Post samples of your playing

Wow, this thread has been resurrected? Where the hell have I been? And why didn't I post in here the first time around?

I kinda feel off topic now that everyone's talking about rack gear, but anyawy - my favorite playing/tone of mine is on the Meltdown solos (link in my sig). I'm the guy with the smooth Strat tone. And the solos in the song "Blessed Wrath" (Immortal Eclipse link in my sig).

Am I the only one who's kind of a minimalist when it comes to gear? The less crap I use, the less chance something fucks up when gigging. And my RG or Strat into my Laney works fine for me.

That and the fact that it was my first time ever seeing Dream Theater play a full set.

...I'd like to have half that gear, but can you say overkill? I've heard people with tones as good as his who don't take a fucking Radio Shack on the road.

Btw, for samples of my playing, I just found out this was online: http://www.myspace.com/serbianshredder , the myspace profile of a fellow forumer (MetalMan57) and drummer of Immortal Eclipse. He needed some videos for a Music Tech project, so we just took a clip of an early practice. We're playing Domination by Pantera. I'm not really a Pantera fan, but it's a freaking fun song.

Well, I don't think its really overkill once you realize that he actually needs all that stuff because John's overall tone has changed basically from album to album, and since he plays all his songs spanning from the last 20 years on tour, he needs quick axcess to them all. Thats why theres a lot of the same (like multiple amp heads) which just have different setting on them, and he can switch between them at will without any noise.

just like john myung who I believe has a tower just with EQs all with different presets, for every song.

Is it absolutely necessary to recreate the tones from Awake, I&W, or ACOS in a live setting, because they were different from Octavarium's? Huge difference in the studio, but with a live metal band, it's gonna sound like a loud distorted guitar. Almost all guitarists have different tones from album to album, and don't bring these crazy setups on the road to recreate every nuance.

I can see JP having a slightly larger rig because he uses a pretty big variety of effects. But I still think it's massive overkill. It's not like anyone walks away from a DT concert thinking "actually, the SFAM riffs had the tone from Octavarium tonight, so the songs didn't sound right."

(Edit: Lotta typos. I'm tired, sorry if this post makes no sense.)

Absolutly it is. If they were just some generic rock group it wouldnt be, but John's tones have become legendary in the guitar world, and are a vial key to to the flavor of each song. Not to mention i'm sure hes an anal perfectionist when it comes to his tones. As well as what his fans have come to expect from him in a live situation.

could somebody help me with my output stage or power amplifier please?

I have a 200W RMS (8 ohm mono/16 ohm stereo) guitar box,

While searching for an ampI found this one here :

t.amp TA 1600 (http://www.thomann.de/de/tamp_ta600_endstufe.htm (german) )

2 x 300 Watt 4Ohm
2 x 200 Watt 8 Ohm
1 x 500 Watt 8 Ohm

Now I'm afraid that I either put in too much power to the box or too less and either destroy the box or the output stage,
of course it should work since there are 2X200W 8 ohm so I could run the box in mono and stereo, but is there any other problem I don't find?

So..would it work? and would it sound good, since the amp is quite cheap => crap sounding?

Thanks!

If not do you know other power amps or should I just get the CRATE CPB150 and be happy?

Thanks!

ok, sorry, we got a little sidetracked and forgot about you, I blame it all on Petrucci  .

anyways, your looking for a guitar power amp huh? the amps you listed arn't really made for guitar, more for PA's and Keys, It just wouldn't be that great for guitar (very dry, stale and no character). you shouldn't really be concerned with wanting lots and lots of watts (eccept making sure you don't blow your cabs), because they can be rather misleading. For example, a Mesa or Marshall 20/20 (20 watts, EL84 tube power) Is just as loud if not louder than a 100w Solid State amp.

Good sound budget power amps you should check out are the Peavey Classic 50/50 (around $300 used) the 60/60 version is a little less. The Carvin TS100 all tube power amps are insane, there EL84 or biasable for 6L6 power, 100 watts, killer. (around $300-$400) The standard Mesa Boogie power amps (20/20, 2:50, Fifty/fifty, 2:90, 2:95 and 2:100) are all insane amps, but can get pricy (in that order, your looking at $650, $475-$525, $500, $650, $500-800, $800) these are all approx street prices for used units, you can expect to pay 2-3x as much for new, straight from the factory, for the ones that are still being made.

oh, the crate Power Block = Junk, like all things crate. You would be much better off getting a Tube Works MosValve 962 like what Myself and Goth plays, there fairly common and are under $300..

Thanks

I've looked for everone, but they are all quite expensive,
even the Carvin 700$ :(
Of course they are great, but are there also some good power amps at around 200$-300$?

and of course some which are compatible to my guitar box

(200W RMS (8 ohm mono/16 ohm stereo)) ?

because I don't want to ruin anything.

Do you know any cool sounding power amps less than 300$?

EDIT: I just read that about the Mossalve, but sadly can't find it anywhere here in Germany :( not even on ebay...

I just gave you a bunch of options. You can get a Peavey Classic used 50/50 or 60/60 under $300. You can get a Tubeworks MosValve used for $300.

You just gotta watch Ebay for them.

The Carvin solid state amps your talking about arnt really gutar amps, there PA amps.

yeah I will continue looking for the mosvalve on ebay and the peavey as well,
but they are quite old and hard to find new, that's I asked if you know other ones, which cost new less then 300$.

I was just wanted to buy a new product, with guaranty, etc...
since my used peavey amp was just so fuckin *********************

but maybe I will also find one new by a shop offered on ebay.

Thank you very much for your help!

The Carvin Ts-100, was the 300$-400$ the used price or did you see it anywhere new for that price?

Every price I lised was for used, new from carvin there $550..Your not going to find many new good guitar power amps under $300. theres nothing wrong with getting them used, most of them are build like tanks and could withstand a Nuke. The only common issues are bad tubes and scratchy knobs, both easily fixable.

To bad you don't live in the US, a local store chain (Daddy's Junky Music) has like 4 used peavey 50/50 and 60/60's all under $300, and you can buy warrentys from them.
