What he's been saying in almost every post in this thread is that having those retards quite significantly DETRACTS from the experience. I'm not much of a headbanger, so when I saw Opeth, I was happy to have a seated ticket. My friend Jonno, for example, had a ticket at the front of the venue, and along with almost everyone (the seated people, too) was headbanging like a demon. All of them, except to one guy next to him. Having one person stand still amidst a sea of headbanging metalheads is NOT conductive to a good time. Just the same as having some retard goths (and yes, I am aware of what I'm calling everyone - I'm flaming for a change and I hope you enjoy it) destroy excellent moments by being evil and strange and moping about shit.

I used to be "anti-elitist" like you cunts a few years ago, and one day I was so bored I found myself in a chatroom. Some people were talking about music, so I decided to ask them about some metal. Invariably, the question "have you guys heard Opeth?" popped up, and some positive replies came along. I was thinking "oh, this will be great - I'll post this chat log on the forum and show those elitist fags that people who listen to alternative or nu-metal can still enjoy Opeth". When asked what they liked about it, "Oh hay its so heavy1!``1one!" "omg I hart haervest" "its liek teh hveavy bands1!". Its like looking at a forest and saying "hay, its green, lols." If I were writing and releasing music at Opeth's previous standards, I would QUIT having read comments like that.

Now, I won't deny that Mumblefood has been a good friend of mine for the past 4 years - that isn't why I'm posting here. I'm not coming to save the day by flaming people so he can feel better. I KNOW he is an elitist, but we have to look at what he's so elitist about. It's not that we just sit here, and listen to Orchid and Morningrise all day, then throw on some Darkthrone for good measure. I've seen PART of his music collection (his 'travel case' consists of many, many hundreds of CD's) and I know firsthand that his musical tastes include more than just extreme metal. It's not so much a case of liking a certain genre, or a style of execution; its liking music that isn't shit.

I am new to the forum but I am not a new fan...not that any of that really matters. If someone discovers Opeth tomorrow I'd think that was pretty cool...but that's probably because I don't get my self esteem from listening to bands no one else has heard of so I can pretend I am better than everyone.
 
When did anyone say anything about listening to bands that noone has heard of? The focus is not having a musical experience ruined by others. Listening to a band that noone else knows will help, sure, but its not the sole aim here.

I thoroughly agree with both yourself AND Mumblefood. What you've both said is pretty much exactly how I feel myself.

I first came to this board because I wanted to discuss complex music with people who could communicate on a complex level. All I have found, with exceptions here and there, is a bunch of arrogant, unintelligent kids who listen to a bunch of mainstream bands playing diluted music, and then these kids think they know everything there is to know about the genre as a whole.

It's impossible to have a decent discussion with most Opeth fans these days, unless, in my experience, they are over 30 yrs old.

Some of us simply want to share thoughts about music and trade ideas and passions for our bands that we love.

Doing it here is a joke. I can only imagine what the next gig will be like, full of little aggressive children thinking they know everything there is to know with no education inside their brains.

Those are not the kind of people I wish to discuss anything artistic with.

So why do I keep posting here? Because I keep my fingers crossed thinking I might come across some like-minded, open-minded, intelligent and artistic thinkers who like to share aforementioned thoughts.

Many years ago I came to the conclusion that in my circle of life, there isn't really anybody to discuss the beauty of music with. The interpretation of something artistic is a very individualistic thing, and I don't expect anybody else to feel as I do about a particular song or band. I know there are people like me who exist (a few from this and past forum days), but that's about it.

I pumped $2,000 into my car sound system for one reason only - so I could enjoy my music. The car is the only time I truly have to myself (daily commute). At home there are distractions of family, owning a house, etc. In my car, it's me and my music. I haven't felt the need in years to discuss music with people. The search takes away from my enjoyment of my listening experience. I don't mean to offend, but I think a large percentage (>90%) of people who listen to music are surface listeners. For most, I don't believe music is a soulful thing as it is with me. If I happen upon somebody who is truly loves music, there are decent discussions.

I haven't posted here or in other forums for quite a while. I came back because of the new album, and like you, I was hoping to rekindle some decent Opeth discussion. There has been some, but in a short time, it will fade.
 
Every forum of every band I've liked that I've been a part of has always ended in disappointment. I've just learned to enjoy it alone.

Do not go to the Nile forum btw because that place is a nightmare! Although, I did get a PM from Karl telling me he thought Opeth were undeniably talented musicians and make awesome music in the wake of a massive shitstorm being taken on Opeth by pretty much the entire fucking forum.
 
you guys are making a big fuckin' deal out of this. Opeth changed record labels so what!! Callin them sell-outs won't change anything, thats your opinion not theirs. You honestly expect that opeth will change their musical direction to emocore just cuz their in a label thats dominated by Emofags, hell no!!Opeth has something that emo/hardcore don't have, and thats innovation. Opeth always had something new for us to hear over the years and never hanged on a specific concept so there.
I hope good ol' mikael gives a comment or 2 on this.
 
Yeah I have to agree with Metalman and mumblebee

I do understand the frustration with a lot of the fans from the 1997 Opeth era and that of the fans when this Opeth forum was first established.

I guess you could say all this kind of coincides with the music that Opeth has been putting-out since Blackwater Park. Even-though there all great albums as is Ghost Reveries, there are obvious "flashes" if not segments of commercialism on Opeth's most recent offerings as opposed to the first four records. It's these segments of commercialism that draw in a lot of these new shall we say primitive(at least in terms of Metal music general knowledge)mind-set kids to Opeth's music. And the music IS testament of this, just like Opeth's mixture of there mainstream type riffs and or vocals with there traditional "intellectual-esque" type material reflects the current state of the Opeth forum and the different kind of fans that are present here, which happens to conflict with the older fans.

And you know it's funny because I have this brother-in-law which I intoduced Opeth to back in 1999, it was the Morningrise album and he didn't really like it(if at all)then when Deliverance came out I decided to present him that just to see if he would enjoy it and sure enough he did( and of course it was the song Deliverance that really appealed to him)and this is from a person that's into popular metal/rock like SOAD, Deftones, and even Creed. So what does all this tell us you may ask? It indicates that once you start to drift away from a sound that is more "true" for exchange of something that is more diluted and poppy/catchy it begins to appeal to an audience that's into poppy metal like my aforementioned brother-and-law; and this is the issue with the previous generation of Opeth fans. It's the poppy attributes to Opeth's latest efforts that's bringing in all these ignorant fans.

But don't get wrong. I'm not saying that more accessible music is a bad thing. It could be a great thing if its done right. It's just the type of fans that it draws-in which is some what nerve-racking.

The only thing that upsets me about it is that it is the record company who markets a band. If they have opeth doing crappy videos and shorter edit versions this will be a bad thing. Remember a record comapny can control a bands image.
 
As far as the subject matter is concerned on this thread my opinon would be..no..I'm not upset in regards to Opeth's signing to Roadrunner. I think it's good for the band.

We all know that Opeth is not the type of band that is going to undergo some drastic change due to a bigger label and sacrifice a an already established genuine sound.
 
Opeth is a band that can play anything and its good. Better than anyother band out there for the most part. They could have signed to Jive records for all i care but I know that the music wasnt going to change. Plus it also has to do with the mind sets of the listeners, we probably are a bit older than the average metal listner ( that meaning 18-25) and that plays a big part ( IMO ) since some of the "younger" listners are use to say slipknot and coal chamber and soulfly...all of which are or were on RR.

If it means more places will carry there albums im all for it. If Opeth wants to turn around and play some charity shows for the hurricane and perform during the Super Bowl...well lets not go there. You get the idea.
