the first some what extreme metal album you heard... and liked

The first metal album i ever heard and thought was extreme(at the time) was Master of Puppets way back in the day. I think after I heard that album, I listened to nothing but metallica, blues, and sabbath.

But the first time I liked newer extreme metal was when I heard Borknagar's Empiricism. Thats what got me into black metal, death metal, and other extreme genres.

I'm going to assume we're not counting thrash. If that were the case, then it would've been early Metallica, Slayer, and Sepultura.

Regardless, the first really extreme album I ever bought was Emperor's Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk. That album changed my fucking life. I remember it clear as day: it was july of 1998, and I was about to turn 13. I bought it at Camelot Music, a store in the local mall that I think became or was bought by or merged with FYE.

I listened to it non-stop, for days on end. It was the most immense, crushing, powerful thing I'd ever heard in my life, and it's probably still my favorite album ever. I suppose you could chalk that up to sentimentality or nostalgia or what have you, but that album is an absolute monster.

Dissection's The Somberlain

I have lost touch with black metal over the years, but Dissection is probably the best black metal band IMHO and something that I could easily get into again.

Well besides for the early Slayer, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, & Death stuff I believe it was Mayhem's De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas and Dark Funeral's The Secrets of the Black Arts. Don't really care for most black metal these days however.

I love the vocals on De Mysteriis. They lend the album an air of antiquity and exoticism that's lacking in most other black metal releases. I find them ghastly, chilling even; it's easily Attila's best performance. Granted, I've also seen them compared to a constipated Dave Mustaine, but to each his own, I suppose.

Not including the few Children of Bodom albums I had heard prior, Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse. I had somewhat of a similar reaction that HaggardBastard had to Anthems...

Well, Blackwater Park was my first semi-Death Metal album that I loved, but if I must name a shear, straight up, face ripping Death Metal band, then In Their Darkened Shrines by Nile was one of the first full-fledged Death Metal bands that I listened to and loved.

i used to bone blackwater park, then i got majorly into opeth and thought blackwater park was among their weakest shit, then i got majorly out of opeth and im back to thinking bwp is one of their best albums

first dm album i heard (slayer aside) is with fear i kiss the burning darkness, first bm was under a funeral moon i think. pretty fucking good starting points i must say.
