Satyricon show a lot more oldschool influence and diversity, and are a more dimensional than Darkthrone. Satyricon is just generally more well rounded.

Satyricon over Darkthrone? Crazy...

As previously mentioned, Nachtmystium - Instinct: Decay is very good. Cool guys too. I've heard the material for the split with Leviathan, and it sounds promising. Think of the better moments on Twilight, especially the last song. People underestimate how much of that album Azentrius wrote.

and flamed you will get. I just never got the hype surrounding Satyricon.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that Satyricon is better than Darkthrone but Dark Medieval Times is one of my all time favorite black metal albums. They got steadily worse after that unfortunately.
