most solid metal album of 2007 so far?

I hated Fiction incidentally, it's easily DT's worst and the forerunner for my biggest disappointment of the year, along with Porcupine Tree's Fear of a Blank Planet.

I think you're right - it is DT's worst (or maybe tieing with Damage Done) but that doesn't mean it's not a great album. It's easily a contender for best of the year.

Can't wait for deathspell omega's release! But in terms of a really good release I've recently heard you should all check out drawn and quartered's "merciless hammer of lucifer" it's awesome!

i agree, drawn and quartered new album is pretty good.

Do you think it's depressing, when most of your favourite albums this year are by bands who have produced much better albums in the past?

You know, I can basically agree with you. I find that a lot of bands I once really cared for are now on the downside of their career...and even though the year is only half over, I don't see how it compares to the amount of great material that was released last year. Going back to what was said earlier, I had hoped that 2007 would be an even better year since more of my favourite bands were/are releasing albums this year. I can't say there's been one album that has truly impressed me.

My favourite so far this year is Mithras' Behind the Shadows Lie Madness. But I haven't heard that many albums yet.
Did you really think Fear of a Blank Planet was that bad? When I first got it, I put it on about once a day for a week, but haven't really gone back to it much since. Still, I remember not being outwardly disappointed. Not as good as Deadwing, but a solid 7/10 in my book. Too short, too few songs, and a bit lacking in emotional moments, but you can only dock so many points for what a band doesn't do vs. the music on the disc. Every other PT disc has 2 or 3 songs better than any on FoaBP, but it's not bad my any means.

That's a pretty reasonable assessment I think. But I didn't say it was a BAD album, I just said it was a big disappointment because I expected better. As I wrote in the non-metal forum, my biggest problem with the album is that it's generic prog rock. Porcupine Tree have, in my opinion, traditionally been at their weakest when trying to play heavy. 'Wedding Nails' was bad Dream Theater imitation, and 'Deadwing' was the weakest track on that album. And now they produce a whole album like that, of straightforward unmemorable rock.

No, this is not a case of 'poor album by DT's standards, but still a good album'. It's a case of 'great band, FUCKING SHIT album'. I can't listen to this at all. And I've loved every DT album so far.

I actually liked Folkfuck Folie a fair bit despite what others have said (i.e. MA forum).

Novembers Doom - The Novella Reservoir
Porcupine Tree -FOABP
Machine Head - The Blackening
Dark Tranquillity- Fiction
Thurisaz - Circadian Rhythm
Amorphis - The Silent Waters

Hellyeah- Hellyeah...wait, I meant:puke:

Reverend Bizarre - III: So Long Suckers
Alcest - Souvenirs d'un autre monde (Sure not metal, but whatever)
Mayhem - Ordo Ad Chao
Sigh - Hangman's Hymn
Pain of Salvation - Scarsick

Regarding Peste Noire...I like the album but I feel it doesn't compare to previous album and earlier material. I was quite disappointed with 'Folkfuck Folie' but it is still a good album compared to other black metal. I'd probably give it a 7.5 /10...

Also I was disappointed with the Sombre Chemin EP, after they had just released a brilliant album last year. Two of my favourite current French BM bands, hopefully they can both get back on track.

Dark Tranquillity's, Devin Townsend's, Despised Icon's, Job For A Cowboy's and Laethora's outputs impressed me greatly, but I have to give it up to Funeral's From These Wounds. An amazing album of melodic doom with male vocals that don't suck. Very atmospheric and each note is played with heart and soul, and no wankery crap. DT's Fiction comes in a very close second.
