Guitar Player's Thread

After playing few years for 4 hours straight everyday I got bored of it. I'm not in band anymore too and I don't have patience to sit down and actually practice.

RSP2400 enhances the sound-don't ask me in what way..it is very complicated unit. It also has a built in noisegate. They are rare, but when you find them, they should be cheap. I got mine for like 70€ shipped from german ebay more than a year ago.

I would chop off my left nut for Nazgul's gear :worship:

And question for you more experienced people in songmaking.

I'm trying to get my COBOT Album track's volume as high as I can get it without clipping. I have understood that you can use compressors/limiters for this. But I have almost no idea how they work, and my end result is either..

-Too "compressed" i.e not punchy enough
-Too low
-Too high, resulting in clipping
-When parts in the song with only one instrument gets abnormally higher than it was when it's played alone. Then goes back to low volume when everything kicks in.

Got any tips? Would be greatly appreciated, as I would like to learn how to do this:)

mix it on low volume, send the mix and i will make it blast the fuck out of yer speakers

well, i imagine at least of read about what each button of the compressor does. if it's too compressed you can either change the Threshold to a higher DB, or diminish the ratio. Do a trial and error thing. If sounds too low or too high, most likely is the output gain.
a good compression is pretty much the balance between all the settings

if you have tried all this before, get a new compressor

Ok people, in general, the "best" setup for a master is EQ->Compressor->Limiter

Get a spectrum analyzer and take a look at how your mix is looking, EQ wise, chances are its extremely middy, and we all know by now that Mid in metal = good. Surely, but you dont want to end up with a EQ spectrum that looks like a mountain in the middle, you gotta try to even it out. Ofcourse go by your ear, but the spectrum analyzer(probably using a wrong term here, please do correct me those of you who know what the tool is named) can be of really good help in the start.

Remember to dont compress too hard, you don't want to end up sounding like metallica, dynamics are good.

What you benefit from most of all though, is experience. Keep making music and keep mixing and mastering yourself. This is like playing guitar, you gotta practice it too.

hi guyse, i just installed melodyne, does anyone has a single voice file to my play on? =D

yeah but, what does a limiter do exactly? And how the fuck do you start "mixing" and "mastering" by yourself? I mean, I know I've attempted it a few times, but I generally have no idea what the hell I'm doing when I do it.

Seriously who the fuck approves Tabs for ultimate-guitar.com?
I uploaded a at least 90% accurate tab for a song there and they rejected it. I thought they did it by accident since all my other tabs were approved without any problems. So I sent it again a few days ago. And those fuckers rejected it again! There's neither an equal tab nor did I mess up any data for it!

^Dunno, but they must be pretty retarded, some of the tabs over there are terrible.

Here a cover of Dream Theater that I've made today

p.s:sorry for the sloppy playing + I'm too lazy to learn the solo

If that's playing sloppy I wish I played as sloppy as you do  Great job man, and really nice tone! Still using ReValver and Pandora or what?

I dunno what a limiter does, but if I'm not mistaken mixing is putting all the tracks together into the song like you want them to sound (pannings, volumes, individual effects and that shit) and mastering is giving the final sound to the track as a whole. If I'm wrong someone correct me :)

I usually pan the guitars first, then start working with the compressors and EQ and then, finally, I add some reverb and stuff to the final thing.

Ohh alright. this makes sense. thanks Jose :)
I usually get a more muddied tone if I involve the compressor on my settings (unless I have it set really low and then I set the noisegate to help with cleaning up any "stray" sounds). But can someone explain how to operate the EQ?

Np :) Well, pro's will have a more sophisticated answer, till then I'll tell you that, with the compressor, I just tweak the bars till I find the sound I want. Takes a bit, but it's worth it. Same thing for EQ, but with the normal EQ (not the parametric) I tend to end up with a V more or less. As I said, till someone else with more experience gives a better explaination, error and trial is your friend. Just save the session before :)
