Mellow Opeth

I'm not an Opeth fan. But I think that they would be a much better band if they didn't have those soft acoustic sections and gay lyrics about relationships.

Opeth would be NOWHERE as popular as they are now without the soft acoustic sections.

I know that everyone knows this. However, it must be said that the band don't do this out of an attempt to draw more people. Its music that Akerfeldt himself likes.

P.S. And yea it's kinda getting old. Ghost Reveries has about 30% of material on it that could be called "metal". If they keep going like this they should drop the growl gimmick and go full prog.

Yeah, I would say that the acoustic/clean vocal passages are the only reason Opeth are as popular as they are. And honestly, I think that the metal passages and acoustic passages often don't even fit together; it sounds like they are foreced together to create overly long songs. And I agree that Opeth should drop the metal passages with growling, since after all, they are playing metal less than half of the time. That way they would gain even more fans (non metalhead prog rock/alt rock fans), at the expense of losing a sizeable chunk of their metal fanbase.

I think the acoustic passages & solos are some of the best aspects of the band. I like when music is not exactly metal sounding still using raspy vocals. I don't think it sounds out of place.

If you listen to one of the new songs 'harlequin forest' growls do not kick in for about 4,5 minutes. The songs clean vocals are incredible to the point if mikael did not growl you would not care. I think the next album should be more in vain of harlequin forest. Mikaels vocals have also greatly improved since say orchid & morningrise. He no longer sounds force being able to really do some neat things with his voice. If opeth dropped the growling vocals I would not care. I can still listen to their back catalogue anyways so why should a band not do what they want.

I totally wouldn't mind if they dropped the growls, but I sure as hell would if they started chugging out a Damnation after another.

Harlequin Forest is an amazing example of Mike's clean vocals over heavier music and oh wow does it own.

I've found that most post-Nattens Ulver fans are idiots.

Why, because they are musically openminded?

Anyways, Mikael is a horrible vocalist in both the clean and harsh departments.
