Opeth going down the tubes? ...

Christ almighty people; dsoul actually asks something legitimate, that guaranteed most fans have asked themselves, and 90% of what he gets in response are flames. Disagree? Fine, tell him why. But don't post just to swear and tell him that the thread is shit...

You know why i dont find Opeth playing with Korn threatening to Opeth's musical direction?
1) The way they mention it on opeth.com it almost sounds like they find it funny. If they considered Korn a serious band to play along side, hell, if they respected them in the slightest, THEN i might worry that Opeth might move in Korn's direction.
2) Korn pales next to Opeth. Seriously, everyone bitches and moans about how crap nu-metal is, yet when you have the chance for nu-metal fans to see this, people STILL bitch and moan. Somehow i get the idea that Opeth will influence Korn's fans more than Korn's fans will influence Opeth, and i dont think that is just me being an Opeth fanboy.
3) Opeth has never stood still, and the fact that nearly everyone in the metal world has some opinion of them really does mean that they need to search out new audiences. Regardless of the other bands on their roster, RR can definitely help the band do this. Mikael said himself that RR surprised him in how professional they are, so maybe you should cut the guy some slack for actually knowing whats best for the band. Opeth will have failed if in 10 years they are stlil playing to the exact same crowds they've been playing to for the past 5, because that is far less than they deserve, and they do have the potential to gain many more fans.
4) Being introduced to new audiences does not necessitate that they change their music. I dont care how many examples of other bands you can cite and discuss; Opeth is not other bands, and Mikael has never, by anything i have ever heard or heard about him, seemed like the type of guy to want Opeth-lite playing on the radio. All this is pretty hypothetical remember - do you have any evidence at all yet that Mikael has changed the music he wants to play based on what someone else wants him to do?
5) It is one concert. Dont blow this out of proportion guys.

Dsoul, i know it IS a bit of a shock, but I really think you should wait till the new album comes out before you make up your mind.

With all the respect, I think that some of you guys are more in love with their "underground" derived identity than the music itself. I'm afraid Opeth isn't your obscure metal band anymore, the DD albums actually scored fucking high on the selling chart. Heck, their live DVD was playing at Sony's store and it's more and more common to see people with Opeth shirts. This is reality, like it or not. I mean, as long as you care for the music itself, what does it matter if Opeth have a Korn t-shirt or opens for fucking Britney Spears? In fact, Mikael said in an old interview that he did like a particular Korn song. Will I stop listening to Porcupine Tree because Steven Wilson is a fan of System of a Down? That's just crasy! To me, Opeth stayed true to themselves during their whole discographie and I'm confident that they'll continue to be so. If you guys are to worship your arcane musical taste, try Velvet Cacoon, Thergothon I don't know...but not Opeth. Otherwise, you'll be disappointed as some already are.
Agreed. Completely.

I agree also. Quality is not measured by how unknown the band is. "OMG HAVE YOU HEARD NECRODEATHCHRISTFOREST THEY'RE SO ELITE"... :Smug:

Ive had so many band reccomendations by people, only to find the band is poor, not much musical ability. Underground music doesnt ensure good music...

What annoys me is that people find a band like opeth, amazingly talented and not barred by being "elitests", doing what they want and still producing great albums. Then people start spreading the word of this great band, who are relatively unknown on the scale of things. the popularity grows, more people listen and enjoy and then hey....the bands almost popular. the original fans say the band has sold out, then they stop listening. Guess what guys, its your fault the band has gotten popular....

As much as it pains to see Opeth touring with these bands and their stuff eventually goin to sell alot. They are the only band that deserve it. Mike has a family to support now. he needs that money. sure im dissapointed that they are playing with these half assed bands. but Opeth are a band that have truly earned everything they get.

I have been a diehard Opeth fan for a long time. And I have always had tremendous respect for Opeth NOT doing what everyone else seemed to be doing. ie going the way of Hypocrisy, or Entombed, or In Flames, or Satyricon, in that they never seemed to sell out or go gay. I say sell out like Hypocrisy with the ridiculous Catch 22 and Arrival albums that sounded like poor swedish versions of Slipknot, or gay like the terrible newer Gothenburg sound In Flames created thanks to such masterpieces (SARCASM) as Reroute to Remain and Soundtrack to your escape. Opeth never seemed to do this, from Orchid all the way through Damnation they stuck to what got them a cult underground following that turned into the massively used community that these forums are today: which was being highly skilled, unique, and absolutely refused to rely on commercialization or dumbing down of their music like Hypocrisy and Entombed did.

Now, I am afraid I have bought my last Opeth album. Granted, the cover art I have seen, album title, and track names don't scare me.....but getting on the Roadrunner bandwagon and touring with FUCKING KORN??!?!?!? KORN?!?!?!?!?!?! That's worth repeating for a third time.....KORN?!?!?!? What in the flying fuck!? My heart skipped a few beats in disgust when I heard that Opeth, Mike Akerfeldt's Opeth, the man whose laid down the most brutal vocals in death metal with Bloodbath and the most heart tearing gut wrenching screams on Brave Murder Day will open for the biggest piece of shit alternative band in history? Wow. I don't know why they left Century OR peaceville, but it CANT be that bad.... Jonas and Anders seem to still find Peaceville adequate, why can't Opeth? I mean, is it really worth it to be on a label with Slipknot and have Opeth Street teams and shit? As Fenriz might say...."this is not true metal".

I really, really do hope that Ghost Reveries is a good album. I really, really hope that all of this will be cancelled out by continued good music....but the fact that on Opeth's Roadrunner page, their classic picture has been photoshopped, and the dark, foreboding atmosphere has been replaced with bright blue skies....does not bode well for anything good. What a shame.

just STFU

Dude, they photoshopped a cardigan sweater onto Mike too! WTF!

Well, people (this is aimed at the ones having a bitch & moan about Korn and RR), think about this. Korn, a band with little musical talent, fucking hell, they started the nu-metal trend (and curse their blackened angst-ridden souls for it), but they've got to where they are today by being a commercial band, ie, doing it for the money. Opeth have got to where they are today by staying true to the music they love (and all of us love) and they're on the same tour, hell, if you're going to be at the SOTU tour, doin't fucking see Korn, nuff said, but it gives opeth fans the chance to see them live, and since they ain't ever coming down NZ ways, people should be fucking grateful to see em live.
You think that after making awesome music for 15 years or so that Opeth are gonna start being commercial because they sign to a big label, fuck no. As Sir Akerfeldt said in his post, he wants his music to be available everywhere, and that is a good thing, you can't get no Opeth records in NZ without searching for fucking ages, so it'll be good to go into a cd shop here and pick up Ghost Reveries.

Ok, i've had my bitch and moan, time for a double of jack and some serious headbanging to 'April Ethereal'. Peace fellow Opeth-lovers

Korn pwns you so shut the fuck up. You wish you could be in a band half as unique as they are. Besides, Opeth is not touring with them, get your facts straight.

I could go outside and with one hand keep a beat by hitting a cat with a wiffle bat and with the other hand throw rocks through windows while singing in a language I made up and it'd be incredibly unique but it would still suck ass in every aspect except for uniqueness.

Being unique doesn't mean good, nor does it imply pwnage
