Metal >/< Classical? Metal Vs. Classical?

i am also a music student...and i have discovered that if a piece of music doesn't abide by every fucking rule....every "correct" chord progression...ya know (no paralel fifths, crossing parts, tritones....etc.)....then it is bad song-writing. but seriously, show your professor some opeth....none of that old duling guitar shit...*protects face from flying tomatoes*....let your professor listen to the drapery falls, or face of melinda, or the moor, or a fair judgment....see what he/she thinks....i am experiencing the same problem as you...

What if the chord progressions are broken as a means of experimentation? Like serialism or dissonance?

Actually, Might A's more correct than you realize. The Classical composers of yesteryear were the "Pop songwriters" of their time (the equivalent of today's Pop songwriters i.e. Maurice Starr, Max Martin, Eric Foster White, etc.), writing music that would have to pass muster with the ruling King, Emperor or the Church officials who were often the ones to commission the work in the first place. The aritsts did write their own pieces for their own enjoyment, but they usually found more commercial success when paid by the nation's hierarchy.

And, remember, just because it's not Classical or Metal doesn't mean that it's not a valid form of music.

Quite a unique trick considering Tool was already signed and released their first EP at least 3 years before Korn even got out of the box. I wouldn't call them rambly or incoherent. Their songs are quite well structured, unlike Korn, who essentially utilize their instruments to create weird noises and some chord progressions to base their tunes on. Tool is also one of the few bands to actually use odd time signatures on a regular basis without making the material sound choppy.

goddamn, the classical era didn't end with mozart you fuckin tools.

all you ass trolls need to listen to Chopin, Debussy, Rachmaninoff and Franz Liszt. True independant art came with the the fall of the monarchies and the rise of the middle class. The 1800's!!!! is the greatest era for music in all of history. The greatest works ever written came from this time. The most emotional, heartfelt music ever. THe music of today is shit compared to it...even metal. Beethoven started it..and it ended when Stravinksy died.

The churches held power of music during the renaissance, baroque and classical periods....they lost their control and music became more accessible to the masses. IT's not all "formulaic". When you have complete mastery in the craft of composing, then you'll grasp a tiny idea of exactly how creative and ingenius these men (and women) were.

Not saying MEtal is simple...or stupid by any means...I love it to death. But the classics shit all over it in every way. As classical music tends to do to every other genre.

Chopin is another great classical composer...im pretty sure that his music is a bit more recent too....but as far as music "breaking the rules" in classical music....im not sure on the history...but at certain times, breaking certain rules was like a commiting sin...having a tri-tone (augmented 4th) in your music was terrible...horrible...evil....

i hope i'm not too late. Maybe some Cynic or Atheist woudl do the trick, especially Cynic's "Textures." I know they're more jazz influenced than classical, but I think they'd have the musical maturity and development to make your prof. rethink things.

Yeah, Tool wouldn't be the best band to showcase the musicality of metal, as they have very little. They're more ambient and noise oriented. Not bad, but different, and definitely not something that will impress your professor.

I really don't think there's a way to convince that metal can equal or best the musicality of classical. It's kinda like convincing metal-heads that hip-hop is more emotional than metal...we all percieve things differently and usually it's the way we want to percieve them.

There are a few songs that I am going to reccomend you play to him. If you havnt got or heard these songs, try to locate them:

Gates of Babylon by Rainbow - This song has a very eerie feel to it in the beginning, and builds into a great chorus/verse pattern untill you get to the absolutley magical middle section. Some of the arrangments here, I think, are exactly what you are looking for. A mind blowing guitar solo from Ritchie Blackmore. It has a majestic feel to it. When I first read your post, this was the first song that jumped into my head. You need to hear it. Dio + Blackmore = :headbang:

Voices - Dream Theater. Just a stunning song that builds and builds. Perfect musicianship with awesome solo section/ending build up

In the Name of God - Dream Theater. This one is more metal that Voices so it might suit your needs better. Again, an awesome ending section with a crazy solo section in the middle.

People Passing By - Pain of Salvation. Again, a totally awesome middle/solo section that builds perfectly. Starts out with some funky bass lines, but just turns into an epic right before your ears. Has some classical influences, but no orchestra etc.

Dude, anonymousnick2001, you should really go back and reread my post. Septic Flesh/Chaostar is all you need to quiet your professor. In fact, Chaostar's first CD was Christos'(guitarist of Septic Flesh) senior thesis for his Composition degree from Oxford. Trust me.

bahahahahha entrails ripped from a virgins cunt by cannibal corpse, that'll shut him up!!
but seriously aggaloch or children of bodom are a good bet!! id go for something by them or possibly opeths a fair judgement... actually definately a fair judgement, soo many different elements and just so good

.....Please..... A lot of music today blows, but a lot of it is not shit compared to classical music. I'm tired of people who suck classical composers dicks all the time, it really gets annoying. That music is completely different in its formation than todays music. Beethoven didnt sit in a room with a bunch of friends, start playing piano, and see what people came up with. He played by the books, granted hes a musical genius, but tell me how someone who is deaf (and i know he wasnt deaf his whole life), comes up with such amazing music? If he cant fool and around with sounds he has to just follow the theory all the way through. I definitely like a fair amount of classical music, but alot of the time its just like... whatever to listen to. It doesnt move me. And if youre saying its more emotive, thats HORSESHIT. Beethoven's 9th doesnt do anything for me, but Stop Swimming by Porcupine Tree or Hope Leaves, they still some emotions. Its great music, obviously, but lets jump off the cock train, because its a little too long already.

if you brought in children of bodom, malmsteen or symphony x you would not only deserve to get in a fatal car accident, but you would be an ignorant piece of shit who deserves to get in a fatal car accident. use your heads you fucking morons. jesus christ.

bring in SIGH MOTHERFUCKER WOOOOO

Wow, i feel sorry for you man, that is the worst teacher in the history of music. Even the students in my music classes are more mentally developed than that.

Anyways i suppose a suggestion is completely redundant now...
