SuMMER BEER THREAD

pretty much all of the Rogue beers are awesome. too bad you can't get some of the best ones outside of Oregon/upper nor-cal (that I've seen anyway). One bonus thing about Rogue: they list all the ingredients and brewing info on the side so you could totally recreate the stuff at home. Very cool.

we have a fine wine store in Bexley OH that has a few coolers of micro and euro beers, they usually have some Rogue stuff. yummy.

out of NC has some massively superb German style seasonal beers. I'm a big hefeweizen fan, and their oktoberfest beer stacks up to almost anything out of Munich. almost heresy to say so but tis true.

I am excited to report that my most recent homebrew batch was a SUCCESS! after 3 bad batches, I'm finally back on top and my confidence is restored. I made a slightly modified Boddingtons Bitter - a little bit maltier and a little bit darker. It's not amazing, but definitely decent.

and also - I just read in the paper today that Rogue is opening a brewery in SF! stoked!

(only one month or so until it's time to resurrect the winter beer thread)

We have beer in 2 liter plastic bottles here.

Awesomeness because:
1. Convenient for carrying around in large amounts and walking around and drinking.
2. Skinheads can't kill you with plastic bottles.

It's all about Deer Beer here.

since the weather has been in the 80s the past couple days, I think it is now time to resurrect this thread.

this weekend I started brewing my first official summer beer: a blueberry wheat beer. I first decided on a fruit beer and, after doing some reading, settled on the flavors. I guess most fruit beers besides krieks and lambics are wheat-based, but not necessarily "wheat" beers per se. they have their own special category at competitions. anyhow, I'm using flavor extracts, but they say even frozen fruit works a-ok. hope it turns out.

yeah, I'm not too into fruit beer either, but I've had a couple really nice ones recently. some friends made an excellent peach beer that was quite refreshing.

summer is almost here, right? it sure feels like it after the 90 degree temps this week.

da brew update:
blueberry wheat beer = fucking excellent. I can't believe how good it turned out.
still have an amazing english ale in the garage in storage. again, i'm surprised by the high quality.

so what to make next? I'm waffling between root beer (got a kit), hazelnut brown (again, have extract on-hand), or a belgian saison (more risky). and ideas?

also: the beer of choice right now = north coast brewery's pranqster. amazing belgian-style ale from CA.

The belgian saison could be really good but the hazelnut brown inspires me more. A whisky malt ale could be nice, although it is not very summery. Ever drank a cognac ale? This thing kills, both because of the taste and its high alcohol level, not as alcoholic tasting as you might think. I like to drink a nice redhead in the summer.

I don't think I want to mess with a whiskey or a cognac ale. I'm not into high alcohol and I just don't think I'm at that level.

also - I did *finally* try the ephemere and it was great.
