The Beatles are in a league of their own tbqh
Arguable. But possibly not entirely correct.
I do agree to the extent that none of the other genuinely influential bands would have existed without The Beatles.

I think you may just be trying to wind me up lol. But I would like to stress that my Dad listens to a huge variety of stuff. Lots of jazz, classical, some soulful classics. He's big on Ray Charles. He got me into Portishead. He thinks Opeth are fantastic other than the growls. I'm enjoying the album 'Drums Unlimited' by Max Roach, which he introduced me to. Only been able to hear it while I've been home, because it's on vinyl, but it's awesome.
I owe a lot of my musicality and love of music to him. Sorry, this rant was kinda pointless![]()

I wouldn't go as far to say the other bands wouldn't have existed but I would say that The Beatles had more of an impact on music overall and achieved much more in a far shorter time.
Ok, maybe they would have existed. But they would have sounded kinda different.
And I see where you're coming from, for sure. But my Launchcast Radio Player just brought up 'Karma Police' by Radiohead, and yeah... this is pretty much as good a song as has been written by anyone as far as I'm concerned. Just... absolute genius. I had a similar experience the other day when my mp3 brought up 'Let It Be'.
If I ever write a song one thousandth as good as either of those, I'll die a happy man.
Im not saying that Radiohead don't write amazing songs, (coz they do) Im saying that they haven't had anywhere near as much of an impact on music as a whole as The Beatles have.
The Beatles may have had a larger impact on popular music than any other band, but come on people, while they're incredible, they're certainly not the end all be all of music.
well thats true of course but I would probably go as far to say most important band of the 20th century?
"The fact that so many books still name the Beatles "the greatest or most significant or most influential" rock band ever only tells you how far rock music still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Rock critics are still blinded by commercial success: the Beatles sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Rock critics are often totally ignorant of the rock music of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that the Beatles did anything worth of being saved."

That whole excerpt is pretty dumb afaict.
You obviously didn't read it otherwise you'd be able to explain why
That excerpt is pathetic. Its attempting to make a statement about the Beatles not being that great, meanwhile it never so much as addresses their countless innovations in the studio, achievements in arrangement and vocal harmony, etc. In fact, it doesn't even discuss their music at all. Pretty much, its saying "They're popular so they obviously aren't the best, durrrrr stupid rock critics!"
