Steven Slate 2.5

hey guys, thanks for checking these out! these were demos recorded LIVE off of our AES Vdrums kit. Our midi programmer Dan was bashing away and the velocity sensitivity was set in "instant gratification mode" with lots of loud loud hits... so I took them down so that we can offer some more demos with better played, more dynamic, more responsive feel.

We have taken EXTREME efforts to ensure that if you want these kits to sound dynamic and natural, it can be done. On the other hand, if you want them in your face and ultra consistent (which is more what the demos were), it can also be done.

I'll have a TON of new demos soon, that will really show the realism and dynamics, and of course that NRG room!!!

hey drew, send me the midi files of Best Attempt and I'll toss one of our BFD Presets on it. I'm thinking something a bit more metal and slappy. Sounds good though. We'll have new demos up soon which will be way more tweaked and show off what the software can do. But I'd love to have those midi files Drew, it would make for a good comparison.

here are some very realistic sounding TONEDEF demos played on Vdrums pre AES... the AES kits were setup very differently so that mostly loud hits would play since its very loud on the AES floor.. but check out the detail on these fresh 2.5 babies, which are still two generations behind what we have now, which has even further velocity and hit smoothing:

never found a use for the deftones sets yet...

but i do have a question about 2.5

i use 2.0 (and the backdraft of 1.0) religously. are there new actual SAMPLES in 2.5? i have about 3 - 4 favorite kicks and snares, and the rest i havent found a use for. i am hoping for some more slammin kicks and snares in the 2.5!!!

aka new devil driver ish
or colin richardson's mix on oceans between us (love the drum sounds on that sooooooo much)

which devil's driver? rumor has it that IS one of my kicks on their last album.. colin richardson also uses my samples

New in 2.5 are two kicks and three snares. They are all rockin, but not exactly metal (one is the Steely Dan kick/snare). There are some great new Paiste cymbals and a killer metal hi hat pair.

For metal there is a lot to choose from the current collection. Here is a list of commonly used metal stuff.

Kicks:
1A (subtract sublows)
5
10
15
Chili Kick (subtract sublows, bump 8k)
PantyKick
DreamKick
Black Kick (Metallica)

Don't be afraid to mix two or even three of the above to create hybrids

Snares its anyone's guess, they can all work.. For metal my favs are
Snare5
Chili Snare (nice ringy crack)
Snare21A
PantySnare
GreenSnare
Snare2
and for fat deep sounds
NeverSnare
Snare12A
Snare11

Toms you can't go wrong with metal toms

In all, 2.5 will have 38 snares, about 29 kicks, 8 tom sets, two rooms, and a huge cymbal pack. Not bad..

Sorry, no can do. They're files that come with the Platinum Samples' pack, and I'd be in violation of copyright laws if I handed out their grooves.

the latest devil driver. it sounds very slate to me, but i a/b'd for an hour and couldnt find it. must be a hybrid (looking for the snare mainly).

stoked on the extra snares. im a snare freak.

on another note, i wonder if you've been asked this before. you used to make samples for mixing guys before you came out with your package, right? how do you go about that sort of thing, do you do it for anyone and the right price??

any plans to sample dream theater portnoy kit from "awake"

i know that the dream samples you had in 2.0 were based on systematic chaos which i hated the album all around anyway. a lot of people would agree "awake" is their best sounding album and i feel it's their best overall so perhaps for future releases you could look into the awake kit??? pitty please???

we've messed with the downloading thing every now and then. Especially now with the additional samples and new cymbal pack, the collection is just too large for easy downloading. It takes hours even on a cable connection.. and if it times out or stops suddenly, you have to start over and its quite frustrating.

As for Dream Theater... I love the natural punchy drum sound of Systematic Chaos. Awake, on the other hand, has one of the cheesiest drum sounds every mixed, imo. The reverb is very digital, its VERY VERY sampled sounding, and the kick sounds little and tiny (sounds like my Metallica Black kick awith a 150Hz hi pass on it). 6:00 is a good example. Just my opinion, and this is just the drums I'm talking about, NOT the music or playing etc.

When 2.5 comes out we'll have a lot of metal demos to post. Between the samples I listed above, all your metal needs will be met. And check out some new stuff by Andy, Colin Richardson, Zeus, and Jay Baumgardner... all amazing metal mixers who are using the stuff now..

Steven I couldn't agree more about your opinions about Awake. Although, it is an amazing album.

aramism, someone posted a very nice sounding tune over on the Slate forums incorporating the Dream Kit, don't write it off before giving it a chance. It sounds great!

Steven also has a section on his site where he helps users model their drum sounds after their favorite drum sounds by mixing his drums together creating hybrid kits. Steven can usually nail the sound you're after with ease. He really knows his drum sounds cold. I'm sure he could help you attain a very similar kit sound on Awake if that's what you're after, only expect it to sound better than on Awake. This is Steven Slate we're talking about! ;)

Mr. Slate I love your stuff but I'm strapped for cash and can't justify buying at the moment. But... at some point I surely will need to!

Now the real reason I made this post. Give me an Opeth Watershed kick/snare and I'm sold right now

One of my teachers mentioned you the other day. He composes music for audiobooks and apparently he's in love with your black album set!
