Stronger phantom center, wider stereo image (highs are more directional). It might be only subtly different. I found this just now recommending against horizontal placement. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/mar10/articles/qanda0310_6.htm But I feel like my monitors (HS50M) sound much better horizontal. I can lean forward or back without losing high frequencies.
