Am I the only person who is really into the mellow Opeth (ie regular singing, like Damnation) and not the "swallow the microphone" annoying singing. They're just such an amazingly talented band I don't understand why they screw it up with crappy vocals. Just wondering if I'm alone?

my boyfriend got pretty scared one time when i played the moor for him because the guy sounds so mean

They are such a unique band, but sound like a 1000 others when they do the AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH voice:rock: It's cool once in awhile, but an entire album gives me a headache:goggly:

I like the section on Black Rose Immortal where he does it.

But Opeth is one of the few bands who isn't crap when they do harsh vocals. So I don't know. I like their music even during the harsh vocals but thats because it isn't so unoriginal as a lot of music tends to be.

Get out!!

I don't listen to Damnation at all. Åkerfeldt's growls are possibly the best around, I can't believe you'd say such a thing.

I don't like Burzum, but the vocals aren't shit. Neither are Immortal's. Shit vocals would include the likes of Meshuggah (spelling?) and Demilich. I'm tempted to say Devin Townsend as well, but I guess he's just more of an all-round shit cunt.

Burzums vocals are some of the worst around in regards to being able to understand what the fuck he is on about; but certainly his voclas suite his kind of music like few other bands do.

Opeths vocals i think are at the best when he mixes between growling and regular vocals

I *like* Burzum but I can't think of any other adjective to describe the vocals than 'shit' (lol since when was shit an adjective). And after watching that one Immortal video which wasn't Call of the Wintermoon where Abbath *looked* and *sounded* exactly like a frog and then he was making these frog-faces to top it off, I just can't take them seriously either (wait when could I).

Agree with Meshuggah and Demilich, strongly disagree with Devin :(

the mix of clarity, range and brutality are what make the growls of people like Åkerfeldt and Tägtgren so incredible. But for highly atmospheric BM like Burzum, Varg's vocals are perfect. His screams are awesome.

You cannot begin to understand how many lines you crossed inadvertently by making that post.

^ Yeah, you have to be fucking kidding.

Mikael's growls are some of the greatest, I love them. He does also have a great mellow singing voice.

And whats wrong with Devin Townsend??? I think hes good.

edit: nice sig byrne, Mortal Sin man.

Correct. I'm not a huge fan of harsh vocals but I do enjoy Opeths.

With that said, I care little for black metal and don't really understand the Burzum thing.

The mellow bits on their older albums are incredible but they are extra powerful because they are surrounded by heavy bits. Why can't people understand that. To me Damnation really sounds rather bland in comparison to most of their other stuff. I've always been more a fan of the folk-acoustic sound rather than the prog rock acoustic sound (which is the direction they took after BWP) anyway. So shrug...

And saying that a band sounds like a thousand other bands as soon as it has growls is just as stupid as saying a band sounds like a thousand other bands just because it has clean vocals (although that would infact be more valid because there are *a lot* more bands with clean vocals than bands with growls).
