I never got into black metal besides the early Venom stuff, and I don't know shit about the later stuff at all. A friend played me some of Mayhem's latest album not long ago and I was well impressed, although I've heard it's been canned by BM aficionados. Can someone recommend me 1 or 2 essential albums of the later stuff to get me started? Euro or non, as long as it's awesome.

Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Burzum - Burzum/Aske

These should appeal to fans of more traditional first wave Black Metal than a Hivs Lyset Tar Oss or Vikingligr Veldi.

Gotta love black metal.

Immortal-Dammned in Black
Emperor-Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk
Bloodthorn-Under The Shadow Of Your Black Wings

check these babies out

I'm really loving Behemoth's earlier material, back when they were playing black metal. Please reccomend similar bands to this non-Norwegian, black metal style.

Vidsyn & Algaion, they don't have that dirty raw sound like on chaotica (the Mayhem cover for example), but I find them both extremely good.

of course if you want dirty black metal...Stiny Plamenu

Honestly, if you want to get into more of Mayhems catalogue, I find that other bands play De Mysteriis material far better than Mayhem ever has....look for cover songs.

The essentials:
Darkthrone-Transilvanian Hunger
Mayhem-De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Bathory-Blood Fire Death
Emperor-In The Nightside Eclipse
Immortal-Pure Holocaust
Satyricon-Dark Medieval Times
Burzum-Burzum/Aske

I wouldn't include Satyricon. Add these:

Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky
Enslaved - Vikinglgr Veldi
Graveland - Carpathian Wolves
Graveland - Thousand Swords
Ildjarn - Det Frysende Nordariket (as long as you're properly adjusted to extreme minimalism and raw production)
Master's Hammer - Ritual
Necromantia - Crossing the Fiery Path
Rotting Christ - Thy Mighty Contract
Varathron - His Majesty at the Swamp

Some (most) of my favourite black metal albums:
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Bathory - Blood Fire Death
Aeternus - Beyond the Wandering Moon
Nachtfalke - Doomed to Die (SO UNDERRATED!)
Moonblood - Blut Und Krieg
Tormentor - Anno Domini
Drudkh - Autumn Aurora
Summoning - Dol Guldur
Beherit - Drawing Down the Moon
Immortal - Pure Holocaust
Sacramentum - Far Away from the Sun
Sarcofago - INRI
Astriaal - Renescent Misanthropy
Dissection - The Somberlain
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse

You may find that list more helpful. I don't listen to a lot of black metal, so it's possibly easier to start with my rec's as they are likely to be more listenable.
