SuMMER BEER THREAD

Belgian whites are great summer beers.

sadly, the missus and I are attempted to lower our beer intake. no beer for 3 dayzzzzzzzzz....
plenty of wine tho

I actually went out a bought a slew of honest-to-goodness summer beers yesterday

first up, we have New Belgium's Sunshine wheat beer
new-belgium-sunshine-wheat.jpg

probably one of the nicer wheats I've had, as I'm usually not a fan of the style. you can really taste the coriander they used, too. and that's a good thing.

next, the Blue Paddle pilsner
new-belgium-blue-paddle.jpg

pretty tasty for a pilsner, but nothing I'd probably buy again. not really my style.

also purchased some Tecate. can't go wrong with that on a summer day.

you get guinness in the states!? cool! :) good for you guys!

You cant get it everywhere... and I hear that it is much better in your neck of the woods... I love the stuff though... so wonderful.

Today was a big trip to the good liquor store. I got some nice purchases (none of which i tried yet, because they're not cold- more to come later):

Porch Swing (from New Belgium)- a single ale for summer
loft.jpg

Loft (New Belgium) - Loft Beer is a refreshing ale brewed with both barley and wheat malt, a blend of Liberty and Sterling hops, and then spiced with the exotic kaffir lime leaf.

O'Fallon Summer Brew - local small microbrewery's new summer beer

also got some: Fuller's 2001 Vintage Ale, Delerium Tremens, Framboise Lambic, and a couple single bottles of other stuff to try.

I can't fing Porch Swing out here dammit! Loft is really good tho - I'm that into hoppy beers, but that's an exception.

and like I've said before, the Fullers Vintage is amazing

i tried the porch swing and loft last night- damn good! the loft is kind of similar to fat tire in aftertaste, but a little different flavor- i likethe spices they add. the porch swing is basically a single fermentation belgian ale, so it's like a more relaxed, less heavy belgian ale. it's similar to their abbey (a dubbel belgian), but easier to drink for summer.

yeah, i picked up the fuller's on your recommendation. they put some hella nice packaging on that! and it wasn't too ridiculous- $6.

oh, also tried Point's White Beer- it's a wheat beer with coriander and orange. not nearly as good as the Zon one i mentioned here earlier. just sort of tasted wheat-y, but no really good flavor. thankfully i only got one bottle of that.

ah yeah, that Point's White sounds exactly like the New Belgium Sunshine beer then. I enjoyed it, but yeah - I can def see how the style could be botched. The Porch Swing sounds good, I just need to find it. The local Costco has Fat Tire tho - can't beat that. New Belgium has impressed me with every brew.

Point is a sort of mass-micro brewery in wisconsin- kind of remind me of something like Iron City from pittburgh. i was surprised to seethem try a white beer- and it tasted pretty much like i expected: like a mass-micro trying to do a white beer. not much on flavor. their usual beer is kind of like an alternate to rolling rock.

i've definitely gotten into all of new belgium's beer too. i've liked every single one i've tried so far. haven't had the sunshine, but i think almost every other main one, as well as the last several special brews. the biere de mars was pretty good too, and similar to their styles in general. i haven't been able to try their cherry one- that's the only one i've really wanted that i can't find. they're possibly one of my fave breweries.

corsen_pater.jpg

holy shit, is this beer good. Corsendonk is a belgian nut brown-style brew and it is totally delicious. We actually bought proper belgian ale glasses like in the picture today so I was able to enjoy it that much more.

Also, the local BevMo restocked the rest of their Belgians so I was able to enjoy an Affligem blonde tonight as well. It's been awhile. Affligen has a new label/logo for all their brews it seems.

and typing while tipsy is amazingly difficult tonight.

delirium_brune.jpg

Delirium Nocturum
mediocre belgian ale, kinda of a black-ale style. not bad, but nothing special. cool bottle though.

we had people over on saturday to taste potential wines for the wedding. our budget is tight, so the sampling was pretty much reserved to around $5/bottle.

and the winner...

Forest Glen Syrah
out of the 6 bottles we tasted, this was far the best value.

i tried the Delerium Tremens, not the nocturne. It's a decent belgian ale. also in the cool bottle. still haven't tried the fuller's.

we're also in the process of looking for a wedding caterer (although ours is like a year+ away), and i'm dead set on getting someone who'll let us bring all the liquor for the bar ourselves. that should save us a TON of money. finding one to let us do that may be tough though.

but a party to decide on what to have is a really cool idea. can i steal that? it's an excuse to have a party, anyway.

yeah, it worked out quite well. we also sampled foods from various places we're thinking of getting catering from.

remember, you might not need full service catering and depending on the venue, can handle that stuff yourself without interference. the only issue would be if you need someone to tend bar and don't have a friend to handle it. we're just having everything self-serve buffet-style so it's easy. no hired hands, just pre-purchased platters of food + some pot luck items and a couple cases of wine/beer/soda/juice. booze is expensive and requires too much other crap to worry about. not to mention the drunkedness it could cause.

ok, i'm going to have to give this thread

award.jpg

for remaining shockingly on-topic for its considerable length. now, this may be because i myself don't appreciate beer and therefore tend not to read this thread and post it up with rantings about Indian chicks and the like. but nevertheless, AWARD.

(and, mysteriously, Yasser Arafat has also stayed away from this thread. go figure).
