Alright, here is a taste of the Crusade for those that weren’t there and just a synopsis of my night:
I arrived right after the doors opened because a good friend of mine is in the opening band Enshrined. Unfortunately, I had to wait for close to 45 minutes to get in! Even despite my will call ticket. It was ridiculous. I started talking to people in the line. Like this dude with armor on and a really bad unibrow and speech impediment. Like, couldn’t get out a sentence to save his life because he was stumbling and barreling over his own words. Kind of sad. Anyway, I get in just as Enshrined are breaking down their stuff. I go to check out the merchandise and find the latest Nokturnal Mortum. I pick that bad boy up. and I notice a guy that I don’t recognize but fits the description of who I believe was JayKeeley from the Royal Carnage board. The only way that I KNEW it was him was because he had the same Agalloch OSWP shirt that I have without the tour dates that were supposed to embroider the back. I told him who I was and he was really ecstatic and he introduced me to everyone in the group. It was almost like a family reunion of sorts. Has this sort of thing happened before that I wasn’t aware of because you all seemed like you’ve known each other forever (like in real life)? Grab that Nokturnal Mortum and go to check out the next band.
Preface: some of the pictures turned out good and most turned out like shit. I’m still trying to master the art of live band photography. Any suggestions ‘gugs?
Autumn Eternal:
Decent band with some really neat sections, but the problem I had with them is they would mix up more deathy style parts with more black metal style parts. In itself, it’s not a bad thing but they did it so abruptly that the changes felt uncomfortable and not natural. Otherwise, pretty decent band.
Dumah:
I wasn’t a huge fan of this band. For one, a lot of their parts seem really cliché and they didn’t have a second guitar player which made them sound really empty and thin. I did, however, think the bass player was awesome. He did have a lot of energy and reminded me of a dwarf. Like his hair was huge and just all over the place when he head banged. Later on in the night I talked with him and he seemed cool, but then later on his (what appeared to be) his girlfriend started talking to me and he came up and looked really threatened and started getting all huffy. Shit, I didn’t even want her. He better check himself before he wrecks himself.
Thyphus:
Next came Typhus and I thought they were amazing. I mean, this was my first time experiencing the whole black metal thing live. Well, that’s not true as I saw Dimmu Borgir live like 3 years ago. Oh, wait, it is. Anyway, these guys were straight ahead black metal and sounded really good. The bass player had this strap thing on his head which was funny as well as the drummer looked like the Unabomber. They came at you fast without a whole lot of bullshit talk between songs. Song after song without any time to cleanse your wounds. They did this weeping thing which put me off a bit, but hell, they kicked so much ass, even with the flaws they owned.
Todesbonden:
Not my thing really. The music was alright, some neat folky parts here and there, but overall, I couldn’t get into it. The guitar was really hard to hear as well, but that seemed to be more of a technical issue than anything. The vocalist has a really good voice though and I’m torn between thinking she’s hot and odd looking. Really big eyes.
November’s Doom:
The relationship I have with this band is odd. I think they are a GOOD band. I really can’t get too into them however and I’m not sure why. I have
The Knowing[I/] and it just hasn’t really grabbed my attention. I may give it another spin soon though. I will say that these guys are pros. They know what they’re doing and were tight and sounded really sharp as everything came out clear as a bell in the mix. The vocalist is a presence as he is huge and his hair is down to his ass. They had some parts that rocked my ass so I’ll give them a few more chances.
The Chasm:
Wow. Okay, these guys are the shit. I mean, they absolutely whooped ass. They mixed thrash with death and had slight touches of black metal here and there for color (or lack there of). They were somewhat of the anomaly here, but the frontman was working the crowd like he owned each and every soul in the room. This came across well in the music. These guys were ON. This may be blasphemy, but I liked these guys the most out of all the acts there that night. I just got my ass whooped, that’s all. \m/
Thyrfing:
Loved the intro and they came in like they had just gone to battle. It was fun as hell watching them and their lead vocalist was taking lead like William fucking Wallace. They had a second vocalist that didn’t appear too comfortable on stage (I think they said it was his first show with them?).
