No, they're a very real band, just very esoteric and mysterious.
Their prescence in the music world was first divulged in a drunken thread by me concerning the idea of music as a collectors item. The band is very angry that I let the world know of their existence (they wanted to remain strictly underground, playing once or twice a year in a cave somewhere in the mountains of North Carolina). Of the 12 albums, they've released, none have ben sold or traded. In fact, they are all sitting on a coffee table in the guitarist's living room. They are true to their misanthropic ideals of fascist unitarianism.

we are fucked - this phrase and similar sentiments showed up in several people's signatures immediately after Bush's re-election.
release dates - disputes over whether certain albums were released in 2003 or 2004 come up very often (Blut Aus Nord and Drudkh being two notable examples), and are threatening to throw 2004's top album lists into disarray.
UM is running like... - frequently bumped thread in which people vent over UM's notoriously inadequate server.
Hammers Of Misfortune - they rival Negura Bunget as the most heavily promoted band on RC, Jay has been known to threadjack any and all music threads to discuss them (side note: this should have been added a long time ago)

Here's a long overdue update to the dictionary:
Search function - This was disabled due to the server constantly being a bitch, leading to even more constant botching and begging for Deron to restore it. You can still access old posts through the archive function.
unruly - a NADism for awesome moments in music and everything else.
sucks/rules - another term used by NAD/Adrian/One Inch Man, it's the two categories in which he divides music.
tournaments - the recent best band and album tournaments created lots of controversy, ranging from emembers encouraging people on other forums to vote against bands, voting for albums which one presumably has not heard, people threatening to leave the forum if ________ won (in jest of course, though it proved once and for all we'll never find a band we can all agree on), and voting on the degree of metalness. The most polarizing matchup was Iron Maiden vs. Ulver, which required a tiebreaker. The winners were Bathory (much to the dismay of Zod) and Burzum's Det Sum Engang Var.
Royal Pinkage - a joke originating in the tournaments after people accused Agalloch of not being metal and/or masculine enough, led by Lurch. A mock banner was created for this.
sea monster - an amusing drawing which recurs in Erik's altered pictures.
Borat - sexist, anti-Semitic Sascha Baron Cohen character considered by several forum members to be the height of humor.
cult/obscure 80s metal - there has been a growing interest in it on the forum, owed somewhat to Hammers of Misfortune & Slough Feg citing it as a major influence and a startup mailorder specializing in it.
Kill Tully - forum member who takes the thrash metal terror philosophy to extremes and has been (unjustly in the eyes of many) criticized for it.
footbalm, Hell Mike Motorbike - fotmbm/Sorath is usually referred to by one of these.
Profanity - Fatass with an enormous repository of meaningless posts, arguably the most despised member of UM. He has taken to posting here, but hasn't caused too much trouble.
mystery post? - this is sometimes appended to vague posts or when one's position is unclear. Coined by Erik and adopted by Jay.
lolcore - derogatory term for -core bands, reserved for the lowest of the low.
one star - Five stars are often awarded for amusing spam threads, the opposite is given to the most pointless and humorless ones, and is occasionally used as a sign of disapproval, which many people think is lame.
