I would trade a loss for a healthy Aaron Smith. Today is a bad day for the Steelers. Smith has a torn triceps and is done for the season and, at 35, possibly for his career. This is the third year in the last 4 that Smith has had a season ending injury. Hopefully they are better equipped to compensate for his absence this year than they were last year with Ziggy Hood being in his second year now. Brett Keisel getting back and healthy is at an absolute priority now, as the Steelers are down to four healthy linemen right now.
There was some suspect playcalling today, especially the very vanilla run scheme employed. The Steelers got nothing done on the ground all day. The Dolphins fared far worse until Smith left the game, though they still managed only very modest success. The Steelers continue to stifle teams for below team average rushing performances, but allow above team average passing performances. The failure to get pressure on 3 and 4 man rushes is the main culprit. LeBeau did not put a premium on pressure, which he should have.
Roethlisberger looked great throwing the ball all day. I don't even want to talk about his fumbles. I'm just glad they don't show up in the passer rating, not that that's very important.
Mike Wallace is evidently good for a 40+ yard catch per game. He averages over 25 yards per catch.
Emmanuel Sanders fumbled the opening kickoff and allowed the Dolphins to get a cheap 3 point lead over the turnover, but after that, he really made up for it with 4 really nice returns, including a 48 yarder on what turned out to be the game winning drive. He also caught another key 3rd down pass for 18 yards and was in on more than one special teams tackle.
Hines Ward made multiple highlight reel type catches and plays, proving that determination is more key to success than speed or finesse.
LaMarr Woodley missed the majority of the game with a hamstring tweak. On running downs, Timmons shifted to outside linebacker and Larry Foote stepped back into his old spot on the inside. On passing downs, rookie Jason Worilds saw significant time, and he did very well in his limited capacity. He pressure Chad Henne on the last two plays of the game and made sure he couldn't make a play, so I'm pleased with that.
And I'm pleased with the W, but the loss of Smith is going to hurt them this year much more than an L at this point of the season would have. I already predict the Saints to beat them next week. The Steelers have a number of things to work on; some of them will not get fixed, and some of them can not.
