I'ts the ole "a music genre has evolved so the old guard who started it all are not considered that genre anymore because it is more DEFINED now" bullcrap argument...
I've heard a small handfull of arguments from metalheads stating that Death are not death metal but more along the lines of Thrash. I agree to a point & I know people feel more strongly about it than I do. I've heard a lot of arguments. Go to MA or Anus to see what I'm talking about.
This poll was destined to fail because a "no" option was included. This poll was destined to fail because they were death metal at one point, so it's Yes and No
Must be all the pigeons pecking holes into it.
Stop getting your rationality in my absurd rant.Lyrics do not determine a genre of music, especially something so clearly defined as Death Metal.
I'm going by the OP's take on the Anus guys... not us who hang out here in UM... so that is to whom I directed my post to when i replied to the OP... now apologize profusely or I'll shave your Wolverine sideburns off or better yet I'll burn them off.. :Smokin:Actually, it's not. No-one here is debating that old Death isn't Death Metal. Look at the poll for fuck's sake.
Why is Mercyful Fate black metal and not heavy metal? is it because of the lyrical themes?
They're both.

Death is death metal because of the rhythmic quality of the riffs, the harsh vocals, and the morbid/philosophical lyrical themes.
And it fucking sounds like death metal, so it must be!
As for Mercyful Fate, they're still arguable. Lyrically, there's no doubt; musically, it bears more resemblance to NWOBHM and the black metal nuances were attributed after the fact, so it depends on your perspective of chronology.
Musically, they really don't sound like it. Maybe proto-black metal.Mercyful Fate were one of the Black Metal grandfathers, and the question often arises there. (For the record, they're Black Metal).
It's still nothing to do with re-classification. It's all to do with the ANUS guys being dicks. The fact that people have taken their shit seriously is a worry tbh. I had a guy come up to me at work last year and ask if I'd heard that Chuck was actually a Christian who died of AIDS. This was a guy who knows nothing of ANUS and barely reads the internet.
