GMD Poll: Slayer's Discography Ranked

I agree with that, Show No Mercy is fun, rough and a bit sloppy. I don't think it represents their genius or peak in any way, especially not when put next to Reign in Blood, Hell Awaits or even South of Heaven.

It's kinda like Scream Bloody Gore, regardless of whether it's your favourite Death album or not, I don't think you could argue it was the height of Death's genius. Not even a little bit.

it's the equivalent of a great low budget charming b-movie, and some b-movies are better than a lot of arthouse classics if you ask me. it's just that with HA and RiB we're talking about fuckin' peak tarkovsky or something :p

that analogy doesn't rly work but fuck it

I disagree with this. And Seasons is far more in line with the true Slayer sound than SoH. They actually listened to all their disgruntled fans when recording Seasons.

Not at the height of their genius, but that album is pure Death and i dont see how it can not be considered so. And a shit load of people consider it their best, same goes for the first Slayer album. I know this forum is in a world of its own, but in reality i know far more people who consider Show No Mercy to be their best rather than Hell Awaits.

What would you consider the height of Deaths genius? Leprosy? And SBG is "not even close" you say?

and a little off topic, but i read a Matt harvey interview where he basially shit on Death over and over(@Sirjack and he did say how him and thousands of others thought Human is where they fell off for them ;)). The guy is a legit fucking douche. I will never touch his Gruesome records again.

Seasons/Reign/South are perfection. I haven't paid much attention to their last few (not missing much based on brief listening), but God Hates Us All was complete trash aside from Bloodline which was mildly entertaining.

Seasons in the Abyss (1990)
Reign in Blood (1986)
South of Heaven (1988)

Hell Awaits (1985)
Show No Mercy (1983)
Diabolus in Musica (1998)
Divine Intervention (1994)

World Painted Blood (2009)
Repentless (2015)
Christ Illusion (2006)
God Hates Us All (2001)

Related question: I remember having an mp3 a long time ago of Seasons In The Abyss title track that had a similar, but alternate solo to the normal version of the track. It wasn't a live recording and everything else in the song was identical. Any ideas?

neither of the first two are that popular irl in my experience, it's usually the next three that get mentioned. MA and RYM have hell awaits rated higher than SnM tho

Not talking popularity. I know a bunch of people that dislike SoH, a bunch. I dont think i know a single person who dislikes SNM(outside of a certain tosser here). And its not like anyone here can argue that most of their die-hard fans were not happy with that SoH when it first came out. Seasons was a somewhat apology to that same fanbase.

Well, the true Slayer sound may not be synonymous with Slayer's genius. I think South of Heaven, while not as you say yourself a very typical sounding Slayer record, unlocked brand new dimensions in their writing that puts that album in a unique realm of its own.

It's that kind of context that can lead to an album being considered Slayer's true genius record. I'm sure @Satanstoenail chose that album as his #1 favourite because it doesn't really sound like much else by Slayer.

Fyi, for the longest time Show No Mercy was my favourite Slayer album but the enthusiasm on this board for Hell Awaits caused me to revisit it and it slowly exceeded my love for the debut. I'm only telling you this because I don't want you to mistake what I said for me shitting on Show No Mercy or anything.

Scream Bloody Gore is my personal favourite Death record, but due to its primitivism I don't think it could be called Death's peak and I'm pretty sure that is bolstered by popular opinion. If I were rating Death's peak based on complex playing, interesting songwriting, heaviness and intensity (things usually associated with "top-tier" or "genius" albums in death metal) I would probably pick Human.

Pretty sure Leprosy is Death's most popular album though, right?

Same here. As I said, Show No Mercy is much more accessible than Hell Awaits and accessible albums tend to be a band's most popular album regardless of genre. Hell Awaits isn't very accessible imo, it has a very dense atmosphere, it's almost grinding. I basically wrote it off as boring when I first heard it.
