Actually, it's not. No-one here is debating that old Death isn't Death Metal. Look at the poll for fuck's sake.

I've heard a small handfull of arguments from metalheads stating that Death are not death metal but more along the lines of Thrash. I agree to a point & I know people feel more strongly about it than I do. I've heard a lot of arguments. Go to MA or Anus to see what I'm talking about.

The ANUS guys are responsible for most of the Chuck slandering, and their attempts at discounting Death's contribution to the genre are all part of their weird hate campaign, which was born out of the over-the-top Chuck worship when he died and since. I can understand their resentment of people ranting and raving about him like he was the greatest songwriter and musician to grace the planet, but the lengths they went to are quite bizarre really.

I think shunnig Death at first was done in order to promote the underground scene, and not for any other malicious purpose.
Then they came up with the idea that he embraced Christianity, quoting lyrics from later Death albums for support, where his preaching supposedly shines through.

Death are definetly Death Metal. i think the lyrics are the main factor for what genre a band along with what the band sounds like also. regurgitated guts, infernal death, baptized in blood are a few song titles off 'scream bloody gore' death's first album. If you think that they arent death metal. explain how they arent?

Death is death metal because of the rhythmic quality of the riffs, the harsh vocals, and the morbid/philosophical lyrical themes.

And it fucking sounds like death metal, so it must be!

As for Mercyful Fate, they're still arguable. Lyrically, there's no doubt; musically, it bears more resemblance to NWOBHM and the black metal nuances were attributed after the fact, so it depends on your perspective of chronology.

It's still nothing to do with re-classification. It's all to do with the ANUS guys being dicks. The fact that people have taken their shit seriously is a worry tbh. I had a guy come up to me at work last year and ask if I'd heard that Chuck was actually a Christian who died of AIDS. This was a guy who knows nothing of ANUS and barely reads the internet.
