Official - "Holy Diver" tribute discussion thread

Hey Guys, I'd like to express my opinion and please don't think that this is sour grapes or anything....;)
Marco's GF has a beautiful voice and her version is certainly interesting. What I miss though is the aggressivenes that the song should have. You've got the raging guitars in the background and the voice of an angel up front. This is my personal opinion, I don't want to impose on anybody.
Johnny, I'd really be disappointed if I wouldn't feature on this tune, since I was the first one to be planned for it. But I won't be the one to decide which version should be the final one. I suggest to let all the members taking part in the tribute project to vote on it.
Just my personal opinion, don't wanna step on anybody's toes here, 'cos I love this site and there are great people here.;)

I agree with everything there. She has a really nice voice, but lacks the aggressiveness you *need* in that song.

Don't feel stepped on my toes dude ;)
We (especially her) just thought that we allready had 2 more raw versions, so we went for something more melodic...doing something more powermetalish would have even been easier for her anyway

As I stated a few pages back in the thread, she doesn't care that much if we take her version or not, because she did it rather for herself than anything else + it was good practice for the next few weeks of tracking vocals for our album (and finding out that I need new headphones to track her without monitors cranked *doh*).
Neither do I, because I can make a mixdown and listen to that version too as often as I want

I can perfectly understand that everyone who allready put efford into this wants to be on the song, that's why I think that both of you have the right to be on this song.
You were ment to sing this at the beginning and Johnny was kind enough to help us out when we thought you couldn't be reached.
I'm fine with every solution ;)

Lol if you want an aggressive version I could do that one as well
buuuuuut nobody would be happy with a deathmetal version of the song of me ruining it I think :muahaha:

How about if we do like a "vocal duel" type thing? like one line per singer and then change? and layers on parts we want to have emphasis on.

I'm open for everything, I just don't want to have to edit/arrange it 50 times...so it would be good if we could agree on a plan or something ;)

I edited the previous post

Glad I exported them all from the same point right ? ;)
you're tha man bro

yeah something like this!
I just would like to know if theres any preferences in who's doing what + if the guys would be ok with it...
or if they would be ok with something like this:

there's 4 verses (I think), so one for evey single one and one in that duett mode you posted...
+ matching stuff together at the epic parts (with focus on someone else everytime maybe?)
I'm just toying with ideas though....

Well, joe's "the vision never dies" line was so good that I think he should take that part.

I thought the same about Johnnies "Between the velvet lines"

Hey AHJ, that mix sounds pretty good!

Well I guess I'm gonna try something like this then :D
We anyway have some time left until the final mix has to be finished, adjustments should be possible until everyone's happy :)

I know I have no part in this whatsoever, but I just have to chime in and say that version with all three vocalist sounds awesome! You should really think about proceeding that way.

I am currently on the train heading back to Helsinki (had to do a fucking 600km roundtrip just to pick a fucking FedEx envelope, hurrr!), but as I have nothing better to do now for a few days, could you Mago send me like the (maybe wav rather than mp3?) backingtrack as separate stereofile and then the different vocal take as stems (one stereofile per singer) via pm, so I could quickly try to make a mix that "I like" and then you can like proceed from there. And can you please turn the synths up from other places than verses, just a bit

Woa how far in the north do you live if not even FedEx dares to go up there?! ;)

Just to comfirm that I understood what you mean:
1 Stereo backingtrack (with louder Anssi-Synths ;) )
1 Steriotrack per singer (lead and backingvocals)
for you to arrange the vocals, so that I know how to edit them, right?
sorry, I'm a bit slow in the head, just came back from the gym

Don't worry about the mix, I think it's 80% a headphone mix because I mostly worked on it at night, so we can talk about the mix when we fixed the arrangement (vocals still need to be tweaked anyway I think, reverb and Eqwise mostly, I hope I got the right amount of comp)

My opinion:

1 - I think something went wrong on the reverb...sounds like we all fell in a giant well. I realize it was just a test though, so no big deal.

2 - I think if we are going to have 3 singers on the song, we need to pick one main vocal and the other 2 record to match it. It sounds way off when grouped together and is very distracting. I don't think it can even be edited to be close.
