I am currently reading a book called "Infidel", an autobiography of sorts on Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a woman from the Middle East who was once a Muslim. She was fortunate enough to escape from Somalia and went to Holland to raise awareness on the treatment of women in Islamic societies.

In Holland she met the controversial film maker Theo Van Gogh and the two collaberated on Submission--- A short film about the current conditions of Muslim women, drawing from women's actual stories. Hirsi Ali had with her bodyguards already because of the nature of her cause, and because she was also with the goverment. Van Gogh refused to use bodyguards, he'd dealt with death threats before from films he'd made in the past, and harm never came out of them.

Needless to say, at the completion of the first part of their documentar, Van Gogh was brutally murdered by an Islamic terrorist. While riding his bike he was stabbed repeatedly, and left with a 5 page death sentence written for Hirsi Ali plunged into his chest. He was killed in order to stop her. He was killed because he was a man on a woman's side. He was killed because he was going against the word of "Allah".

Hirsi Ali was escorted out of Holland. She now lives in America with bodyguards around her constantly. She has not stopped her mission, she's not going to.

While in Holland she researched just how many Muslim people lived there, and how many Muslim women there were killed each year by their families for "disobeying Allah" or for simply being raped--------6,000. I'm sure the number for American Muslim women is around there as well.

Who would have thought. And why don't we hear more about it?

There is a lot more to her story, but for the rest you'll have to read her book.
But please watch the Submission short film, it's only 10 minutes long and it really won't take that much of your time... Even if you can't do anything for these women, at least simply knowing what is done to them on a daily basis and loathing it and wishing you could do something is something.

Submission. Part 1.

I hope the moderators will be kind enough to delete any posts in this thread that are offensive, berating or simply unconstructive. I'd like this thread to have some integrity.

Some of the practices in the Middle East and Africa are barbaric beyond description. Thanks for helping to raise awareness here, Susperia.

It's not meant to be "news", it's meant to inspire young men (and a few women =P) to try and help.

Now stay out of my thread if you're going to do nothing but bitch.

They have Islamist morals. They are not similar to yours. That doesn't justify it but the whole world doesn't live by American laws, or morals for that matter. Susperia, your country's laws allow people to shoot people who walk on their lawns, work out your own issues before others'. And that is not directed towards the big bad wolf Bush, it's direced towards you as a citizen. I'm not saying my country is perfect but it's a helluva lot more civilized than yours.

I'll be the first person to admit that I know next to nothing about Islam. the video was interesting, and perhaps if I see the whole thing (and not just part one) or read the book (or perhaps cara might know) I'll have my question answered: Gaining awareness about the violence perpetuated in Islam by some of its followers is all good and nice, but what are the solutions being propositioned? have there been any solutions put forth? obviously, some sort of paradigm shift needs to occur but how are we to do this? do we force it on them?

I think it's really too bad that American muslims are so quiet about this sort of thing. I've never heard any speak out against oppression in their society. They also never seem to have anything bad to say about the suicide bombers or terrorists either.

Your country is what?

If what they do is barbaric, stupid and inhumane, that is why we should help. Just because they are doing based on religion does not get them a free pass.
