm quite curious to hear the new album of theirs soon.

Novembers Doom > Moonspell

We don't see ourselves as being in competition with them, we're big fans of theirs actually. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and taste of course, but I think stylistically that we and Moonspell are so different, you can't really compare the two anyhow.

I should add "to me". Moonspell is quite boring to me, ND is always worth of listening.

I really like Moonspell, but sometimes I think they started by trying to do music like Tiamat. But... they are not as good as Tiamat...that's for sure

Here's my moonspell story:

I read reviews saying they were good, especially "Irreligious." So I go out and buy Irreligious without downloading any samples or anything. When the vocals enter on the first track I burst out laughing. AAAAAH PEEEE OOOOM! Man that guy's clean voice is ridiculous on that album.

Then I couldn't make it to the end cause practically all the songs were as boring as fuck. I tried to listen to it again a couple times. I sold it the next time I went to a used store.

Their last album wasn't so bad, though. But they sure aren't very good!

 ahahaahahah!
I agree. Although I like them pretty much, Fernando Ribeiro has not a good clean voice at all! Some of their albums are good, others are not.
For example, Wolfheart is quite good.
One of the albums I like the most is Sin/Pecado. That's because it's more electronic, and not so "we are goth/metal, so hear us!"
It's a different work.
But in my opinion they got better in their music lately.
Even if you don't like Moonspell, you can see now that, at least, they know what they're doing.

I love Fernando's clean voice. Of course his accent tends to make him sing and pronouce his words in an "odd" way but I think it gives him his own unique sound. I think Moonspell are actually one of the best bands in the scene right now. They evolve with each album and add new things, have interesting lyrical concepts, etc. I can do without the umpteen slow doom bands who can't let go of their early Paradise Lost/MDB/SKepticism infatuation, or the overabundance of bands still trying to sound like Helloween.

When I first heard Moonspell, it was from the Wolfheart album, and I thought it was very good. When Irreligious came out, I was a bit disappointed, mostly because I think the album sounds like one loooooong song. But I do think their music is very good, and has "aged" nicely...and Fernando's voice is one of the reasons...he's unique, a quality I like in good bands...I find it annoying when you hear a band and can't place them because they sound too much like everyone else.

Thanks to Miss Lie I just discovered this website...let's see if I enjoy this.

I just wanted to say that Moonspell's new record will attract alot of new fans and shut alot of critics as well. Their haters usually describe them as "boring"...and honestly I want to see them saying that after the release of their new album Memorial. It's the heaviest they ever done after their black-metal project, Daemonarch. It's really, really brutal and will be one of the best metal albums of this year without a doubt.

(And yes, I'm going to buy the original stuff)

Answering the topic:

Swallow the Sun basically.
I'm not much into doom metal. Half are too much melodramatic and corny. I like the modern sound of doom that include some death metal and magnificence into it or bands like YOB, Why Angels Cry, etc.
Heard alot of good critics about Novembers Doom...I will check their work.

It's not really the accent that bugs me, it's the ridiculously overdone vibrato and faux-opera stylings...he reminds me of a really bad version of Peter Steele.

I'll have to check the new album out, though...as I said the previous was actually pretty good.

How's "the butterfly effect?" Someone burned that for me once and I never got around to listening to it...

I don't think he sounds anything like Peter Steele personally, I think he sounds alot like the singer from Root actually. Seeing as Fernando is a fan of theirs and even guested on one of their cds, I guess that makes sense. Fernando's clean vocals do have a gothic "romantic" vibe to them that I can see not being everyone's cup of tea.

Actually from what I understand, there's very little of the clean vocals on the new Moonspell album, it's reportedly the heaviest thing they've done in ages, so for fans of that style I think this new album would probably be worth checking out.
