SuMMER BEER THREAD

I had the green apple one with the woman on the bottle. Haven't seen any others - they might not make it out here.

I'll look into whiskey beer, but having not had one before am quite reluctant to try to make it.

Try to find Unibroue's Raftman, Lightly toasted wisky malt brew, 5.5%. I also tasted a french one that I can't recall the name.

The same woman is always on top, just the fruit changes. As the name implies the Ephemere are very short run brews so they change quite often in these parts. So you might to look out for the others from time to time. They released a peach, blueberry, cranberry and blackcurrant ones. They sold a six pack with all the flavours for a while around here. The apple one you tried has been unavailable for at least a year here.

you can actually get that in st louis! it's close to the STAG BEER.

also, i've been drinking a nice limited edition American Pale Ale Schlafly brewery put out in celebration of the 1904 World Fair (there's a big celebration all summer here, with a fair and ferris wheel and movies shown on a giant screen stuck out in the middle of the Mississippi River). nice malt flavor, light color and hops- not a brainy one, but really good, more malt/flavor than most IPAs. also, having some home brew from a basic pale ale batch i did with Columbus and Chinook hops.

up next for brewing is a belgian ale, a trippel i believe. went with a kit for my first belgian. ever use the Wyeast pitchable tube, avi? i read someplace you should still do a starter with it, but it says to just throw it in as is. i'm more apt to take the easy way out and follow the directions.

I ended up making root beer AND a nut-brown ale on saturday. anyone know if you need to permanently refrigerate the soda to keep the yeast from exploding the bottles?

also discovered that the russian river brewery makes a killer line of belgian-style ales. we'll probably take a trip to the brewery next weekend since we can only find one of their beers on tap locally.

i made a belgian trappist ale yesterday! didn't make a yeast starter, which i probably should've since the pitchable tube was from January. but i added a little extra dry active yeast. hope that doesn't screw things up. we'll see in about 4 weeks. wonder if it'll be ready to take with us to FLORDUH and enjoy on da beach.

ooh jealous! my next beer to brew will be a saison - I'm gonna try and get it started this week, but who knows what'll actually happen. bottled a new batch of hazelnut brown yesterday though. I tried to make this one a bit hoppier and used less extract flavoring so it'd be a bit more complex and not just nutty.

new beers:
Anderson Valley now has a belgian double and triple, both high alcohol (9 + 10%). unfortunately you can also really taste the booziness which I don't like. nice wax seals, but I won't buy it again.

also drove up to russian river brewery and man, are their beers excellent! a full selection of various belgians and an amazing british style ESB. we actually took home 2 half-gallon growlers of beer.

bottled the belgian ale yesterday. upon tasting the leftover at the bottom of the bottling bucket, it was REALLY sweet. i freaked, because it was already all bottled and i used mostly bottle caps (not swing-cap grolsch bottles). but i tasted a bit from one of the swing capped bottles and it was not sugary at all, so maybe all is good?
hopefully no exploded bottles will be found upon return from FLORDUH.

I transferred my belgian to the secondary this weekend and took a taste as well. it was also super-sweet, but I figure another month of fermentation should take care of it.

been drinking lots of new belgium's sunshine ale. tasty stuff.
