Recabinet

You could say the same thing about software samples (who needs drummers?), plugins (who needs racks of expensive gear?), and countless other things by that logic.

I think Shane is doing some awesome work, gathering virtually every single impulse the people that watch this forum could ever wish for...
But....
I've been fiddling with impulses ever since i found out about them just to get that extra bit in my guitar tone...trying to find the one that fits in a mix best and give the crunch i want...
And this is probably just because i have that chance through my pc... it's not like i would try to get every single marshall, peavey, engl, mesa etc cabinets in one room to try all sorts of mic angles, speakers....doing that with the mouse, changing impulses, can be boring and frustrating as hell when you have on axis, off axis, between, centre, bottom, -1, +1, half, and combinations of all that...and that's just one mic!! omg...headache...

But it just occured to me that all this, is relative to my ears....my idea of crunch, my idea of "sitting in a mix", my idea of "fits the riff"....and from time to time i've been working with specific impulses... 99.9% of the cases the impulses were from people in this forum.

What i came to realise is that if i could just have had from the beginning, the impulse i've been using lately, then i wouldn't want to mess with the whole bunch of 100s of impulses i've gathered....

So speaking, partly, money-wise a project like EZdrummer with the packs and all, takes A LOT of work to create...all the mics, the positions, the amount and quality of equipment, the post work, the labour work....too much....hence the cost.. but you get something that you know it's a lot of work and you use all of it's aspects...
With Shane's project, which i would by all means get, i'm 90% sure that i would end up using 1 or 2 impulses ...the rest would be just ..dunno...experiments...
So i'll probably end up with a pack from which i use just 1/100 out of....

And the idea of vintage stuff....don't think that would work, or justify your effort shane...I have the sound of let's say Gary Moore or Michael Lee Firkins in my mind and bluesy stuff in general.. That's a lot harder to do with impulses and it would probably end up sounding unorganic and digital ...

Oh btw... cabinet's have a character ...fact... but honestly if i could have a Mesa of Engl cabinet home i don't think i would want to try a krank, a marshall, a peavey, a fender a whatever....
The two i mentioned have a character i'd love to have in my sound and i'd just take it from there....it's all a matter of mixing the damn recorded thing...
So having just one or two AWESOME mesa or engl impulses would be more than enough for me...if someone else can get a good sound out of them (usable impulses) then i should get my butt down and work on it ...

This is precisely what I was talking about and why I think selling the individual impulses or user customized packs would be beneficial.

+1, but then I have a favourite Snare and kick on DFHS and rarely use the others. Same deal. I still like having the others though. Maybe there should be a 'project pack' for the bedroom producer who only has access to maybe one amp or whatever (my theory being you'll normally have a go-to impulse for that one amp, you know, the combination that just sounds right). The project pack having less options, and maybe a larger pack for those people that record others or have access to a wider variety of amps, guitars, players etc and need more options.

Maybe a "project pack" would have like 3 cabs or something, and only two mic positions and maybe three different mics total. So for each cab there are 6 impulses to choose from, 18 total impulses. Sell it for a good price. :)

I wonder if Shane is still checking this thread out, haha.

Well if we stick to the pricing VS packs what i'd like best is the über option of a form on the website where YOU can select everything YOU want ..which cab, which mic, positions...and a pricing is calculated for that order...I wish that was available for some other vsts and libraries...
I can understand however that in one way a company could "loose" some profit from doing this... the whole marketing idea is based on creating needs and getting the buyers to buy stuff they don't actually need....

But i find this case to be somewhat special....i wouldn't want a whole room with cabinets even if they were free.......guitars....well that may be a whole different thing :kickass:

I'm sure Shane keeps an eye on this thread...although he tried to move it to his website's forum....sorry shane...it's a place we visit either way... !!

PS:sorry if any of the above have been mentioned before but this thread is quite long and a lot of things have been said....

I'm following this thread still, and the stuff on the Recabinet forums as well. I'm in the process of lining up a bunch of gear for the project, so I've been a bit busy, but rest assured I'm reading all of the comments. Thanks!! :headbang:

To make things simple for Shane, he could always just do genre-specific packs as many software makers do. A rock/metal pack can hold the recto trad, engl v30, randall v30, recto oversize etc. and all those cabs we've come to love. Subsequent packs can be boutique cabs, combos, vintage, clean, old rock (marshall 1960a) etc.

Offering them as single impulses, whilst great for us who know what we like and will only use that, isn't so much of a financially-sound decision for him, as he needs to offload larger quantities and make larger amounts of money. I know I'd be a bit sour if everyone was just buying one or two impulses at $4 or so.

That's essentially the direction this is heading in. Of course I'm focusing on rock/metal first (Mesa, Marshall, Krank, etc. - I will try hard to honor as many of your cabinet requests as possible!). Again my plan is to release early in the holiday 2008 season.

I've also got access to a bunch of really cool vintage, Fender, Sunn, Marshall, and other stuff for a second, vintage/classic rock themed pack which I plan to release in 2009.

I just got Nebula 3 going today so I can do some testing with it, and I am rounding up some cabinets and other gear tomorrow.

I have a request which I'm not sure is viable or not, and that is to have hard copies of the packs available. Although I think that just downloading is a really easy and quick option, if I'm paying for something I really like having a box and a backup hard-copy CD, we all know computers and hard drives can be temperamental.

Woot! The website is up, when are the emails being sent out for a demo! I have a day off today, I needs impulses.

Everyone on the email list - check your email!

As you noticed, we've launched the Recabinet Website, the demo is out, and we've sent the download link to everyone on the email list. If you're not on the list, simply go to the Try/Buy page, sign up for the email list, check for the confirmation email from us, and click the confirmation link. You'll be taken to the demo download page.

Also, we've launched the new Clips and Support forum sections today. If you make a test recording with the Recabinet Demo, be sure to post it in the Clips section. If we like your clip, we'll post it on the Recabinet website in the media section, along with a link to your band/artist/producer website!

We've made the decision to release the demo a week before the November 4 release date to get the buzz going and the community clips happening. Your help is very much appreciated!! :headbang:
