Project Studio Build

Looking better all the time , can you remember your control room dimensions before you started work ? I am interested in how much the room has shrunk
after treatment etc went in . Thanks

Thanks guys :headbang:

Yeah, you can see how big the room was and how much it shrunk in this post: http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/9471502-post32.html

The controlroom was nearly 25 square meters before, so it's still pretty large imho.

We worked for 12 and a half hours in the studio today. I'm really exhausted but we made our goal: To finish the ceiling construction of the liveroom.
The pictures are horrible and you don't get anything. I'll still post them, though
The sides (except the one with the A/C unit) will also get filled with glaswool soon, and I will install LEDs/spots just like in the clouds of the controlroom. The green/white things on the ceiling is Isover again.
The whole thing will be covered with fabric - as always.

Haha thanks Mika, it means a lot!

There was pretty much no progress with the studio built at all this month, I have a lot of other things to do lately. Plus I'm fighting with German authorities at the moment because they're stupid pricks and suck donkey cock :fu: Nah really, I have to fill out 1000 documents, pay an architect to sign some stupid papers and a lot of other stupid things.. pisses me off to no end. Also the studio is in a residential area and it's not easy at all to use two goddamn rooms commercially. *sigh*

I have a question for you guys. I'm currently thinking about covering the inner frames of those absorbers (in the picture) with black fabric instead of the white one. Or at least two of the absorbers, and cover the frame for the diffusors in the other two corners with black fabric, too.
The rest of the room will be white wall / white fabric again, and there will be more visible wooden things. I think it would look cool to make the four corners black.. what do you think?

Cutting the mineral wool for the two superchunks:

The boards stand in front of the basstrap because it collapsed right on my head several times and I'm fed up with it

How big are your superchunks? How do you want to cover those? I´ll have to build some of those pretty soon.

And... don´t you need those two power outlets? ;)

Finally how did you deal with the authorities? What if they stop you to use the studio because it's in a residential area? Do you do an insurance for the clients?
Here we have the same fuckin' burocracy that obstruct instead of helping you to start working...really lame

Hey, the superchunks are the normal isover panels cut in half and then cut diagonally again. The standard panels are 160 x 62 cm I believe..

I won't cover them directly because there will be huge diffusors (2meters high and about 80cm wide) in front of them. So I will only cover them with the tripple protection, then build the diffusors right before them and cover the diffusors with the frames I used for everything else.

Yeah the power outlets are still accessible at the moment, the second picture is the other cornertrap actually  I will have to move them when I build the diffusors, though.. not sure if it's possible because of the way the diffusors are built. I can't just build the outlets in the side of the diffusors. There are plenty of other power outlets in the room though (and two seperate circuits).

Still dealing with them, I get help from a tax adviser and soon an architect.. we'll see how it goes. Chances are relatively good they will allow it because there is no noise outside and there's room for about 300 cars in the garden (and it's easily accessible).. so no parking problem - that's what they feared most apparently. I have to write a documents explaining in detail what I do, how many people will be here at most, etc etc. If they don't allow it that means I can't use the studio for commerial purpose - officially at least. My options would then be stabbing all of them or bribing ;)
But there's no reason not to allow it, it's not like I have a big shop with hundreds of customers coming each day - I know several people who work at home and changed the official purpose of some rooms in their houses from residential to commercial.

Yes I am about to sign a contract for a third-party liability insurance, that's absolutely needed.
You're right, instead of helping fresh businesses they make everythign super complicated and hard to get. We have this thing called "economic freedom" that says you can choose whatever job you like and start a business for whatever you like in theory, but it's just not true at all.

I'll work on the other side tomorrow. I have a stupidly annoying cold atm, but the show must go on ;)

The superchunks are still unfinished because I actually used all the mineral wool I purchased in the beginning. My whole garage was stuffed with it and I needed it all. I had to buy 3 more packages today but I still need 1,2 or even three more - I just couldn't fit them in my car
IMG_2094.JPG

So.. all the mineralwool-work at the ceiling is done. I think next are the big diffusor units in front of the superchunks.. I also need to install the lights (the same ones are in the controlroom) and work on the frames for the fabric (to cover all the ceiling). It's a shame to work inside with the superb weather we have right now (27°C)

Max, its looking more awesome by the day! My studio racks are also a cable nightmare. Im thinking of getting some Cable tidy kits to separate the power and audio cables
Yeah me too. I tried to seperate power and audio, but some rackunits got their power supply on the right side, others on the left.. and some have external power-supplys..

I'm working on the diffusors atm. Gotta finish the grounding first, and then they'll be painted matt black :Smokedev: Sounds good?
Well, I thought the same until I realized it means painting over 40 boards two times from all sides (grounding + paint, probbaly even a second layer of paint). The pics are kinda boring because it's white boards but I'll post them anyway, haha

IMG_2359.JPG

I started yesterday and finished painting only one side of all the boards today.. so it's about 1/4 of the work done. FFUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
We thought it would look cool if the two large diffusor units are completely black, with a white (or perhaps black) fabric behind them.. It was planned to not paint them at all and just cover them with fabric at first, but it's much cooler with the open diffusors.. The rest of the room will be white (with black bars for optical seperation and contrast), but the two diffusors and two of the absorber units in the corners of the room will be black.

By the way, I got my tax number - still waiting on the VAT number, though

I got the same problem man, Almost every unit has either a audio in or our or both + power coming from it! Going to need a few of cable tidy kits ;p HAHA!

Where you putting those diffusors your currently painting?

Hehe man you should see how it looks under my desk :) I just recently bought a Little labs Redcloud so now i got an additional 16cables (2dsubs) to add to my cable-cluster :D

Looking good btw :)

@Crilleman: Yeah especially with the Outboard stuff the amount of cables increases like crazy. On a related note: I can't wait to get a 1176 clone

The diffusors will be placed in front of the superchunks. Between those there will be 4 of the small diffusors (like the backwall of the controlroom) and absorbers.
How low is the ceiling in your mixing/tracking room?
2,40m :D That's why the ceiling is treated like crazy - no bad early reflections / flutter echoes / standing waves.. Higher would be better of course, but the room has a lot of diffusion going on (from three sides actually) so it will be pretty "live" sounding despite the low+treated ceiling.
