Other Power and Progressive Metal bands

Stratovarius anything isn't worth buying.

+1:lol:

many of the bands being mentioned are steriotypical and uninteresting.

look at Blind Guardian, Wuthering Heights, Angra(Temple of shadows), Rage, Beyond Twilight, Nevermore, Gammaray, Pain of Salvation, and Crimson glory.

other bands that are originaland col in the power metal genre
Outworld,Falconer, Morgana Lefay, Masterplan, and Adagio.

Dark Moor, spanish power metal band, made an interesting album: "The Gates of Oblivion". Chromatic lines on keyboards. Vocalist was female, new singer is male.
How come so few people are into this band? I absolutely love them - their sense of melody is incredible.

Also, there's not nearly enough talk of Angra on this thread. As far as prog/power goes, there's not many who can beat them.

I think I'm the only one on here who thinks that Sonata Artica is generic power metal.

actually.. when i said:

i was refering to sonata arctica, stratovarius, hammerfall, Rhapsody, Dragonforce, Edguy, firewind, and Narnia.

so yes i agree with you that SA is a generic power metal band.

Good to know. So many people seem to praise them, and I just don't get it. I also agree with you on Hammerfall, Rhapsody, and Dragonforce (I haven't heard the others). I require a little more substance in my songs than constant double bass, unemotional guitar playing, bass playing only the root note and being boring and uncreative, and triumphant choruses that all sound the same (i.e. Dragonforce). I guess I'm a picky bastard.

No, you are a correct bastard as I agree.:)

I found out I don't care much for power metal. I'm just going to continue listening to progressive rock for pussies like The Flower Kings and The Tangent.

Sonata arcticas stuff all sounds the same!!Rhapsody are the greatest in that genre. If you want to listen to the best of the best then check out

Sonata Arctica has actually made one of the best songs ever: White pearl, black ocean.

You really do enjoy those exclamation marks don't you? :) Yeah I know what you mean, I'm not a big fan of Power metal. However there are a few power metal songs that are super mega awesome. I mean "super mega awesome!!!" :D

...I, um...I guess I just can't agree with you about that song. Hmm.

That guy should not sing in his "angry voice". It sounds like Linkin Park. The music isn't bad, but it's pretty connect-the-dots power metal ballad, if you ask me.

I usually don't, either - I prefer a healthy balance of power and progressive, leaning towards the progressive. That's why I like Symphony X so much. Too many power metal bands make the same kind of song over and over again - super fast, constant double bass, no substance. Dragonforce (aka the AC/DC of power metal) is a perfect example.

Ecliptica from Sonata Arctica isn't that bad.
But from then it pretty much goes downwards... Unia is just :puke:
I hate the sound of that one.
White Pearl, Black Ocean is not that bad, it's one of their better songs.

Then take Kamelot, they did the opposite. Since The Fourth Legacy it got better and better! Ghost Opera, their latest, is a very good disc.

One of the very very first bands that got me into metal was Blind Guardian. I recently digged up my dvd from Imaginations Through The Looking Glass and I enjoyed it again.

But Dragonforce, Hammerfall and Stratovarious just make my cry...

I didnt enjoy that song at all. It sounds way to commercialized, generic and rhythmically comatose.

Detective - AC/DC blows this away. Why? Because they never tried to be something they werent, just good fun wreckless music. Bands like this strike me as trying to be deep when beneath it all lies the most elementary elements, so it just never jives.

Helloweens Keepers have their acceptable moments because they came first, but here, over twenty years later, most of the current foot step bands I find less stimulating than 80's pop metal, because that was... what it was, never pretending to be deep, never as long winded as power metal that goes nowhere and the cycle only lasted 6-10 years, depending on where you place the cut off lines.
