In the beginning of the song I thought it was a garage band just learning a Metallica song, with different band members playing different Metallica songs at the same time, yet, all at the wrong tempo. Soooooo,yeah.........yep.........*cough* *crickets*

I don't get why everyone is shitting their pants over the structure or lack thereof. AJFA, AND Puppets, BOTH have songs that drag on and have random assed riffs everywhere. I see no difference with this song. They've always been about kinda sloppy songwriting, at least till Bob Cock came into the mix. I suppose when 'Tallica said they were going back to the Justice/Puppets era I guess they were telling the truth. But yes LOL at the "solos." I'll give em a B for effort. One and a half gold stars.

The hunger is gone I guess...when you go from living in a uhaul/van to being a millionaire...the passion is lost.
Does this guy look like he can write a great album? ....maybe 20 years ago.

I'm just a little surprised at how many people are making comments about the length of the song. Ummmm, we're on Sneap's forum, not Staind's forum ..

Point being that its METAL ... one of the great things about it is you don't have to give a fuck about song length unless that is what you're listening for. Don't think there were too many short songs on "Justice" and even "Puppets" had I think like 3 tunes that hit the 8 minute mark. This is a board that almost everyone can agree that they like Opeth right? I think if you feel the song is too long it might be more of a case of you just not liking the song itself, or maybe the structure, or maybe some people have just gotten accustomed to the Metallica of the last 15 years

I think anybody can find something negative in any band's song if they're trying to

Is the song too loud? Yeah, maybe a bit
Are the drums too dry? Depends on what you want
Does Lars play rather boring in this song? I would yes, without a doubt
Does it sound uninspired ... I don't think so. It actually does sound inspired, sounds like they really did (so far) what they were saying they would which is they were not gonna write "MOP II" but instead look to their older releases for inspiration and maybe even direction in mindset. I think they did just that
Is this gonna be a masterpiece .. no, but it could be a really good gateway cd. I used to be REALLY badass on a skateboard, I'd probably break my ass if I just jumped on one now and tried to do 1/2 the crazy shit I used to be able to. But the more I would do it, the better I would get at it right? Maybe this won't be the ultimate Metallica cd but it could possibly be leading to at least a couple more REALLY really good releases down the road.

Just my thoughts.

Cheers!

The beginning sounds like The Unforgiven, so much so that you feel like they keep fucking it up.

I've given it a few more listens since my comments yesterday. My disappointment has only gotten worse. I have personally given up hope.

And whatever former era of greatness that they're trying to take their stylistic direction from - it still doesn't work with James' pathetic caterwauling.

EXACTLY what I thought. Seriously, I thought maybe someone hijacked their myspace site and put their own wannabe, no talent, teen garage band up there (a comment on the music, composition, AND engineering). I had to check around on several sites, since so many people were going on how good it was. I knew I couldn't be listening to the same thing as them. Oh...how I wish that was the case.

I'm by no means a Metallica hater. The first song I ever recorded on a borrowed Tascam 4 track and my old Roland707 drum machine was "For Whom The Bell Tolls". This new stuff (putting it politely) is not Metallica. But then again, in my opinion, Metallica ceased to be Metallica after the Black Album. There are obvious attempts to capture the old magic on this new song, but they failed...miserably. I never thought Metallica would become a motivational poster for EPIC FAIL...or DO NOT WANT. :erk:

this is probably the best single post in the history of internet forums. images and words alike. bravo.

 cheers bro

I just feel that around the time when the song "I Disappear" from the Mission Impossible movie was released
...something happened within the band...that was the last song I can recall being decent(even though it wasn't metal) it was still catchy.

Either Hetfield needs to start drinking again or if my theory is correct...
Cliff actually did write all the songs riffs/harmonies and they have been using the left over recordings from the past to create new songs until around 2000.

I just find it strange how they had tons of great songs over the decades and now they can't even get it together for one song....boggles my mind!

lol sounds like a bunch of nickelback panzies entered the tread. waaah song is too long, waaah random guitar riffs, waaah *inserts load cd*.

gtfo, Metallica has always been known for this and I'm glad they are returning somewhat to their roots.

Without this thread turning ugly, I can appreciate the longer Metallica songs of old. Its not the length per se that I have the problem with - its the fact that it feels like a load of riffs thrown on top of each other. Older Metallica songs progress through the riffs instead of just dropping a new one in for the sake of it. I can very happily listen to ..And Justice For All and I rate that album pretty highly (as well as the 2 before it, all of which have a number of "long" songs).

I also have never listened to Nickleback except for what I have heard on TV and on the radio.
