Music with a similar sound to Opeth's "Damnation"?

Kenneth pwns you, newb! GTFO!

Anyone that uses the terms 'pwns' and 'newb' deserves to be castrated. How old are you? 12?

Sorry Kenneth I didn't see your suggestions there so I've deleted the accusation, however I'm still right re: Katatonia based upon the point I made above.

And the two before that! ;)

Yeah, both are essential purchases. the only reason I didn't suggest them was because they're less similar to Damnation. But great records. Definately an underrated band. I wish that they would re-record some of the Eternity material (Angelica, Far Away etc) now that Vinnie can actually sing, rather than just warble kinda off key.

why do coconuts have those three holes in them?

Yeah, any prog rock band. Damnation is one Opeth's worse albums though, you should try getting into a better one. I suggest Orchid or My Arms, Your Hearse.

damnation rules...its beautiful, i wish more bands would get into that sort of mellow, technical acoustic stuff. One of my favorite Opeth albums easy. lookin forward to another one like that in the future! good thread....except for all of page 2 :|

Ok, I might get flamed for this, but I was thinking about it. While there are no real surface similarities, if you want a record with softer songs that are expansive, interesting, progressive and melodic, where the musicianship is top-notch, there is a band feel, and there are floods of emotion, you could always try 'From The Choirgirl Hotel' by Tori Amos.

Trust me, you won't regret it :)

This is kind of the opposite question, but I'm in a really acousticy mood. What's some music that's similar to the acoustic parts of Opeth songs NOT on Damnation...i.e. their older acoustic sections? Classical, folk, instrumental, all that. Preferably not as part of metal albums. Thanks for any suggestions.
