emerson, lake and palmer, translantic, flower kings, pink floyd, ayreon, etc... etc...

absolutely amazing genre in terms of songwriting, technical proficiency/musicianship, and emotion

Ayreon is so horribly cheesy and pompous. They don't deserve to be mentioned next to Pink Floyd.

And I generally disagree with your notion that prog rock is the best form of rock. The signal to noise ratio in prog rock is very bad. There are some great prog bands (or there used to be anyway, most neo-prog is appalling as well) but there is so much utterly horrible pretentious wankery shit outthere. Even most of the famous prog bands eventually descended into wallowing in their own semen instead of writing decent songs.

That's quite true, actually. What's catagorized as prog nowadays is phenomenally different from what was done in the 70's. And also true, most great prog bands became AIDS in the 80's, along with many other greats (The Stones, George Harrison, Tangerine Dream, countless other bands with terrible 80's work). This is part of the reason why I consider punk/hardcore and metal to be the best music in the 80's.

EDIT: I was browsing through a record store, and some young teens were talking about Operation: Mindcrime.

I remarked "Man, that album is so cheesy."

The kid says, "Welcome to prog."

This is how Prog as a genre term has evolved, in a way that a cheesy broadway-musical styled Rock Opera with very streamlined tracks (considering what had been previously done) could be called "progressive."

I'm not much of a Beatles fan myself actually, but give me Deep Purple (and other like bands) or a shit load of stoner rock and I'm happy. :)

I don't see how anyone can like doom without liking and appreciating rock. It just doesn't make sense.

I was making a generalizing statement----I tend to not like Rock music, however there are certain bands that are undoubtedly good. Albeit perhaps a little overrated. (ie. The Beatles, Led Zeppelin...)

edit: I made such a strong statement because I hate Big Dave and anything he likes I instinctively hate a little. :(
