my thoughts exactly.

I heard the album when they were in belgium for the mixing.. And I must say I liked it better than RTR (which i liked very much). The opening track they had back then (cause tracklisting could change) was "(F)riend" and it totally blew me off my seat. There were two songs i didn't like all that much and after song 10 I kinda had the feeling they were using some sort of formula. you know, the way the songs were build kinda started resembling each other a bit. But the next song was totally different again so.. All in all, the first thing i thought when I heard it was: i wanna listen to this again and more closely, so that's a good sign..

Really? AWESOME. I liked RTR very much as well. I was talking to LAR about it
and he thought there was a Korn vibe to it but I couldn't find it after listening
to it last night, because I don't follow Korn, do you know what's possibly
referring to?

Good sign, indeed!

This a great post. :)

Thats very encourageing..........cause I too, liked RTR very much.......thank you for your observations!

I'll take Clayman and Reroute, probably the same as the older material...I like the sound of the newer stuff, more 'accessible'? it took a while to grow on me. When I want the really good shit, however, I turn to DZ. This is one 'side project' that is far better than the main band.

Annihilator, most CDs sound the same to me, esp some of the solos which use the same licks over and over-- but it all shreds, I really don't give a shit about it sounding the same. Some of the best songs (Schizos, Torn, Hell is War) And damn, that band's a revolving door around Waters...

Scrotumento in the House. What up!

Accessible, cause it's not completly br00tal death metal (dash of melody) such as Jesters Race. That's what the reference was implying. Slow it down
a little, add some groove, some spacy type vibe things and more rhythm/
melody type things. I love it nonetheless. To me, it's very original.

Hey Insania, I haven't heard that. What's it like?

Off, you don't think that the Jester Race is melodic???? I thought that cd, along with the first one, are considered the embodiments of melodic death metal.

I agree very much with the "formula" comment... IF seems to be falling into a formula to writing songs, and imo, without solos anymore (okay, solos longer than 5 secs), they are getting real boring. Just "Catchiness" and/or "heaviness" were never enough for me. But I remain optimistic, since they are very talented individuals! But again, like I said, after hearing Watch Them Feed I don't expect much. That song's first riff sounds like it was taken from a "nu-metal for dummies" book or something. :erk:

What do you mean by that?

All I meant was that just because I didn't care for (really didn't like it) Reroute I won't write the band off. It takes three bad for me to finally get it through my stubborn head....it's time to go.

OFF TOPIC BITCH: (On topic?) It's probably just me, but it seems like walking on eggshells in this forum. It seems my comments get taken out of context alot, and it's like I need a "qualifier" on every opinion.

So, in that vein. I have a strict policy of three strikes you're out MUSICALLY. In my humble lowest value opinion.

End of bitch. Now I'm pissed.

Dimension Zero -- the beaten, red-headed stepchild of In Flames' Jesper and Glenn...more thrashy, brutal, most excellent...
thrashy?....brutal?.....most excellent....?...and I have not heard this music?
.....Time to finally take "Exodus Tempo Of The Damned" off my cd.
Thanks Insania. Scrotumento mad representing!!!!

WHOA. I've heard the name but was unaware of who was in the band.
In passing I thought it was gay prog metal shit. I'll have to get some
DZ and check this out.

My words to LAR were something like br00tal death metal (with a dash of
melody). Perfection handed down from the metal gods.

So, uh,...I think you're saying the same thing as me.

Name one band that does not have a formula to their songwriting.
I'm not implying it doesn't happen, but I want to see who you come up
with.

Just "Catchiness" and/or "heaviness" were never enough for me.
Really? so why do you like the worst Metallica records known to man
and think Kill Em All stinks? I'm being rhetorical. Pls don't elaborate.
I'm being cheeky.

I heard an opinion that RTR was even nu-metal. What is this nu-metal?
Who are the nu-metal? I don't follow nu-metal much. I love OLD-metal.
That's on the trigger EP. Is there any difference? maybe.
They cover Genesis' "Land of Confusion" on there....whoa!...I've got
to hear that...I bet it's heavy. 80's pop done IF style....YES!

These are the songs expected on STYE...
- F(r)iend
- The Quiet Place
- Borders And Shading
- Discover Me Like Emptiness
- Touch Of Red
- Bottled
- Dead Alone
- Superhero Of The Computer Rage
- Like You Better Dead
- Dial 595-Escape
- Evil In A Closet
- In Search For I
- My Sweet Shadow

@Hemi, who's ragging your opinions? DE.-> you need to kick their ass.
Hemi's opinions kick ass.

On a lighter note, did you know that Dead_Lioness is in love with me?

Whoah whoah whoah. How is Jester Race at ALL brutal death? Touch of melody or no, it's about as far from "br00tal" as you can get while still remaining more-or-less DM.

I hated Reroute, personally. But that's just me.

We have different definitions of what br00tal is. I'm old. I listen to old
metal. I really don't listen to very many bands that have come out within
the last 10 years. I know of them, I hear what they do but I don't give a shit
about them. I've been listening to metal since before death metal began.
I've heard 'em all. To me br00tal isn't the same as what you think it is.

Fair enough?

One band that doesn't have a formula? That's too easy. The obvious is my band, which is me, myself, and I... none of my twenty/thrity-some songs are anything alike (contrary to a certain nameless individual's opinion :D ) . but another good one would be the Black League. My favorite band, I guess... they are really talented and unique individuals, and they most certainly do not have a formula for songwriting. Hell, the singer (Taneli Jarva, ex-Sentenced) wrote every single song off of the first album except for two, and they are all very original.

You're being rhetorical, but I'll answer anyway, since you don't know. To me, catchiness and heaviness are the same thing. They are the flip sides of the same coin. I've heard the exact same things called heavy, catchy and neither by different and even the same people... it's completely arbitrary. While catchiness/heaviness is good, since it clearly appeals to our minds on some level for some reason, it is not everything I look for... not even close! I look at the overall stucture of the song, how well it flows, how many repetitions are used, the emotions it tries to display, the message of the song, how the message is conveyed (lyrics)... but the first two, the structure and the flow, are probably the most important (although emotion is definitely a key part, it relies on these other two things to carry it through).

I can't stand when bands do the same verse/prechorus/catchy chorus thing over and over, which is what IF is doing more and more. They change it up, throw in a little interlude here and there, but it all comes down to the catchy chorus or the "br00tal riff" or whatever. That's why I'm more and more disappointed with every release they put out (although I like certain aspects of all their albums, don't get me wrong). My music isn't like that, and neither is the music of all the bands I really like.

So, I guess, to answer your question: I like the black album because they relaxed a bit. They let some more emotion into their music, not just angst and hate. Kill Em All was all about rebellion, and the metal revolution, and so on and so forth. I think it's too far before my time for me to appreciate it, really. I would've had to have been there, and experienced it. I know that they let more emotion into their music ever since Ride the Lightning, but I think the Black Album is the best balance they achieved with their emotions. Great tunes like Sanitarium and the Thing That Should Not Be will always have a special place in my heart, though...
