I am currently reading a book called "Infidel", an autobiography of sorts on Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a woman from the Middle East who was once a Muslim. She was fortunate enough to escape from Somalia and went to Holland to raise awareness on the treatment of women in Islamic societies.
In Holland she met the controversial film maker Theo Van Gogh and the two collaberated on Submission--- A short film about the current conditions of Muslim women, drawing from women's actual stories. Hirsi Ali had with her bodyguards already because of the nature of her cause, and because she was also with the goverment. Van Gogh refused to use bodyguards, he'd dealt with death threats before from films he'd made in the past, and harm never came out of them.
Needless to say, at the completion of the first part of their documentar, Van Gogh was brutally murdered by an Islamic terrorist. While riding his bike he was stabbed repeatedly, and left with a 5 page death sentence written for Hirsi Ali plunged into his chest. He was killed in order to stop her. He was killed because he was a man on a woman's side. He was killed because he was going against the word of "Allah".
Hirsi Ali was escorted out of Holland. She now lives in America with bodyguards around her constantly. She has not stopped her mission, she's not going to.
While in Holland she researched just how many Muslim people lived there, and how many Muslim women there were killed each year by their families for "disobeying Allah" or for simply being raped--------6,000. I'm sure the number for American Muslim women is around there as well.
Who would have thought. And why don't we hear more about it?
There is a lot more to her story, but for the rest you'll have to read her book.
But please watch the Submission short film, it's only 10 minutes long and it really won't take that much of your time... Even if you can't do anything for these women, at least simply knowing what is done to them on a daily basis and loathing it and wishing you could do something is something.
Submission. Part 1.
