Recomend me some music! thread

Podgie is spot on. Doom is quite a wide genre and stretches into stoner, which id probably be better at recomending for than the other styles of doom as im not as into the others as much.

But i think Ahab is a must for the darker doom stuff.

My point exactly Siobhan.

(Obscura are good, very good in fact. Have you heard Gorod? They're a French technical death metal band in a similar vein to Obscura... Check out their album Process of a New Decline is you haven't already.)

This is the way a thread like this should work. Otherwise it's just people posting stuff they buzz off, instead of people asking for recommendations.

Anyways, I know you listen to a bit of black metal already (1349, Gorgoroth etc.) so I'm not sure who to suggest but if you haven't already heard any of these they're probably worth a listen. Tsjuder, Diabolical Masquerade, Absu (more 'blackened thrash' but yeah), Dissection, Naglfar, Shining, Drudkh, Gehenna, Peste Noir, Taake...

As for doom, my recommendations would depend on what kind of doom you're after... If you want gothicy doom it's all about My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Katatonia, Draconian etc. If you want heavy death/doom check out THE MOST OVERLOOKED BAND EVER, Indesinence. Ahab as well, I rate those guys very highly indeed. As for more traditional doom bands I'd suggest Cathedral, Candlemass, The Gates of Slumber, Reverend Bizarre, Grand Magus, The Obsessed etc.

Danke Podgie :) will check a lot of those bands out tonight and let you know my opinion! I like Paradise Lost and My Dying Bridge already so I am sure your choices shall be good.

DOOM!

Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
Cathedral - Forest of Equiliberium
Sleep - Dopesmoker

These are perfect bands to start with in doom and they're probably the best anyway.

If you browser the Rise Above records bands too, you cannot go wrong. Lee Dorian is such a god for many reasons.

Lee Dorian is a lovely man, I seen Cathedral a few years ago and met him after the gig, a gentleman I must say!

I had a nice response to this, but then I accidently closed my browser out.... :(
So I'll condense my previous post.

Katatonia - AWESOME. NEED DISCOGRAPHY
Draconian - Interesting..... Need "halo something something"

They only have two albums (Time Bomb was never intened to be a DH album, Century Media released it under the DH moniker to get mroe money).

Start with their debut "Tortured Existence" as that's much more accessible if you're new to the whole deathrash thing, then once you're bruised from that go and dive headfirst into their second album "Epidemic of Violence". EoV is the heaviest album ever made so you might want a canister of oxygen - and make sure you turn it up really, really, REALLY fucking loud.

If you want to then try Time Bomb too - it's not bad, so long as you acknowledge the fact that it's not a 'real' DH album.

I'm extremely glad you said this, Demolition Hammer seem to be the kind of music I've been looking for for quite some time. I've only listened to a few tracks off "Tortured Existance" so far, and it's amazing stuff. Thanks Dave.
:kickass:

Damn, I was wrong :p

Be sure to check those bands out when you get chance lady!!!

I'm loving Gorod, listened to Process of a New Decline, the vocals are so immense! Dissection I had heard before but also a very good choice, Absu - "Stone of Destiny" is an absolute tune.

Will get listening to the rest soon, love you Podgieeeeeeee, you give the best recommendations! :) Haha

Also, Dan, listened to Electric Wizard they are pretty decent from a few of the tracks I found online, will have to get a hold of their albums and give them a proper listen.

Hmm, very good point. In that case, can anyone recommend some good progressive/sludge bands in the same vain as Mastodon, Baroness, High on Fire, etc?

Gojira? They count?

If not then.....The Sword is a great band. Their song "Freya" was featured on Guitar Hero 2
"Age of Winters" is an amazing album! :D
(I dunno about their second album, I don't have it, so I'm not gonna mention it lol)

Ok, my turn! Amon Amarth. Good starting point? I already "have" Twilight of the Thunder God", which is amazing! :kickass:

As I said, TE is the best starting point because it's got more groove to it, much more of a thrash influence. EoV is just relentless is every aspect and traded out the groove influence in favour of more balls-out aggression, which worked perfectly. Both have their individual merits and they're the heaviest albums money can buy.

Time Bomb was, as I mentioned, not supposed to be a Demolition Hammer album. After Vinny Daze (R.I.P. you mad bastard) and James Reilly left the band in 1993 to form Deviate NY (they did a demo called 'Gallery of Death' in 1995), Derek and Steve got in Alex Marquez and wrote Time Bomb as a different band but Century Media refused to issue the album unless it was under the DH moniker, as they believed it would shift more copies. It's nothing like TE or EoV, it's a groove metal album through and through with only about four guitar solos on the whole record. It's still a brilliant album, but the fact that it has Demolition Hammer slapped on it kind of ruins it a little - there's nothing wrong with it really, so long as you bear in mind that it's a completely different band.

If you want a more in-depth analysis of Totured Existence and Epidemic of Violence, I've written reviews for them at www.brutalism.com so just look the up on there mate. Though to be fair, Demolition hammer were - and still are - so good that you shouldn't need convincing. Also, look up my review for James and Vinny's Deviate NY demo 'Gallery of Death' on Brutalism as well if you're thinking of checking that out.

EDIT: In fact, I'll save you the effort;

Demolition Hammer - Epidemic of Violence Review: http://brutalism.com/content/demolition-hammer-epidemic-of-violence

I'll have a review for Time Bomb up soon, probably sometime in Febuary. Let me know if there's anything else you need.

I've listened to a few Gojira songs and wasn't very impressed. I felt that the songs were lacking, and were quite boring.

Yeah, The Sword is more to my tastes. Listening to Iron Swan now actually. :headbang: Heard 'em before, thanks for the effort though!! :D Age of Winters is indeed a good album, and what I've heard from Gods of the Earth was pretty good too.

Katatonia - AWESOME. NEED DISCOGRAPHY

Mate, I salute you

I would receommend the following "Tonight's Decision" & "Viva Emptiness", if you can get those albums before buying "Night Is the New Day" you won't go fuckin wrong

I let you in a wee durty secret

Get Nightwish as well

This band is amazing as well, get your hands on these albums

Wishmaster, Once, and this album was made after Tarja left and it's fuckin brilliant, Dark Passion Play

If you hate these albums, I will kill myself as it shows I know nothing about great music

The Sword is a great band.

The Sword are fantastic! Ive liked these guys for a while. Sorta doomy/stoner sound and its great. They're good live too. Id suggest buying Gods of The Earth as soon as because it is so much better than the first album. The song that stands out for me is To Take The Black.

I think if you're into that side of stoner music, try these bands out (because The Sword are good but they arent so great when put next to the other greats in that genre):

Sleep

Slo Burn

Electric Wizard

Fu Manchu

Kyuss

GOOOOOOO!!!

Is it strange that I STILL find Electric Wizard boring?
I've checked them out on multiple occasions and always think that they're one of those bands where you think "Man, I really want to like this band....but can't". :erk:
