imo (i wish this to be noticed) the ayreon stuff is rather uninspired and the lyrics of THE were horribly cheesy. most repeat over and over again without coming to a climax or anything. not my cup of tea!
i agree. THE is just... so cheesy. musically is a masterpiece. but lyrically... it could be rhapsody. i prefer some of the older stuff. especially the spinoff Ambeon

more ambient
Arjen got some young girl to sing on some of the tracks, its quite cool and definitely not a concept album.

Evergrey is somewhat progressive.

Threshold is an awesome prog outfit, always ranked up there with the top acts. Hypothetical is awesome.

Pain of Salvation, of course and you can start with The Perfect Element. Don't get Be. It's not something you would want to break yourself into prog with. I personally find it to be an extraordinarily distant album, requiring the listener research and all this other crap. It is very distant from real music and has only about 35/78 minutes of music on it. Others find it to be great, but if you're yearning to listen to music, or need something to turn up, this is not the album. Was a waste of money for me.

I recently got into Zero Hour (they have a board here) and they are awesome. They are more on the prog side, but bring up the heaviness, though. I've seen in prog metal that most bands exercise some type of dynamic balance or ratio. This means that if a band goes more into the prg direction, they usually tune down the metal and if they turn up the metal, they tune down the prog. You can get their stuff from Amazon. I got my stuff from Looney Toons.

Ayreon, of course. Good stuff.

Here's the link for Looney Toons:

Their online service can get you most anything and their prices are great.

Thanks guys. This is all stuff I'll check out. How about some more of the prog/psychedelic 70s stuff and stuff more like Camel, Yes, and King Crimson? I have some stuff from those bands and Pink Floyd too. It doesn't necessarily have to be found right in a CD store or anything. Just something I can find online even and not pay insane prices for.

Brilliant music and lyrical writing IMO.

Well, that was funny.

I give you an example of brillant lyrical and musical writing: Pain of Salvation's BE.

I don't give a flying crap if someone dislikes it. It's the most diverse album you can find in the prog genre and the lyrically most complex album of all time. Even if you don't like it, it's essential.

If you aren't willing to spend time with it, you won't be rewarded. That album definitely grows on you . Actually, that would be my first album suggestion in the prog genre.
Second would be the pefect element and third would be Remedy Lane.

But if you really don't give a sh** about concepts and lyrics and hard to get into stuff, I recommend Blackfield. It's like intellectual prog pop (now that's vague).

i'm gonna have to butt in and say:

FRANK ZAPPA!

he's not usually categorized as prog, but damn if he doesn't have a progressive way of thinking about music. i highly recommend the album "over-nite sensation" for starters (actually i'm just getting into zappa myself, and already loving it).

Yea man, and get Sheik Yerbouti, One Size Fits All and definetly Hot Rats, o yea and also Sleep Dirt, basically Zappa is the fuckin man.

As I said, I love the music...very nice mix of prog rock and metal with that medieval style I like so much. Some may not find the lyrics to be all that great...but to me the way the characters interact is what makes the lyrics work so well. To each his own though.

I've given limited time to some mixed PoS and have wanted to start aquiring more from them. Heard a lot about "Be", but will start with their older stuff first.

Well, I disagree.

I would agree that Arjen knows how to get the best out of the vocalists though.

Yeah, start with the perfect element..

Ahahahah cheesy Ayreon lyrics? Uhhh, you do know that Ayreon is intentionally over-the-top, right? Dont take it too seriously, just enjoy it as pure escapism. If you still dont like it, hey, that fine - but dont bother picking holes in the lyrics when they are in the style exactly as intended.
