Opinions on Martin Lopez

the man knows what he's doing. he's got the right approach, he does some great rhythmic stuff without having to play fast. i'm getting a bit sick of everyone praising the speed drummers, there really isn't much too em. the key is taste, not speed. speed is good, but taste is more important. lopez has taste. and speed.

Any doubt of that? NO

martin lopez is an insane drummer. i saw opeth live last february, and i was in complete awe of lopez. i play the drums, and the first opeth i heard was master's apprentices. i couldn't believe that someone could play the double bass like that. it really inspired me to try to learn how to play like that. and watching him live, and knowing that he's actually doing all the double bass was an awesome experience. i think it really takes a good musician to be able to go from songs like wreath and deliverance and switch it up to stuff like on damnation. IMO martin lopez is one of the greatest drummers in the genre today.

Haha, from now on I will no longer say 'blast beats'... I will refer to them as 'more snare hitting' beats. :tickled:

And yeah, the new album should be wicked fast. That's about the only thing Opeth hasn't done before.

I'm going try to learn it. I hope it's not that fast because then I will have trouble covering it and learning it. I don' twant SO much high energy feeling to it.

Anyway, I have to keep telling myself, "When this new album comes out, I won't be able to play any of the double bass stuff."

Hey maybe I'll train double bass for an hour each day until then since the album won't be out for months. Yea that's what I'll do!

i wanna hear lopez on tablas dammitt!!!!!!

he's really really good with oriental/middle-eastern beats (like on bleak, closure or hmmm i think it was wreath...no deliverance...dont remember which song...there is a small section where he goes middle-eastern again)...he blends that stuff into opeth very well (and of course we all know mikael loves middle-eastern tunes).

excellent drummer. very original

but my fave drummer is still danny carey

A cool thing about this thread is that people with music knowledge(whether they're musicians or not) know enough not to say that drummers aren't real musicians. Drives me nuts to hear people with no clue say that...I'd like to see 99.9% of them try to do anything like Lopez, Peart, Zonder, Portnoy...not to mention the jazz greats like Kroupa, Rich, Barry Smith...etc... They couldn't hold their drum stick....

my girlfriend likes the "nothing" face Lopez puts on when playing, quite atypical for metal drummers trying to put on a little show in the back.

what I like is the beat varieties and obvious Latin influence, something I'd imagine is rare elsewhere in death metal.

pretty funny guy too. I gave him a stick to sign...he shakes his head in disgust, crosses out the "zildjian" logo and writes "vic firth" before signing his name.

That's funny about the autographed stick and the "nothing" face. Watching Lopez behind the kit is like poetry in motion. He's awesome! :worship:

Yes...he's playing too fucking fast and his face is like nothing is happening. Maybe he's thinking on what he's going to eat the day after that.

Hehe wow Luz, I love you. You make me laugh with your posts all the time.

Anyway, I totally agree with you, there's no way I can play some parts with a serious face. I definitely have to be concentrating, but sometimes muscles in your face have to be moved while you're banging out hard drum stuff. I tend to stick out my tongue to the side, probably looks really stupid. :loco:
But when the song is over I do this  and it's all ok.

Then sometimes people are like wow he actually played it! :yow:

Haha.

^wow. people actually say drummers aren't musicians?

I assume you're being sarcastic. Maybe you haven't heard that said, but I have plenty. Smart-asses on the radio, some musical jokes say it...based on this weird preconception. Some people think that only guitarists and pianists, or brass/orchestral are the real deal. A guy banging on drums isn't. Doesn't seem as technically difficult to them. I've seen people who've never played before sit down and can't figure out what the hell to do...some who are proficient on other instruments. It's a coordination of the whole body thing..like being an athlete.

Of course, I tried playing guitar and was no good at that. Could've given it much more of a chance though. Was OK on piano, but never tried hard on that either. It's just a matter of finding what you're built for...unless you're the type who's good at everything.

some people do fail to realize that music is actually four dimensional. and that you can actually accomplish all four dimensions of music with drums. it's just that people focus on pitch as being music, and pitch isn't the focus of drums.

Seth: i wasnt being sarcastic. i seriously cant think of any time ive heard that. somehow ive surrounded myself with musicians and music fans and dont bother talking music with people who dont know anything about it. but, i see what youre saying: i wouldnt put it past anyone to say something ignorant like that.

I understand completely why most people who listen to crap music wouldn't think drummers were musicians; there really are a smaller percentage of drummers that can be considered true musicians than most other instruments, since most styles of modern music use the drums only to keep time, so most drummers don't learn anything past that. I'm not putting drummers down, I'd say there are even fewer bass 'musicians' than drummers. Usually other bassists I see suck a pathetically ridiculous amount ass, just doodling along to the chord changes. At least drummers do fills sometimes. But think about how many bands you've heard where you say 'They're shitty, but the guitarist is really good!'

Of course guitar is a pussy instrument, so...

i've heard the jokes, but its more aimed at the common sense of drummers, which can be argued. musically though, saying drums aren't instrumentally important is moot. the very first instruments were drums. and in most cases, the drums hold the rhythm for the rest of the band to elaborate on.
