The Steelers' secondary had overall possibly its best day, perhaps with the exception of the Titans game, against the Bengals on Sunday. Ike Taylor had a very good game as he has almost all season, and William Gay and Bryant McFadden were not bad either. Gay had a bad missed tackle in the open field, but he later made up for it on a corner blitz. McFadden's strongsuit has always been solid tackling at the point of attack, and he continues to do that. Ryan Clark bought Ochocinco a cinnamon roll. Troy Polamalu...well, yeah. He should probably be the defensive mvp this year.
James Harrison didn't record a single statistic except a QB hit the entire game, yet that doesn't mean his presence was not felt. His pressure was key on nearly all of the sacks and many of the hurries that they had throughout the game. After jumping offsides on a third down play that resulted in an incompletion on a drive that the Bengals ultimately scored their only points, Woodley made up for it by recording a pick six and two sacks, one of which knocked the Bengals out of field goal range. Lawrence Timmons looks to finally be healthier after the hip pointer he suffered a few weeks ago, and James Farrior is still playing at a pro bowl level. Really, the Steelers entire linebacking unit could start in the pro bowl for the AFC this year, they've been that good.
On the d-line, Brett Keisel is looking about as good as he ever has. He had six tackles and a pass batted down, which is quite a day in a 3-4. Ziggy Hood is still getting better and better. He got a lot of penetration this last game, one of them directly influencing one of Woodley's sacks by forcing Palmer to step up in the pocket.
Offensively, the line is really hurting what the Steelers are able to do. Right now, 3 players are playing on the line that I expect will not be starting next year, if they're even on the team. Jonathan Scott at left tackle has to be one of the worst in the league, but he's the best they have with Max Starks on IR. Flozell Adams at right tackle has done his part, but he's very old at this point and Willie Colon belongs there. Ramon Foster replaced Trai Essex at right guard in the middle of the season and they both suck. I'm hoping that the Steelers are able to draft Mike Pouncey in the second round next draft. A line like this:
Max Starks - Chris Kemoeatu - Maurkice Pouncey - Mike Pouncey - Willie Colon
looks pretty good to me. It would definitely be the best the Steelers have had in several years with Marvel Smith, Alan Faneca, and Jeff Hartings. But poor blocking, not knowing how to block, and penalties are really stalling drives. There are way too many hurries, run stuffs, and penalties that they allow or commit, and it's holding back a fairly potent offense. I don't know if it's any worse than the line they've had for the past 3 years though. Pouncey is certainly a monumental improvement over Hartwig, but he's playing like he's hit the rookie wall lately. The number two seed could be critical for the Steelers just so that they can have a week off to help certain key players recuperate (though that can be said for any team).
At running back, Mendenhall did what he could with what little he was given. The holes are getting smaller and smaller for him, and he can do only so much on his own. Many of his yards are extremely hard earned and created through his own effort. He must be high on the list of RAC yards. Mewelde Moore did a solid job in spotting Mendenhall occasionally, but Redman is still heavily underutilized. He had one carry for 4 yards on a 3rd and one, and a few blitz pickups in the passing game.
There were several excellent catches by the wide receivers today, the best one being by Antwaan Randle El, who saw a bit of playing time after Emmanuel Sanders left briefly with a knee injury. He basically had to jump as high as he possibly can and snag a ball with one hand. That play led to he field goal before halftime to give the Steelers a 10-7 lead. Hines Ward also made several big receptions, including a 29 yarder on 2nd and 30, and had over 100 yards while moving to 10th all time in receptions. Mike Wallace had 80-something yards on 5 receptions, including another nice run-after-catch for a pass thrown behind the line of scrimmage, netting 22 yards on a 2nd and 20, and made a nice 33 yard reception over Leon Hall later in the game. Antonio Brown also had 3 receptions, his most action in the offense all season.
Roethlisberger played a very good game considering the circumstances. He played the first half with a visor on in the rain, which clearly affected his accuracy, so he had it removed at halftime. He was subject yet again to more hits to the head that were not called, and a deliberate knee to the face which went, of course, completely unnoticed. It's insane the way the league is not giving Roethlisberger the same protection that other quarterbacks get. Michael Vick gets banged around almost as much as Ben as well, but at least he gets a flag on rare occasions. There hasn't been a single roughing the passer thrown for Ben all season, which is absurd. The league needs to look into this discrepancy. The rules are the rules and everybody needs to play by them, but it is the league's obligation to officiate evenly and equitably among all players and teams, and that's clearly not being done in very obvious ways that can be corrected. There's no way that the same official that called 2 holding penalties on the Steelers in two drives couldn't also see the beating that Roethlisberger was taking on those same drives. This story is getting old.
Injury concerns continue to bog down the Steelers, like all teams at this juncture of the season, however. Roethlisberger had his injured foot and ankle fallen on during the game, and he had a pronounced limp for the remainder of the game, especially on the sidelines. Troy Polamalu had his achilles tendon injury flare up during his pick six return, which also continued to hinder him throughout the game, and it looked like he probably made it even worse by his stupid play after his second interception. He might not practice at all this week (he's been missing wednesday-thursday practice for a month now already), but he should play against the Jets. Emmanuel Sanders briefly left the game with a knee injury but returned. Anthony Madison was injured falling on a mishandled punt return, but also got back into the game. Jason Worilds got injured late in the game as well, and I don't believe he did return, so I don't know his status at this point. But the Steelers have lingering injuries to deal with probably for the rest of the season for two of their most important players. Heath Miller is also continue to recover from the concussion he suffered against the Ravens (on a play that should have been flagged, of course).
