because you cannot quantify FUN but you can quantify REST
for instance you can say I had 3 apples this week, but you cannot say I had 3 funs this week

When you put "a" before "fun"...then the word fun becomes an adjective. For example: "I had a fun day." Then you can say, "I had fun"...where fun is a noun. English is weird.
