The Spectre Within/Powerslave/Dance of December Souls
The Spectre Within is easily one of my favorite traditional metal albums. Although I feel slightly dirty adding it when an Iron Maiden album hasn't made its way into permanence, it was a large step in increasing the melodic nature of traditional metal to form power metal, and contains seven very distinct songs that I would imagine had influence on others as well. Epitaph is practically epic doom metal before Epicus Doomicus, for example, and the vocal melodies paved the way for Blind Guardian and others that wrote layered and relatively detailed melodies.
