Metal and Beyond

I guess I'm not a metalhead; I've spent most of the last month listening to indie rock, jpop and video game music. I'm on a hiatus from good taste, sorry.

I listen only to music that appeals to my ears. Metal does that. Punk, rap, pop, country don't. I'm open-minded on music, but I don't like everything. Only the music interests me, I don't care about any ideology or philosophy that some bands want to promote.

Same here, I'll listen to anything apart from pop, hip-hip and r&b. My musical tastes are very diverse, but metal is my true love and I'd say it constitutes about 90% of the music that I listen to.

I am not a "metalhead" at all. If anything, I am a fan of a very narrow group of educated people who play US-style technical BDM and take the piss out of everything that sucks in metal (grindcore communists, moaning, screaming and bitching black metallers, dragon-slaying melodic cunts in tight pants, guitar solo wankers, and many other). There are a few metal bands I like, but they usually incorporate other influences into their music.

you think slam bands are technical.

I listen almost exclusively to metal, and I have been doing that for the last fifteen years. I can respect other music genres, like blues, rock, pop-rock, jazz (although I can't stand it, personally), classical, and other genres that relies on instruments mostly. Talentless genres, like hip-hop, trance and pop, I can't stand.

Non-metal artists I like:

Nick Cave
Eric Clapton
Postgirobygget
Thomas Dybdahl

I listen mostly to metal and i am open to other styles but i would never consider to buy something non-metal.I like even some of techno but i would never waste my time on downloading or bying it.
After a couple glasses of beer every music sounds nice to the ears :)

Who are these "US-style technical BDM bands"?

Anyway, metal is easily my favorite genre by leaps and bounds (and I listen to it most of the time), but my taste is very diverse. In fact, despite metal being my favorite genre, my favorite album of all time is not metal. It's a Dredg album (progressive rock). Basically, I'm open to anything (including rap and techno, etc.) and basically love anything thats musical.

Hahahahah, whoah, my pretension meter just went the fuck off the scale.

Most of the non-metal stuff I listen to is not really popular or mainstream. I like a lot of classical music. My favorites are J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Edvard Grieg, and even some avant-garde composers such as Penderecki. Being a guitarist, I especially appreciate classical guitar music by the likes of Joaquin Rodrigo, Heitor Villa-Lobos, etc. I listen to a little bit of Spanish traditional music as well. My favorite non-metal artist at the moment is Dead Can Dance (Aion, The Serpent's Egg, and Spleen and Ideal in particular).

fucking Joy Division. depression to the max.

"...and I picked on the whims of a thousand or more
Still pursuing the path that's been buried for years
All the dead wood from jungles and cities on fire
Can't replace or relate, can't release or repair...
Take my hand as I show you what was and will be".

What "slam"? Nope. I think Internal Suffering, Dislimb, Sect of Execration, Cinerary, Malignancy etc. are technical. If you have any clue about playing a guitar, you will see why.

Well metal just really fits the mindset I've been in for the last three years or so, so I listen to it a lot. But I like a lot of other stuff. I love prog rock with innovative insturmentation and song structures. I'm pretty fond of ambient. I love female singer/songwriters, theres just certain feelings that only a womans voice can grasp. I also like a lot of acoustic folk, Indian, and other forms of traditional music. I like classical, but don't really know anything about it, but I can tell at some point in my life I'll get really into it.

I'm not gonna lie and say I am open minded. I am narrow minded. I only listen to metal, and I fucking HATE hip hop, mainstream rock, and pop punk. I don't even like hard rock, such as Led Zeppelin or Guns N Roses. I can tolerate some techno, though I would not go out and buy a techno CD. And as a musician, I can of course appreciate and respect the talent involved in composing and playing classical music and jazz, though I would not buy a classical or jazz CD.

Metal is my number one, always was, always will be, but i also like classic rock and recently got into some old school punk. But metal is, was and always will be numero uno in my book.

Well in my younger years I was kinda close minded about sampling music that had instruments other than guitar, bass, keyboards and drums but now I really enjoy how ethnic or symphony instruments can make a metal song dynamic.

Most of the metal that I seek now is the type described above or the epic, atmospheric type.

I listen to metal mostly, but I also like rock, jazz, swing, classical, techno, ska, and some punk. I try and stay open and listen to stuff like rap, hip-hop, pop, country, etc. from time to time, but I rarely find enjoyment in those genres.

Another question, would you prefer to listen to metal because it aesthetically pleases you or do the common ideologies and mindsets (often associated with the metal genre) appeals to you?

I look for spirit, imagination, innovation, well-executed concepts/thematic tightness, etc. I'm a pretentious artfag rather than a drunken loser, basically. ;)
