Four songs, over 53 minutes of music. This simple consideration should make us approach the music of this rumanian trio with a certain curiosity. Negura Bunget are not an apprentice band, since before this "'N Crugu Bradului" had already released two albums and a mini album. But the chance Code666 offers will allow the band to spread its name furtherly reaching a wide audience. The music of the band is a rather evolved and original black metal that takes at full hands from the folk tradition of their country, but also from progressive solutions. In short, Negura Bunget offer (like themselves say) some "Transilvanian Spirituality's Music", that's not the usual pagan black metal at full throttle that tells about past warriors stories, but rather an original mixture of different influences, mixed and merged with care and a relevant artistical cleverness. Don't be afraid of over ten minutes long songs, because the high craft Negura Bunget put in their compositions allows no listener to get bored: the attention is kept alive by the continuous mood and tempo changes. The conceptual development is highly kept in consideration by the band, that with this work creates a sort of long concept: "'N Crugu Bradului" is a fantastic and spiritual trip across the conflict temporality - atemporality lived by a sheperd, himself symbol of the contrast between animal and man, between reality and fantasy, that stares at the wonders characterizing the four seasons, represented by the four "movements", almost it was a classical opera, the cd is divided into. Well, we're in front of a relevant opera, widely developed not only conceptually, but also musically. A bet, like Code666 like defining it, that seems abundantly won from the start.

Non vi fate distrarre da quella etichetta, "Transilvanian Black Metal", non sta a indicare i soliti gruppi che mettono una mignotta in copertina e scrivono due stronzate sui vampiri. I Negura Bunget provengono dalla Transilvania, e sono l'esempio di come solo chi ha una scintilla dentro può trasportare in musica le sensazioni che il vivere a contatto con un particolare paesaggio può dare. Ascoltate questo album e provate a chiudere gli occhi: vi troverete anche voi trasportati tra i Carpazi, tra paesaggi che lasciano a bocca aperta e passagg invalicabili che celano segreti di ogni tipo. Quasi un'ora per quattro pezzi, un concept album che racconta le quattro stagioni e il loro passare, con i relativi influssi sulla vita umana. Una scelta che si potrebbe anche etichettare come trita e ritrita, basti pensare ai Dream Theater, ma cerchiamo di non confondere l'acqua delle fogne con quella cristallina e fresa delle fonti. I Negura Bunget intraprendono il loro viaggio mistico utilizzando un sound tutto loro, fatto di raw black metal, ritmi folk, tastiere e strumenti fuori dagli schemi. Attenzione, niente pezzi ipersinfonici, orchestrali o simili, in questo caso questi strumenti sono utilizzati solo per esaltare alcuni momenti, non per ammorbare l'ascoltatore. La caratteristica principale della band rumena rimane il black metal grezzo ma suonato con una perizia spaventosa, e dando vita a un sfera caotica fatta di momenti eterei e momenti brutali che si rincorrono come due calamite impazzite. Sembra incredibile, eppure questo trio riesce a suonare con una tecnica spaventosa ma senza sembrare un band prog!! Forse questo aspetto è quello che maggiormente me li fa accostare a una grande band che ha questa stessa capacità, ovvero i norvegesi Forgotten Woods (ora Joyless), l'unica alla quale posso avvicinare in qualche modo i Negura Bunget, che però vivono decisamente di vita propria. Sono rimasto sbalordito, possedevo il loro precedente "Maiastru Sfetnic" che già presagiva a un certo tipo di sound, ma il risultato ottenuto con questo "'N Crugu Bradului" è decisamente oltre qualunque aspettativa terrena. Un acquisto obbligatorio, e se considerate che il disco sarà disponibile sotto forma di digibook cartonato fatto a mano dalla band e contenente una foglia dell'albero sotto il quale sono stati concepiti i pezzi, capite che si tratta di un vero e proprio oggetto da collezione. Ennesimo plauso alla Code666, capace di scommettere su band sconosciute ma di caratura incredibile. SALA MOLSKA!!!

Be a dir la verità quando questo cd mi è passato davanti la mia curiosità è esplosa vista la totale mancanza di associazioni nei riguardi del nome della band e dell’ album ( chiedendomi nel frattempo a quale cazzo di lingua appartenessero quelle parole ), anche perchè non immaginavo ancora che il prodotto che avevo fra le mani sarebbe stato capace di saturarmi sia a livello informativo, sia a livello visivo che, neanche a dirlo, a livello sonoro.Ebbene si, se avete ben capito questo album oltre a contenere le quattro tracce audio che compongono l’ album ( e non vi fate ingannare dall’ esiguo numero di tracce perché qui di musica c’ è ne quasi per un’ ora ) contiene anche dei files multimediali dove oltre alla presentazione dell’ album, con relativa descrizione e disamina, troviamo la storia del gruppo, le loro precedenti releases ( un demo, due full-lenght e un mini-cd), delle immagini, un esposizione del loro background spirituale e, udite udite, il (bonus) video di VAZDUH, song non contenuta nell’ album e registrata appositamente per la compilation BETTER UNDEAD THAN ALIVE 2002 della nostrana label CODE 666, con la quale i nostri vampiri rumeni hanno firmato un contratto per tre album. Arrivati a questo punto non mi rimane altro che confermare ciò a cui ho accennato sopra e cioè che le song dell’ album meritano un’ attenzione particolare visto la loro ottima strutturazione e originalità rivelata, appunto, dalla capacità di saper sapientemente mescolare le sonorità più care al black metal con elementi e strumentistica folk all’ interno di mistiche e trascendentali atmosfere che solo le deserte e fredde lande della Transilvania potevano ispirare….PURE TRANSILVANIAN BLACK METAL!!!

I Negura Bunget sono la prima band della Transilvania. La loro concezione del Black Metal è misantropica, spirituale, ancestrale. Il sound è demoniaco, differente, sicuramente influenzato dalla visione primordiale del Black Metal. Tutto il lavoro si sviluppa sulle leggende legate alla magica terra della Transilvania. A volte sembra veramente di essere in una dimensione diversa, per certi versi fantastica, immortale. Il Black Metal unisce tutto questo molto bene garantendo un salto temporale nel tempo immersi in nebbie eterne ed umide. Umide come la vostra fronte dopo aver affrontato questo viaggio in un universo mentale semplicemente unico. I N.B. hanno un’identità ed una completezza surreali. (M.F.)

Een Metal band uit Roemenië. Soms komen de grootste verrassingen uit landen waarvan je het niet verwacht. Negura Bunget is wat mij betreft al de grote verrassing op Black Metal gebied van de laatste tijd. ''N Crugy Bradului' is een Black Metal conceptalbum gebaseerd op de Transylvaanse spiritualiteit.

De band hanteert op het album hetzelfde principe als Opeth: lange uitgesponnen nummers die geen moment vervelen. Op"'N Crugu Bradului" staan slechts vier nummers maar per stuk duren ze allen langer dan 10 minuten. Deze nummers (praktisch getiteld I, II, III, IV) zijn gerelateerd aan het magische getal vier dat staat voor vier seizoenen, vier elementen enzovoort. Tevens is dit het vierde album van deze Roemenen. Voorgaande platen zijn mij helaas onbekend maar dit meesterwerk geeft voldoende reden om een speurtocht te starten.

Waar Opeth sinds de laatste cd's een stuk toegankelijker geworden is begeeft Negura Bunget zich nog meer in obscure sferen en gebruikt ook andere invloeden. Zo hoor je in bepaalde stukken (aan het begin van II) de onheilspellende klanken van Neurosis terug en aan de andere kant de melodie van Moonspell ten tijde van 'Irreligious'. Ook schuwt de band het gebruik van traditionele instrumenten als panfluit en xylofoon niet waardoor ze een erg authentiek en eigen geluid creëert. Mede dankzij deze creativiteit weten de nummers tot het eind te boeien. Voor de rest klinkt het album erg Metal en is Black Metal een veel te beperkt label voor Negura Bunget.

De band bestaat uit Hupogrammes Disciple's (gitaar, zang, keyboards en panfluit), Sol Faur Spurcatu (gitaar) en Negru (drums, percussie en xylofoon).

Ja, wat moet je hier verder nog over zeggen? Deze plaat zal zeker hoog in mijn jaarlijst voor 2003 eindigen.

A quite unusual album occupies my CD player presently. Already excited by effusive advance notices and also because of the information I got from the official band page (which is really great), I could hardly wait to get the brand new and third album of NEGURA BUNGET into my fingers. I have to concede, code666 really has the right touch for unusual music. By the way … this CD gets delivered with a hand made deluxe card box.
Well, their info sheet already brims over with excessive descriptions and comparisons. But eventually it is just a replay of the history, information and ideology the band presents on their website. There is the speech of a journey into the world and spirituality of Transylvanian ancestors, of Romanian myths, of universal transcendence, blood and immortality, of legends and honor and the principle of four. In a musical respect the band gets easily labeled as Primitive Transylvanian Metal. But nothing here is primitive at all!
’N crugu bradului is basically a pure and harsh Black Metal album. And it is an concept album based on the natural foundation of the universe, the principle of the four. ’N crugu bradului is reflecting this principle (unfortunately I don’t know the meaning of the album title) which consists of the 4 seasons, 4 cardinal points, 4 elements, the 4 phases of the moon … etc. Unfortunately there are no lyrics to this promo and on the official band page the lyrics are exclusively in Romanian. So I can hardly comprehend the concept in its entirety. I don’t know which of these aspects of the four flow in and which not. Which cardinal point is belonging to which season and which element? Or do they all exist independently of each other and there is just a transcendent connection? I’m not familiar with this kind of approach, religion or ideology. So readers of this review may teach me
Consequently the album is built up in four phases, seasons or chapters (each of it with 12 to 15 minutes). Every chapter is one continuous song with lots of different elements.
Chapter I starts out dark with jingly and clanking tunes, spreading icy coldness and rawness with schizophrenic background singing. Psychotic guitar tunes set in to merge into a truly Black Metal thunderstorm. This music is well-fitting to the clanking cold of the winter. In spite of discreetly utilized high speed passages the main pace is midtempo and the band attaches importance to melodic tensions. Some riffs and song structures get repeated not to loose the red thread. The keyboards set skillfully counterpoints while staying in the background but spread a hypnotic and intense atmosphere. Concerning the guitars you may associate them subliminally with Avantgarde bands like Arcturus. The singing ranges in typical Black Metal fields. The whole chapter creates such a coldness …
Chapter II starts out extremely slow and lugging, almost doomy, just to try to awake. But always again the rhythm falls back into this slow and doomy sound, just to ascend from lethargy, to go over in gentle springlike and energetic acoustic parts. The singing changes to spoken words and then to clean vocals. Admittedly these ones need getting used to. It sounds dramatically, agonizing and martyred, even fading to abysmal screams which remind me of the screams on Elend albums. It fits perfectly to the concept but you need to get used to it. The pure Black Metal core hasn’t changed that much though. Just the acoustic parts are flowing in always again.
Chapter III and IV underlie the same structure but now it is really hard to comprehend the musically conceptual sophistications. There are also not these significant elements anymore like the acoustic parts or clean singing. The chapters are mainly stamped by pure Black Metal with some sound samples and some changes. But chapter IV offers pretty spacy sound samples and an extensive intro and outro.

All things considered NEGURA BUNGET offers with ’N crugu bradului an awesome album and Black Metal in a special way. Icy cold, mystical, schizophrenic, melancholic, hypnotic, even possessed. The spirituality of Transylvanian is almost manifest. The concept is complex and hard to realize. But NEGURA BUNGET have done a good job. And with every new spin you will hear new niceties and changes albeit you can’t comprehend them. An unusual but amazing masterpiece!

Was immer auch der im Info vielzitierte „transilvanische Spirit“ sein mag, Negura Bunget zählen sicherlich zu den musikalisch interessantesten Vertretern der Black Metal-Zunft, denn die Rumänen besitzen den Mut neue musikalische Wege in einem Genre zu beschreiten, das in seiner Dogmatisierung in Sachen musikalischen Ausdrucks und mangelnder Fan-Akzeptanz für neue Einflüsse über lange Zeit zu ersticken drohte. Die Vermengung mystisch kalten Black Metals mit Einflüssen der transilvanischen Folklore lässt jedenfalls einen künstlerischen Ausdruck entstehen, der in dieser Form einmalig ist und dem unvoreingenommenen Zuhörer allen Respekt nicht nur für die spielerische Leistung der Band abnötigt, sondern auch für den Mut Genregrenzen zu überschreiten. Das mag in manchen Passagen der vier überlangen Tracks noch gewöhnungsbedürftig und schwer verdaulich klingen, doch in seiner Gesamtheit überzeugt „‘N Crugu Bradlui“ durch seine stoische Konsequenz und Diversität. Wer sich Neuem gegenüber aufgeschlossen zeigt, der sollte Negura Bungets mittlerweile viertem Album die ihm gebührende Aufmerksamkeit schenken. Er wird es nicht bereuen.

It's been a while when I heard from NEGURA BUNGET, I remember hearing them years ago and to my pleasant surprise I see they haven't been lazy asses. For as far as I know I liked their old material but it is so damn hard to get. Well with this one they will be available almost everywere I guess, and that's a good thing. They're very inventive and original in sound and composition, the sound is thick and massive though the feeling stays harsh and cold. Four songs and almost an hour runningtime, and they aren't boring for one minute. It's all rather complex in views of riffing and arrangements but it's not annoying, the songs are still songs but just get a load of that double guitarwork, the excellent woven basslines and the diversity in drum parts. Listening to this is like hearing a story without understanding the words but experiencing the feeling of how it's told. This is how pagn black should sound I think, although played with electric instruments you tend to forget that and get carried away by the unity of sounds and feelings who are often agressive but all in function of the concept. There's also a very nice bonus to this release, you get apart from the music also a clip of a song that will be on a compilation, a lot of additional band information that's very nicely done. Also a limited number of copies are handmade by the members of NEGURA BUNGET .

Questo è uno degli album più inusuali che mi sia mai capitato di ascoltare. Basti sapere che i Negura Bunget suonano, a detta loro, Primitive Transilvanian Metal e che il cd in questione è composto da quattro lunghissime tracce della durata media di 13 minuti! Cosa rappresenti per il gruppo rumeno questo fantomatico Primitive Metal non ci è dato di conoscerlo neanche ascoltando l'intero lavoro: per snervare chi odia le categorizzazioni musicali potrei definire i Negura Bunget come un gruppo Black Prog. Black perchè la voce in screaming e i semplici riff bicordi plettrati velocissimi e accompagnati da un tappeto di minimali keys tradiscono la passione del gruppo per la Norvegia (anche se in questo caso mi tocca ammettere che non si tratta di copiatura, nè di ispirazione... il sound conclusivo è nettamente diverso da qualsiasi band black metal mai apparsa sulla scena). Prog perchè le strutture delle canzoni si evolvono in un modo imprevedibile e sempre molto vario, grazie ad un gran numero di cambi di tempo ed evoluzioni strumentistiche. Vorrei fare un applauso al managemente della grandissima etichetta Code666, che ancora una volta è riuscita ad osare, rischiando una ardua scommessa con questo gruppo assolutamente non facile da assimilare e da digerire. I pezzi, come già detto, sono molto lunghi e incentrati più o meno sugli stessi elementi, cosa che avrebbe anche potuto guidare una scelta di lasciare il lavoro composto da un'unica traccia, invece che dividere arbitrariamente in quattro punti. Questo però ci avrebbe impedito di fare facilmente "skip" col lettore cd per raggiungere i molti riff degni di nota che verrebbe voglia di riascoltare all'infinito tanto sono incisivi e ben suonati. Purtroppo questo non avviene sempre, e accanto ad alcune sezioni evocative ed epiche della musica dei Negura Bunget si affiancano minuti e minuti di riff troppo simili, poco ispirati, e anche piuttosto casuali nel susseguirsi e nell'inseguirsi tra loro. C'è da dire che, data la natura sperimentale dell'intero lavoro, è naturale una certa distensione dei pezzi e una dilatazione della musica, cosa che non è assolutamente sempre negativa. Mi ha colpito molto l'anima folkloristica della loro musica, la capacità di inserire elementi etnici e tradizionali senza sbatterli in bella vista, come avviene all'inizio della prima traccia... finalmente un'intro degna di nota, che si fa sentire di nuovo ad ogni ascolto del cd, oltre ad essere misteriosa e sufficientemente intrigante. Insomma, se da molti punti di vista "'N Crugu Bradului" mi ha convinto, su altri c'è ancora qualcosa da levigare e sistemare, ma nel complesso il lavoro supera pienamente la sufficienza, anche contando il coraggio con cui la Code666 ci ha permesso di ascoltare una musica così originale e poco commerciale

L'attenta Code666 apre questo 2003, puntando su un gruppo sconosciuto al grande pubblico, i Negura Bunget, formazione proveniente dall'Est europeo, zona il cui apporto all'interno della scena estrema si sta facendo sempre più deciso.
Le tracce di "'N Crugu Bradului" si discontano da quelle dei precedenti lavori e da quella presentata sulla recente compilation "Better Undead Than Alive", in virtù di una maggiore complessità strutturale, che permette ai pezzi di assestarsi sulla durata media di undici minuti.<br>
L'intero lavoro, infatti, è composto da soli quattro brani e ciò - nonostante alcune ovvie problematiche - permette di aumentare l'omogeneità del full, rafforzata inoltre da un songwriting qualitativamente equilibrato.<br>
La proposta dei rumeni, sin dalla prima traccia, si presenta come una rielaborazione - assolutamente personale - di un stile che ha come punto di riferimento i classici norvegesi dei primi '90, ma anche molte formazioni dell'Est già note, e che alterna sanguigni mid-tempos ad accellerazioni brutali ed improvvise.<br>
Ricopre un ruolo non secondario la componente ambientale che, oltre a fungere da collante fra i vari pezzi, ne rafforza le atmosfere, accentuando una vena folkoristica volutamente evidenziata dai nostri.<br>
Quello conclusivo potrebbe essere un brano rappresentativo dell'intero album: una lunga intro ambient fa da apripista ad una piacevole alternanza di tempi, che ci permette di apprezzare l'approccio grezzo - ma ragionato - dei nostri, ed un cantato orgogliosamente espresso in lingua madre.<br>
E' necessario mettere in evidenza lo splendido packaging che racchiude questo lavoro; è sempre un immenso piacere poter apprezzare un artwork così curato: i toni del verde sormontano una fotografia che esalta i paesaggi rumeni, rafforzando un concept che unisce musica e immagine e che viene pepretato anche in Internet, attraverso un sito di buon livello, che invito tutti a visitare.<br>
Per supportare la durata di un full con l'ausilio di soli quattro pezzi, è necessario possedere una capacità espositiva di rilievo; i nostri dimostrano - in questo senso - di aver già raggiunto una discreta maturità e di sapere amalgamare le tracce attraverso l'intelligente utilizzo di una elettronica ambientale non scontata.

Negura Bunget est considéré comme la première formation de black metal issue de la région de transilvanie. Et, à l'instar de Melechesh pour la musique israëlienne, le groupe s'est fixé pour objectif d'apporter à l'auditeur un échantillon de "spiritualité transilvanienne" au travers de sa musique. Vaste programme ! Ce nouveau disque des roumains constitue leur troisième véritable album et propose 4 bons titres dépassant tous allègrement les 12 minutes. Au delà de la qualité évidente des compositions, toujours surprenantes et jamais ennuyeuses, ce qui frappe le plus est cette identité, ce son unique, glauque et terne qu'a développé le groupe. L'introduction de bribes de musique traditionnelle roumaine est faite de façon intelligente, sans excès, bref juste ce qu'il faut pour donner à ce black atmosphérique un petit goût différent bien appréciable. Un des domaines où Negura Bunget excelle est sans contestation possible celui des ambiances froides et inquiétantes. Ecoutez "IIII", le dernier titre de l'album et vous m'en direz des nouvelles : une longue et ténébreuse intro, vaporeuse à souhait, sur laquelle viennent s'échouer des plaintes lugubres tout droit sorties du fin fond de la nuit la plus noire... Du grand art ! Pour son premier album chez Code666, on peu dire que les roumains n'ont pas fait les choses à moitié et ce surprenant "'n crugu bradului" devrait ravir les amateurs de black metal à ambiances. 4 tracks. If I’m not mistaken, we could speak 4 seasons as well. Not that it matters to me, as I don’t think seasons at all when I listen to the new album from Negura Bunget. I think black metal in a form which attracts me a lot. We first got it from Burzum. Later the tide changed direction, and we had the black metal boom in the mid 80’s. Now, that people seem to play the consumer’s role in full, I try to head for another direction. I go back in time, but still forward. For, with bands such as Shining and now Negura Bunget the simple black metal is at its peak.
This album has a hypnotic effect on me. If a section lasts for 2 or 10 minutes doesn’t matter, as the whole and the atmosphere are utterly important. Dark, yet mighty black metal creates an atmosphere which is hard to describe. In a way it’s like being under the surface of the ocean. And I try to get to the surface to breathe, but I can’t. After a while I start to enjoy the choking feeling and I assimilate to the situation as I don’t fight against it but rather turn into something else. And time doesn’t exist anymore, just the environment, the dark and eerie atmosphere.
I would say Negura Bunget have created a whole album. It’s an album you have to listen to from beginning to end. It’s an album that’ll grow on you, despite the lack of smart effects and numerous layers with different sounds. It simply a simple album from the beginning to the end, an album that could do something to you and your black metal heart, cold as it is.

Ho già ampiamente tessuto le lodi della Code666 in occasione della freschissima release di “Better undead than alive”, doppio cd autocelebrativo appena sfornato della label di Imola. Potete quindi immaginare l’ entusiasmo con cui mi sono avvicinata al promo dei nuovi arrivati in casa Code666. Primo gruppo black metal proveniente dalla Transilvania, i Negura Bunget sono devotamente dediti a promuovere la spiritualità originaria della propria terra. Dunque, primo approccio decisamente intrigante: artwork curatissimo (un altro dei marchi di fabbrica dell’etichetta) e confezionato in un box cartonato fatto a mano, attitudine tellurica, primitiva, e un concept affascinante, profondamente intriso di mitologia e spiritualità rumena (sì: è lì che si trova la Transilvania, nei Carpazi…). Ma, dando un’occhiata alla tracklist sorgono le prime perplessità: quattro canzoni per 54 minuti di durata…nemmeno gli Opeth sono mai arrivati a tanto! Ma, armata di coraggio, inizio il mio viaggio nel mondo mitico di “’N crugu bradului”… Stando ai suggerimenti della bio, mi aspettavo di sentire un disco Black metal dalle forti influenze folk, invece la proposta musicale dei Negura Bunget è decisamente poco classificabile. Si potrebbe forse accostarla al filone viking-black metal norvegese: difatti, l’atmosfera evocata dai brani mi ha ricordato molto da vicino gli Enslaved di "Eld", e anche di "Blodhemn" … ma così non pretendo certo di aver reso l’idea. In primo piano emerge un lavoro chitarristico solido e corposo, a tratti fantasioso, accompagnato da un drumming vigoroso e preciso, e da screaming vocals feroci, che a volte lasciano spazio a recitazioni in lingua madre. Se dopo il primo ascolto avevo concluso che ‘N Crugu Bradului fosse un disco difficile, e necessitasse ripetuti ascolti per essere capito, adesso però, dopo una full immersion prolungata e ininterrotta, devo concludere che è un lavoro a dir poco ostico. I Negura Bunget hanno fatto il passo più lungo della gamba, confezionando un prodotto decisamente pretenzioso, pesante, pressochè inassimilabile. Confesso che è stata una fatica riuscire ad ascoltare tutte d’un fiato le quattro lunghe, lunghissime songs: arduo è stato il tener viva l’attenzione per l’intera durata del disco. I Negura Bunget si sono lasciati un po’ troppo prendere la mano, finendo per sfornare un disco dispersivo, prolisso, molto poco “commerciale” (nel senso di “commerciabile”), fatto di songs interminabili, che iniziano in un modo e finiscono -13 minuti dopo- in tutt’altro, ignorando la forma canzone. Le idee ci sono, le capacità tecniche per realizzarle pure, ma sono disseminate, disperse e diluite nel magma fluido dell’intero album: basterebbe concentrarle e riassumerle in composizioni più compatte, coerenti, coese…e il discorso sarebbe ben diverso. Sia chiaro: lungi da me difendere il metal commerciale e le canzonette usa e getta, ma non posso neppure negare che nella forma attuale, la proposta musicale dei Negura Bunget risulta quasi indigeribile. Coraggiosa la Code666 lo è sempre stata, e per questo l’ho stimata fin dall’inizio; avanguardistica, elitaria, per pochi, ma stavolta proprio per pochissimi.

Finally something fresh in the dying black metal scene of nowadays. Negurã Bunget is the best-known Romanian Black Metal band, who since their 97 debut ‘Zîrnindu-s㒠bring forth its particular black metal, that incorporate elements of Archaic Romanian folk culture. Today the band consists of three members, Hupogrammos Disciple's, Negru and Sol Faur Spurcatu, and their lyrics are written exclusively in their native language. Lyrically the album is a concept on the four seasons and consists of four long songs, simply called respectively ‘I’, ‘II’, ‘III’, ‘IV’, that rum for more than 54 minutes on the whole. The sound is harsh and discordant, with mid-paced tempo that frequently changes in fast-paced rhythms, but the riffs are unusual, eerie and psychedelic. By the music Negura Bunget show through the spirituality of Transylvania, the mystic land which is surrounded by the Carpathians. Morevoer the cd is enriched by an interesting and complete multimedia section (like every Code666 release lately got) with many infos about the band and its background, the lyrics and especially with a wonderful video of an unreleased song: ‘Vazduh’. It was shot in the Transilvanian mountains and it’s amazing. Worth to mention is the package, an handmade carton-box made by the band itself and that every package contains a leaf taken from the tree below which the band has composed the album! Summing up, this is how black metal should be: cold, archaic and mysterious. One of the most genuine and spiritual black metal release of the last years that catch the true essence of this genre.

Dunkle, endlose Wälder, junge zornige Männer und die Konfrontation mit dem Christentum - mehr braucht der Black Metal nicht als Nahrungsgrundlage. Logischerweise sollte es also nicht nur in Skandinavien Bands dieses Genres geben, sondern auch in den von der westlichen Zivilisation nur zart gestreiften wilden Balkanländern. So kriechen denn NEGURA BUNGET, eingehüllt in weite Schafsfellmäntel aus der Dunkelheit der transsylvanischen Nächte an das Licht der Öffentlichkeit.

Mit "N'Crugu Bradului" veröffentlichen die drei Rumänen ihr erstes Album europaweit, obwohl sie schon den einen oder anderen Tonträger vorweisen können. Gelungen ist das durch die Zusammenarbeit mit dem italienischen Label Code666, von dem sicher noch einiges im Zusammenhang mit innovativem Metal zu hören sein wird. Die vier Stücke der Platte sind einfach durchnummeriert und alle kurz vor der Grenze zum 15-Minuten-Epos. Inhaltlich geht es um den Wechsel der Jahreszeiten und um die Entdeckung "transsylvanischer Spirualität", was immer das auch sein mag.

Titel 1 bietet die für diese Musikart typischen singend-sägenden Gitarren, z.T. höllisch schnelle Drums und einen kreischenden Vokalkünstler, der zwar sicher rumänisch singt, aber auch in tschechisch, norwegisch oder deutsch intonieren könnte - zu verstehen ist der Text soundso nicht.
Stück zwei kommt wesentlich abwechslungsreicher daher: häufige Tempowechsel, akustische Gitarren, klarer Gesang und weite Keyboardflächen lockern das Klangbild auf. Insgesamt ergibt sich ein fast folkloristischer Eindruck, der sich gegen Ende des Stückes jedoch wieder im Gemetzel verliert.
Bei Track 3 treten die Keyboards etwas mehr in den Vordergrund und im Mittelteil ist gar eine Panflöte zu hören, an der Grundaussage: "It's Black Metal, Baby!" ändert das aber nichts.
Das abschließende Liedlein braucht ganze vier Minuten, um in die Gänge zu kommen, bildet letztendlich doch in Punkto Atmosphäre und Vampirfaktor einen heroischen Abschluss des vorliegenden Werkes.

Wer Bands wie Dimmu Borgir oder Cradle Of Filth mag und nicht unbedingt auf deren Pathos angewiesen ist, der macht mit dem Rumänenmetal nichts falsch. Im Gegenteil: In ein paar Jahren haben NEGURA BUNGET den genannten Bands vielleicht sogar den Rang abgelaufen, da sie wesentlich ehrlicher daherkommen. Nicht zu vergessen: Der Vampirfaktor! Varg Vikernes wird's mit Schrecken hören. Aus der Traum vom Endsieg der Wikinger…

PS: Für den Endverbraucher bleibt zu hoffen, dass die CD mit den gleichen tollen Gadgets ausgeliefert wird, wie die zu Promozwecken (Bilder, ein Video, Historie etc.)

De sa région d'origine, la Transylvanie (Roumanie), terre mystique, source d'inspiration intarissable dans les écrits Black-metal orientés vampirisme, Negura Bunget se présente à nous en empereur de l'extrême(la je commence à partir dans mes délires). Ma fois c'est la première fois que je reçois une réalisation en provenance de ce lieu mystérieux et étrange qu'est la Transylvanie. 'N Crugu Braduili" m'est apparu comme une révélation dès les premières notes : Negura Bunget a tout compris du savoir Black-metal. A leur concept retraçant des mythes spirituels Roumain sur l'immortalité, ils ont insufflé une dose de black metal agressif, mélodiques, passages folk...des guitares complètement tordues, et novatrices dans la forme. Un vent ancestral souffle sur ces 4 morceaux aux ambiances nostalgiques. Negura Bunget est l'énorme découverte de ce débute d'année 2003. Un grand nom du Black-metal est né.

L'attenta Code666 apre questo 2003, puntando su un gruppo sconosciuto al grande pubblico, i Negura Bunget, formazione proveniente dall'Est europeo, zona il cui apporto all'interno della scena estrema si sta facendo sempre più deciso.
Le tracce di "'N Crugu Bradului" si discontano da quelle dei precedenti lavori e da quella presentata sulla recente compilation "Better Undead Than Alive", in virtù di una maggiore complessità strutturale, che permette ai pezzi di assestarsi sulla durata media di undici minuti.<br>
L'intero lavoro, infatti, è composto da soli quattro brani e ciò - nonostante alcune ovvie problematiche - permette di aumentare l'omogeneità del full, rafforzata inoltre da un songwriting qualitativamente equilibrato.<br>
La proposta dei rumeni, sin dalla prima traccia, si presenta come una rielaborazione - assolutamente personale - di un stile che ha come punto di riferimento i classici norvegesi dei primi '90, ma anche molte formazioni dell'Est già note, e che alterna sanguigni mid-tempos ad accellerazioni brutali ed improvvise.<br>
Ricopre un ruolo non secondario la componente ambientale che, oltre a fungere da collante fra i vari pezzi, ne rafforza le atmosfere, accentuando una vena folkoristica volutamente evidenziata dai nostri.<br>
Quello conclusivo potrebbe essere un brano rappresentativo dell'intero album: una lunga intro ambient fa da apripista ad una piacevole alternanza di tempi, che ci permette di apprezzare l'approccio grezzo - ma ragionato - dei nostri, ed un cantato orgogliosamente espresso in lingua madre.<br>
E' necessario mettere in evidenza lo splendido packaging che racchiude questo lavoro; è sempre un immenso piacere poter apprezzare un artwork così curato: i toni del verde sormontano una fotografia che esalta i paesaggi rumeni, rafforzando un concept che unisce musica e immagine e che viene pepretato anche in Internet, attraverso un sito di buon livello, che invito tutti a visitare.<br>
Per supportare la durata di un full con l'ausilio di soli quattro pezzi, è necessario possedere una capacità espositiva di rilievo; i nostri dimostrano - in questo senso - di aver già raggiunto una discreta maturità e di sapere amalgamare le tracce attraverso l'intelligente utilizzo di una elettronica ambientale non scontata.

I transilvani Negura Bunget, fieri delle loro radici, si definiscono Transilvanian Black Metal, appunto. Con “ ’N Crugu Bradului” giungono alla loro quarta releases ufficiale dopo un mini e due full lenght. Il concept che questi ragazzi cercano di portare avanti si basa completamente sulla cosiddetta spiritualità transilvana, spiritualità che ha la sua fonte primaria d’ispirazione nella natura e nella consapevolezza di appartenere ad un popolo fiero e selvaggio (i Daci), sconfitto solo dalle possenti legioni dell’impero romano. Tralasciando la storia possiamo dire che queste passioni influenzano abbondantemente e in maniera assolutamente positiva le quattro suites di cui è formato questo disco. Avete capito bene, il disco in questione è formato da sole quattro tracce anche se la durata delle composizioni varia dai 12 ai 15 minuti. Il black metal di partenza rimanda sovente agli Emperor di “In The Nightside Eclipse” e sfido chiunque a considerarlo un punto negativo. Ma i Negura Bunget hanno una forte personalità, che gli permette di arricchire la loro musica con suggestive ambientazioni folk (con tanto di strumenti tradizionali) dalla straordinaria bellezza e capaci di creare atmosfere da brividi che talvolta sfiorano lidi quasi ambient. Le atmosfere sono il punto forte di questo disco, sembra quasi di trovarsi ora nella placida spiritualità delle foreste che ricoprono i Carpazi, ora in una radura di una notte di plenilunio circondati da lupi che ululano nella bruma oppure ancora in una tormenta di neve con tanto di vento che sibila e soffia con vigore. Il suono di una terra di rara bellezza e suggestione, sospesa ai confini tra due mondi ci viene presentato e rappresentato, è proprio il caso di dirlo, anche nella ricchissima traccia multimediale la quale è strutturata quasi come un website. Infatti contiene di tutto e di più, anche il video di “Vazduh” registrato sulle montagne transilvane e già presente sulla compilation “Better Undead Than Alive”.
Devo ammettere che la durata delle composizioni pur non risultando di per se un difetto però può rendere abbastanza impegnativo l’ascolto. Ogni song è un trip e sembra quasi composta con uno spirito che oserei definire “psichedelico”. Non posso fare altro che promuovere ed appoggiare la proposta di questi menestrelli transilvani. Un ultima chicca è la confezione con la quale vi verrà venduto questo disco, un carton-box realizzato a mano dalla band nel quale troverete anche una vera foglia di un albero della foresta transilvana sotto il quale i nostri hanno composto l’album. Decisamente affascinante.

Negura Bunget waren die allererste Black Metal-Horde, welche je aus dem sagenumwobenen Transsylvanien kam. Allein dieser Fakt zeitigte und rechtfertigte schon einiges an Interesse. Kein Wunder, daß alle ihre Songs enormen „Biss“ haben. Schon das überzeugende ´96er Debütalbum „Zirnindu-Sa“ ließ mich damals hell aufhorchen ob des ebenso eigenwillig akzentuierten wie mit ungewöhnlicher Innovativmelodik aufkreuzenden Verachtungssounds dieser blutrünstigen Rumänenbestien. Pur, rauh, primitiv, dreckig, aber auch stellenweise überaus hymnisch und hingebungsvoll ergeben, das sind nach wie vor die immens reizvollen Klangattribute dieser neuerdings als Abscheutrio agierenden Vampirnachkommen. Ihre dritte Albumverführung „`N Crugu Bradului“ nun ist ein für eine Black Metal-Scheibe dieser hier betont ursprünglich orientierten Genrekategorie immens komplexes Werk geworden. Es zeigt die drei untoten Transsylvanier als heimat- und geschichtsbewußte Konzeptschwarzmetaller, welche rumänisch spirituelle Mythen mit klassischen Black Metal-Thematiken zu einer verführerischen und fatalen Essenz des Bösen vermengen. Doch nicht nur lyrisch, sondern auch musikalisch verarbeiten Negura Bunget die weit zurückliegenden Ursprünge Transsylvaniens auf ihrem aktuellen Manifest der Dunkelheit – so bringen sie auf landestypisch-traditionellen Instrumenten dargebrachte uralte rumänische Folk-Parts in ihre unheilvoll beschwörenden Mystiklieder ein. Die so auf diesem textlich zudem sehr naturverbundenem Opus der Boshaftigkeit entstandene eiskalte Musikmischung aus schockfrostig anmutender Gitarrenarbeit, flirrenden Melodien, variablem Kreisch/Geifer/Keifgesang und den erwähnten traditionellen Acoustics ist wie schon die Vorgängerwerke von gleichfalls faszinierender wie grenzen- und zeitloser Anziehungskraft.

What I am wondering is why do these people give them less-than-perfect marks if all they do in the review is praise them? If you're going to give an album something less than 10, at least include the reason why you're doing so.

That's right. No song titles, baby. Only from a band that comes from Transylvania will you get this primitive attitude. Hell, I'm surprised there is music on the album. It's a primitive attitude that after dealing with, you would expect them to back it up-and they do. Well worth a listen for anyone into meaningful Black Metal. Full of life and history, this CD is one to soak yourself into again and again. More of an audio book then just a CD listening-it's a pleasure. It is grim and atmospheric but so full of colour at the same time, a wonderful experience, yet so alone. Completely recommended. (Online January 30, 2003)
